Chapter 12 She's Lying
Talking about James and Jennifer, they have been married for five years. The number of times they go out together is scarce, let alone buying clothes for James.
At a high-end men's clothing store, Jennifer picked out a suit and threw it in front of James, saying, "Try it on and see if it fits."
James picked up the price tag and saw that the whole set cost over five thousand dollars. It startled him a bit, and he said, somewhat flattered, "You don't need to buy something so expensive; a thousand or so will do."
"Just try it on if I ask you to. Why is there so much nonsense?" Jennifer impatiently said.
James understood Jennifer's character and didn't say much more. He took the clothes to the fitting room.
In no time, he came out wearing it, immediately causing quite a stir in the store. Jennifer was also stunned.
Wearing the suit, James underwent a huge transformation in demeanor, exuding a sense of grandeur and considerable male charm.
He had a good physique, standing tall at 6 feet, looking slim in clothes, and having a masculine appearance, which was not evident before when he wore outdated garments. Now, it was apparent, almost like a model.
"How does it look? Is it okay?" James asked somewhat nervously.
As soon as he spoke, his demeanor immediately changed, and Jennifer also came back to her senses. A strange sense of loss crept in.
She shook her head, chuckling to herself, "Jennifer, oh Jennifer, haven't you figured out who James really is yet? Were you truly smitten by him? This guy, no matter how well he dresses, can't hide the fact that he's a good-for-nothing."
"A perfectly good suit wasted on you. Even if you were dressed in a robe, you wouldn't pass for a prince." Jennifer's words were as cutting as ever, "Fine, this suit it is."
An enchanting melody filled the air as Jennifer's phone rang. James glanced in its direction out of reflex, catching sight of the caller ID on the screen, it displayed, 'Him.'
As Jennifer picked up the call, a fleeting expression of discomfort flashed across her face, but it vanished almost instantly.
She said, "I need to take this call. Wait here. Sales clerk, could you please pack this outfit?"
Something was fishy!
James had been Jennifer's husband for five years, and he knew her too well. Her reaction just now was a dead giveaway that she was keeping something from him.
"Who is it?" he casually asked.
"A friend," Jennifer answered.
"Male or female?" James inquired again.
"It's a man..." Jennifer paused abruptly, furrowing her brow in annoyance. "What does it matter if it's a man or a woman? Do I need to report to you every time I take a call?"
Her voice was slightly raised, catching the attention of those around them. People turned to look.
After saying this, Jennifer ignored James and went out to take the call, walking away quickly and soon disappearing. James was left in the store, the subject of gossip and speculation by many.
"Poor guy, that beauty just now is his wife, right?"
"It seems like his wife went out to talk to her lover, huh?"
"Why is this guy so indifferent? Could he be a freeloader?"
"It looks like it. Think about how fierce his wife is to him, and he doesn't even dare to say a word. It's no wonder she's cheating on him outside. But his wife is really pretty."
Listening to these discussions, James felt uncomfortable. As a son-in-law, he could ignore the ridicule and contempt from others, but he still cared a lot about Jennifer.
He put down the clothes and walked out. He met Jennifer coming in, her face beaming with a smile. Obviously, the phone call had made her happy. However, as soon as she saw James, her smile vanished, replaced by an icy demeanor.
"Didn't I ask you to wait for me in the store? Why did you follow me?" she asked, annoyed.
"I was worried about you. Why are you so harsh on me?" James suppressed his anger, putting on a natural expression, and inquired, "By the way, who was the person who called you just now? It seemed mysterious. Do I know them?"
James stared intently at Jennifer, and indeed, he noticed a hint of unease in her eyes. "It's a colleague from the office, Mary," Jennifer claimed.
She's lying!
Clearly, the name on the caller ID was "him."
Could Jennifer be lying? Was it possible that the gossip was true?
James felt as if a boulder had been dropped onto his chest, making it difficult for him to breathe.
"Oh, and Mary invited me out for dinner. I won't be able to drop you home. You'll have to hail a cab," Jennifer tossed the words over her shoulder nonchalantly, paid the bill, and drove away before James could utter a word.
As Jennifer's car vanished in the distance, James felt a sharp pang in his heart. He hailed a taxi and followed her, eager to discover who this mysterious person was.
Could the whispers be true? Was she seeing someone behind his back?
"Follow that car," he instructed the taxi driver.
"Bro, that's a tricky business..." the taxi driver said, hesitantly.
Two hundred dollars were stuffed onto the driver's thigh.
The driver's eyes lit up, and he laughed, saying, "Don't worry, brother. There's no car in Lindwood City that this old guy can't catch up with."
James paid no heed to the driver's boast, focusing solely on Jennifer's car.
After about twenty minutes, Jennifer pulled up in front of a restaurant. James disembarked and soon found out who Jennifer was meeting.
A strikingly handsome man came into view.
The man was around his age, decked out in designer gear and oozing a distinctive charm. He was clearly a successful and talented individual.
What set him apart was his good looks, surpassing any heartthrob in the entertainment industry. The usually reserved Jennifer morphed into a shy maiden in his presence, her face beaming with joy.
Despite the distance, James could feel Jennifer's elation.
She had never shown him such a smile in their years of marriage!
In that instant, James felt a vice-like grip on his heart, a discomfort so intense that he felt cold all over, struggling for a breath.
In his five years of marriage to the Johnson family, he had endured countless snubs, mockery, disdain, and verbal abuse. But none of that compared to the agony he was experiencing now!
If it weren't for his lingering sanity, if his restraints hadn't been lifted, he would've charged right over and given the man a good beating!
Taking a deep breath, he concealed himself and continued to observe.
He clung to a glimmer of hope. Maybe things weren't as they seemed. Perhaps Jennifer hadn't betrayed him and was merely catching up with an old friend.
Although he knew, the likelihood was small.
Lurking in the corner, he was like a phantom, a piece of decoration, unnoticed by all.
But as time wore on, his heart grew colder. Jennifer and this man were enjoying their conversation too much. Her constant smiling, he knew all too well what that implied as a man!
The man flattered her, "Jennifer, you look even more beautiful after all this time we haven't met."
Jennifer replied, coyly, "Really? Charles, are you just trying to make me happy?"
The man, Charles, insisted, "No, really, Jennifer, among all the women I've met, you're the most beautiful and elegant." The man's gaze was fixed on Jennifer, not hiding his intense feelings for her.
Jennifer blushed under his gaze. She replied, "Charles, please don't look at me like that. I'm already married."
The man's expression darkened briefly at her words, and then he quickly regained his composure.
"Jennifer, I've been waiting for you. Leave him and be with me. I'll make you the happiest woman in the world, I swear!" He said as he raised three fingers, making a solemn vow.
Jennifer looked up at him, sighed, and said, "Charles, give me a little more time."
"How much more time do you need? I've been waiting for two years, and I can't wait any longer!" Charles exclaimed, his emotions running high as he tried to grasp Jennifer.
Suddenly, a wine bottle materialized, smashing onto the table before him, narrowly missing his hand. A silhouette emerged, warning, "You better keep your hands to yourself!"
