Chapter 357 Quarrel
It was already late at night, and it was pretty chilly out there. As the night dragged on, the temperature dropped like crazy, and the water felt ice-cold. When it splashed on James, it snapped him out of his funk real quick.
With his head clearing up, he started to feel like something was seriously off about what just went down. With his normal personality, how the hell could he have done something so sleazy?
After all, he’d been married to Jennifer for five years, living every day with such a knockout. He had a million chances to mess with her underwear, but he never did. He didn’t even think about it. And even if he did, he’d never act on it. He had self-control until then.
This was way out of character for him.
'Why did this happen?' James fell into deep thought.
He kept replaying what had just happened, analyzing his thoughts at that moment. Soon, he realized that his willpower had been super weak just now, unable to control even a tiny bit of desire, which led to what happened, something completely out of character for him.
'It felt like a demon in my heart. Yeah, exactly, a demon in my heart.' These thought popped into his mind, freaking him out.
He’d heard that people who practiced cultivation, once they hit a certain level, were prone to developing heart demons. The more powerful the person, the stronger the heart demon.
But it didn’t make sense. At his current level, he shouldn’t be dealing with a heart demon. Besides, his will had always been rock solid, so how could a heart demon pop up?
A heart demon was a real pain in the ass, kinda like a disease in a person. The difference was that these diseases were physical and could be treated by doctors. But a heart demon was psychological, or rather, it went beyond psychology. It was a kind of illness that transcended the psychological. This description might not be spot on.
Psychological issues led to depression, but a heart demon wasn’t depression, nor was it a split personality.
James closed his eyes, standing under the showerhead, letting the freezing water wash over his whole body. Then he started searching for the heart demon.
He wanted to figure out what it was. No matter how many times he searched, he couldn’t find it. He frowned, frustrated by this feeling of losing control.
Shaking his head, he thought maybe he was overthinking it. At his level, he shouldn’t be dealing with a heart demon. The more likely reason was that he’d burned too much energy today, leading to a weakened state of mind and spirit, which was why he did what he did.
After his shower, he didn’t see Arianwen in the living room. She seemed to have gone to bed. He went straight to his room to crash.
He wondered how Jennifer was doing now.
'What's Jennifer doing now? Is she thinking about me? Did Jennifer really recognize me last time, or is she just guessing?' James thought.
He really didn't wanna be out here. He wanted to go back and be with Jennifer, but he felt totally stuck.
James had this gut feeling that the day the Smith family would take him back wasn’t too far off.
With Alistair’s personality, there was no way he wasn’t keeping tabs on him. Most of what he’d been up to lately was probably known to Alistair.
Maybe Alistair was just giving him one last test. Once he passed, Alistair would send someone to bring him back. James knew exactly what this test was.
Looking back now, he realized how brutal Alistair’s five-year test of integration and six-month test of separation had been. He sighed deeply, stopped thinking about it, and slowly drifted off to sleep.
That day, Jennifer’s family got back from delivering gifts. Jennifer looked totally out of it, her whole vibe was off, and she was wasting away. Seeing her like this made Dennis and Kaitlyn super worried.
Jennifer’s appetite was practically non-existent now. After nibbling on a bit of food, she said, “Dad, Mom, I’m full. I’m heading to the clinic.”
“Hold up,” Dennis shouted, “You’re barely eating two meals a day now, and hardly anything at that. At this rate, you’re gonna starve. Look at you, you’re so thin a gust of wind could blow you away. Sit down and finish this food before you go.” Dennis scolded.
But Jennifer didn’t even flinch. She didn’t turn around, just paused and said flatly, “I’m stuffed. I gotta go.”
Seeing her like this, Dennis snapped, “You can’t leave. You have to finish this food before you can go.”
But Jennifer didn’t stop. She kept walking to the door and started putting on her high heels.
Dennis slammed the tableware on the table, fuming. He was completely pissed. 'Jennifer hasn’t finished her food for days, and it isn't improving at all. If this keeps up, she’s definitely gonna get sick,' Dennis thought.
Seeing Dennis angry, Kaitlyn quickly patted his hand. “Why are you yelling at Jennifer? She’s just in a bad mood and have a terrible appetite.” Kaitlyn whispered.
Then Kaitlyn quickly walked over and grabbed Jennifer, saying, “Jennifer, don’t be mad. He’s just worried about you. Come on, listen to me, eat a little more. If you keep starving yourself, you’ll get sick. You haven’t had a full meal in days. Even if you don’t think about yourself, think about us.”
But hearing this, Jennifer suddenly stopped, stared at Kaitlyn, and showed a mocking expression. “Mom, you want me to think about you two, but have you ever thought about me?” Jennifer rounded on them.
“How can you say that? When haven’t we thought about you?” Kaitlyn said, confused and pretending to be upset.
“Really?” Jennifer mocked. “If you were thinking about me, why did you drive James away? Why did you force him to sign the divorce papers?” Jennifer continued.
Kaitlyn was momentarily speechless. Dennis, sitting at the dining table, immediately walked over, angrily saying, “We were thinking about you when we forced James to sign the divorce papers. You’re our only daughter. We won’t let you ruin your lifelong happiness with James.”
