Chapter 63 Relatives Visiting
Watching Harmony leave angrily, James couldn't figure out why she was so upset. Why was she furious even after he transferred money to her?
No wonder the Michael family was so afraid of Harmony. It turns out she's really difficult to deal with.
He hailed a cab on the roadside and headed home.
It had been a few days since he last went home, and he felt a faint sense of nervousness, fearing something.
Upon returning, he found Jennifer wasn't home; she had gone to work. He felt somewhat relieved but also strangely lost.
There were visitors at home from the grandfather's side, it was Tony and Leonard.
As James entered, Dennis was chatting with them, while Kaitlyn was busy cooking in the kitchen. Dennis immediately smiled and gestured for James to come over and sit.
When Tony and Kayla saw James, their expressions darkened, especially Leonard, who had an awkward hint on his face. He had lost his self-esteem in front of James last time!
After that incident, Leonard had thought for a long time and was sure that it was James who intentionally informed Mr. Rogers and others, causing him such an embarrassment. He had to put much more effort just to regain the favor of The Hill Family.
He harbored deep hatred towards James.
If James were someone with high status, it would be another matter, but James was just a trash, a son-in-law who lived off others, which made him feel like the turn of events were particularly unfair!
However, he didn't show this negative emotion on his face, quickly returning to a natural expression and even smiling and greeting James.
But his change in expression didn't escape James's eyes.
James walked over and greeted them.
They soon steered the conversation towards James. "James, Uncle said you haven't been home in the past few days. Are you out looking for a job?" Leonard deliberately asked.
Tony and Kayla also looked at James, not with friendly expressions but with smiles tinged with obvious sarcasm. They already disliked James, and after the incident at the last banquet, their feelings towards him had turned from dislike to hatred.
They, like Leonard, believed that it was James’s fault that led to Leonard's embarrassment. They thought James's subsequent actions in which he tried to fix Leonard's fault were insincere.
Now, they couldn't wait to humiliate James. In their eyes, James was a disgrace to the family, a son-in-law with no abilities, unable to even find a job, bringing shame to their relatives.
Dennis gave James a look, signaling him to lie and not give these people a chance to mock him.
"No," James replied succinctly.
Leonard lightly slapped himself and said, "Oh, I forgot. You have Uncle to support you, why would you need to find a job? Unlike me, who had been under a lot of pressure, needed to manage the whole company, and work overtime every day."
His hypocritical demeanor was nauseating, and Dennis's expression immediately soured.
"You've misunderstood James. He's not unemployed; he's helping out at Jennifer's hospital. Besides, he recently acquired a piece of jade worth millions. Why would he need a job? Haha," Dennis spoke up for James, then turned to Leonard, smiling slyly, "Leonard, I heard your company has been struggling lately, losing quite a bit. Is that true?"
Leonard's face stiffened at Dennis's words, hitting a nerve. Indeed, his company had been facing some issues, having borrowed a significant sum from the bank, with hefty monthly interest payments!
But being proud as Leonard was, he couldn't admit it. He waved it off, saying, "No, no, that's not true. My company is doing very well, making hundreds of thousands a month.
"By the way, if James can't find a job, he can come to my company. We happen to need a security guard... Oh, don't get me wrong, I just want you to start from the bottom to build your skills.
"With your abilities, James, you'll soon be promoted. As for the salary, I usually pay security guards $600, but for you, a family member, I'll offer $800. What do you think?"
He chuckled, exuding superiority, looking down at James with a sense of superiority.
Tony also chimed in, "Yes, Leonard's company is thriving and will soon expand. When you go out and tell your friends where you work, it'll raise your social status, much better than following Jennifer around, right, brother-in-law?"
Dennis's face darkened, but he held back his anger, nodding stiffly.
James sighed. How could his kind and simple mother-in-law have such materialistic and mean siblings?
Dennis might have a bad temper, but he was generally nice. However, Tony's family had truly negative characters, always trying to bring down those better than them. They envied and cursed behind others' backs, which was despicable.
If not for their family ties, James wouldn't even bother with them.
"Thanks, but I'm doing well at Jennifer's place," James declined.
Dennis shot James a look, a hint of disappointment. He wanted James to fight back, even if it meant boasting.
"Sorry for the absence. I'll go take a shower," James said.
He hadn't changed his clothes for a few days and felt uncomfortable. He went to freshen up and change into clean clothes. Leonard saw this as a sign of shame and felt even more pleased.
When James came out in clean clothes, Kaitlyn had finished cooking, and they all sat down at the table to eat.
James hadn't eaten much at the French restaurant earlier, so he was a bit hungry now. He sat down to eat with the others.
"Wow, Mom, your cooking is still the best," James said contentedly.
Kaitlyn looked at him kindly, smiling, and encouraged, "Then just eat as much as you like."
"Okay," James happily agreed.
"Hey, I said eat more, not eat so fast," Kaitlyn teased.
"I'm afraid I won't have the chance to eat much in the future," James blurted out casually.
Kaitlyn immediately furrowed her brows, pretending to be displeased, and chided, "What nonsense are you talking about, child? As long as you want to eat, how could Mom not cook for you?"
James paused, showing a dry smile. He knew that he and Jennifer had already signed a divorce agreement, and the divorce would be imminent. But it seemed as if his in-laws were still unaware of this.
After chatting at the table for a while, Leonard once again steered the conversation towards James.
"Uncle, Aunt, if I remember correctly, it's been five years since James and Jennifer got married, right? Why haven't they had children yet?"
