Chapter 338 Unable to Calculate, Suffering Divine Retribution

'Ah, Forget it. I'll deal with it later,' James thought.

James watched Jennifer hop into Harmony's car before he started to head out.

Out of nowhere, James got this itch to get a divination done, just to see if he and Jennifer were really not meant to be.

He jumped right into it. James first picked up divination from some books. Later, the Smith family saw his knack for it and brought in a big-shot divination master to mentor him. At first, the master wasn't too keen, since top-tier diviners were a big deal and got reverence from powerful folks.

This diviner had taught members of several high-profile families before, but they all turned out to be lazy or just plain untalented. When Alistair asked him to teach James, he was iffy. But after meeting James, the master was blown away, totally flipping his initial thoughts.

James had this insane talent for divination and was super sharp. The master was so impressed that he saw James getting better every single day. Within a month, James had nailed all the techniques, leaving the master with nothing left to teach. Before he left, he gave James a serious warning, "James, I've taught you everything I know. You're the smartest and most talented person I've ever met. If I hadn't seen it myself, I wouldn't believe it. You'll figure out many life principles on your own, so I won't waste words. Just remember one thing!"

"We diviners can figure out anything about anyone, but we must never divine our own fate! It's a big no-no in our practice, and you gotta remember that!" he warned.

As James started his divination, his teacher's serious words echoed in his mind.

Even though he didn't get why he shouldn't divine his own fate, he always followed his teacher's advice and never did it for himself.

But now, he couldn't help it. He was dying to know what the future held for him and Jennifer.

Sweat started pouring down James's forehead, soaking his eyelashes and dripping down his back.

James was usually a ball of energy. Even when he fought a bunch of people in the Perry family, he barely broke a sweat. But now, he was drenched and breathing heavy.

His body temperature shot up, his skin turning red like he was on fire. If someone touched him now, they'd be shocked.

James gritted his teeth and kept going with the divination. His mind was racing, crunching the birth dates and life paths of both him and Jennifer.

But no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't see their future together. He could only see that Jennifer would have a happy marriage, but he couldn't tell if he was part of it.

Not ready to give up, he tried again, but finally, he couldn't take it anymore and coughed up blood, freaking out the passersby.

"What the hell?" James gasped, his face pale, eyes wide in disbelief behind his sunglasses.

"Could my teacher be right? Are diviners really not supposed to divine their own lives?" James muttered, feeling frustrated.

He was a genius, mastering everything from medicine to martial arts to divination. Divining others' lives was a piece of cake for him. But when it came to himself, he spent nearly half an hour with no results and physical exhaustion. He felt like if he kept going, he'd drop dead.

'But why is it like this? Is it because knowing the future would mess things up? If someone knew what was coming, they'd try to change it, screwing up the future,' James thought.

He got why his teacher had the rule of only doing two divinations a year, no matter how much money was on the table. Too much divination could spell trouble!

This also explained why many diviners often met tragic ends.

James could feel the discomfort after the divination. He sighed and stopped pushing it.

As he was about to leave, a figure appeared in front of him, staring at him uncertainly, "James?"

Hearing the voice, he looked up and saw a beautiful woman standing there, eyes wide with surprise. Seeing the scars on his face and the blood at the corner of his mouth, she looked pained.

She hurried towards him, staring intently, her hands trembling as she reached to touch his face.

"James, what happened to you?" Emberlyn asked, aghast.

Who else could it be but Emberlyn?
