Chapter 121: Resignation
James wasn't surprised. He had long anticipated that Eugene would do this, which was why he remained so calm. The more praises Eugene got now, the harder he'd fall later.
Checking the time, James figured Brandon should wake up in a few hours, so he wasn't in a hurry at all. He let Eugene bask in his moment of glory a little longer.
Jennifer didn't know that Brandon had regained consciousness, and she was very anxious. "He bribed those two assistants. If we're the only ones telling the truth, nobody’s gonna listen. It's infuriating!" Jennifer said.
Seeing James's indifferent attitude made Jennifer even angrier. She thought James was useless; they were being bullied to this extent, and he was still smiling.
"Dr. Baker is here!"
At this moment, someone shouted, and everyone looked towards the door. Sure enough, a few people walked in, including Eugene, Dominic, Herman, and three department heads.
"What's with all the noise?" Dominic scolded unhappily, his stern face making everyone uneasy and afraid to speak.
Observant people quickly noticed that Eugene's position was slightly ahead of Dominic's. Walking side by side with Herman, Eugene was clearly a step above Dominic. Dominic didn't dare show any dissatisfaction about it.
Eugene soon spotted Jennifer and James in the crowd. He slightly raised his head and said, "I think I just heard you discussing me?"
The female doctor, who had a grudge against Jennifer, immediately stepped forward to complain. "Dr. Baker, it's like this. Dr. Johnson said that Mr. Edwards wasn't cured by you but by her husband, James. We didn't believe it, so we started arguing."
Eugene feigned surprise. "What? Is that so? Dr. Johnson, I don't think I've ever offended you. Why would you slander me like this?"
His acting was so real that those not paying close attention wouldn't notice his exaggeration or the smugness hidden in his expression.
Seeing him like this made Jennifer even more furious. She wished she could slap Eugene; he was so disgusting!
Dominic was immediately enraged and scolded. "That was outrageous! Jennifer, what's wrong with you? How could you say such absurd things? Apologize to Dr. Baker right now."
The other three department heads also stepped forward to criticize Jennifer. For a moment, Jennifer became the target of everyone's anger, boiling with anger.
"You've all been deceived by Eugene. His treatment plan was completely unworkable! He nearly killed Mr. Edwards the first time around. It was James who arrived in time to save Mr. Edwards and cure him!" she said it coldly.
Unfortunately, her words sounded like mad ravings to everyone else, and no one believed her.
Under Eugene's signal, one of the two assistants stepped forward and said, "We assisted in Mr. Edwards's surgery and can vouch for Dr. Baker. He was the one who cured Mr. Edwards. On the contrary, Dr. Johnson kept interfering with Dr. Baker's work."
"Yeah, we didn't expect Dr. Johnson to be like this. Now that Mr. Edwards is cured, she wants to steal Dr. Baker's credit," another added.
Their words made everyone more furious, and some even started scolding Jennifer.
Eugene felt very pleased inside. 'Weren't you always so stubborn and dismissive of me?' he thought.
Seeing Jennifer's furious expression gave Eugene a perverse sense of satisfaction, and his smile grew wider.
Dominic, with a cold expression, said directly, "Dr. Johnson, I think you're too stressed. You don't need to come to work this month. Take a good rest at home."
Jennifer's face changed upon hearing this, and she snorted heavily, saying loudly, "Just this month? No, I resign!"
James was shocked. He knew very well how much effort Jennifer had put into getting into Lindwood City Hospital. She had worked so hard to be promoted to the position of deputy director, and resigning now would be a waste of her former efforts.
"Jennifer, don't be impulsive," James advised.
Jennifer took a deep breath, removed her badge from her neck, and threw it on the ground. "I've already decided. The current Lindwood City Hospital is very different from before. It's just a cash cow now, totally lost its way. There's nothing for me to miss here."
'That was indeed true.' James couldn't help but silently agree.
Jennifer's action surprised many people, but no one dared to try to ask her to stay.
Dominic's eyes showed a hint of regret, but he believed that Jennifer was insignificant compared to Eugene.
James sighed and left the cafeteria with Jennifer. As they passed Eugene, he paused slightly and said to Eugene in a meaningful tone, "People always want to live in dreams. You'll be living the dream for another four hours, and it's coming to an end."
For some reason, Eugene felt an inexplicable panic when he saw James's expression. He cursed James as a lunatic.
He quickly regained his composure.
'What was there to be afraid of? Those two assistants would never betray me. Brandon was cured by me!' he thought to himself.
Back in the office, Jennifer kept a stern face and quickly wrote her resignation letter, preparing to submit it to Dominic.
James couldn't help but say, "You don't have to be in such a hurry to submit your resignation. The truth will come out soon."
However, Jennifer didn't believe James at all. She thought James was just trying to comfort her, and it was a terrible excuse!
"I can't understand how you can stay so calm. Aren't you angry at all? Eugene's taking credit for your hard work," Jennifer said angrily, gritting her teeth.
James replied, "I told you, Eugene won't be smug for long. He's having a blast now, but he's gonna crash hard. Just wait and see."
Jennifer glared at James and ignored him, starting to pack her things.
Finally, she took one last look at the office, feeling a deep sense of reluctance. She had so many memories here!
Especially those thank-you letters from her former patients on the wall, which were the greatest reward for her efforts.
With a long sigh, Jennifer finally put away her feelings of reluctance and took her resignation letter to Dominic's office.
She didn't go in but handed the resignation letter to Dominic's secretary and left.
On Eugene's side, he was in an exceptionally good mood. This was his best moment in years.
Dominic had just promised to promote him to director.
Of course, he didn't care about that anymore. With Herman as his backer, his future would have more possibilities.
When that time came, the first person he wanted to get was Jennifer.
Four hours passed in a flash. He was resting in his office when a nurse called him. "Dr. Baker, Mr. Edwards has woken up!"
