Chapter 410 The Suddenly Appearing Johnson Family
Jennifer pulled out her phone and saw Harmony's name flashing on the screen. James noticed it too, glancing at the display.
Jennifer shot James a questioning look, wondering if she should pick up. James sighed and gave a slight nod, signaling her to go ahead.
"Hey, Harmony," Jennifer answered.
Harmony's voice came through, "Hey, Jennifer, are you still up?"
The room was so quiet that James could hear every word. They were still wrapped up in each other, making the whole situation feel pretty awkward.
"Nope, not asleep," Jennifer replied.
Harmony continued, "I can't sleep either."
Clearly, Harmony had no clue what was going on with Jennifer. She sounded lazy, like she was just chatting about whatever, "Is James asleep?"
Jennifer glanced at James and lied, "Yeah, he's out."
"I'm so jealous you get to sleep next to him," Harmony said, sounding envious.
James frowned. 'Do they usually talk like this?'
Jennifer felt a bit guilty and tried to laugh it off. "What's there to be jealous of? We're married."
"Yeah, you guys are married," Harmony said, her tone turning playful. "So, I'm the third wheel."
James was taken aback.
Seeing James's reaction, Jennifer got even more flustered. She quickly said, "Harmony, I'm really tired. Can we talk tomorrow?"
Harmony sounded surprised. "Going to bed this early?"
"Yeah, I have to get up early. Goodnight," Jennifer said, hanging up and turning off her phone.
The room fell silent again, but this time it was an awkward silence.
Still in James's arms, Jennifer finally spoke, "Harmony was just messing around. Don't take it seriously."
James let out a self-mocking laugh. He was finding it harder to understand Jennifer. What was she up to? No matter how close she was with Harmony, this was too much.
He sighed, "What have you and Harmony been talking about?"
"Nothing," Jennifer shook her head.
"Really?" James sounded skeptical.
"Yeah!" Jennifer insisted, but her eyes gave her away.
James felt helpless. He knew she wouldn't spill, so he didn't push it. "Don't forget, I'm your husband."
Jennifer nodded vigorously. Then she asked, "So, should we continue?"
After Harmony's call, neither of them was in the mood, especially James. He gently kissed Jennifer and said, "Let's just sleep."
"Okay," Jennifer said, snuggling into James's arms. It was the first time she had slept like this, listening to his heartbeat and feeling a sense of security she hadn't felt before. Exhausted and usually plagued by insomnia, she quickly drifted off with a sweet smile.
James listened to her steady breathing, knowing she was out cold. He kissed her forehead gently and closed his eyes, slowly falling asleep too.
The next morning, James woke up first. Jennifer was still asleep. He carefully slipped out of bed, but as he lifted the blanket, he caught a glimpse of her alluring figure, which made his heart race. Jennifer was always perfect, making her irresistible.
Thinking about how Harmony's call had ruined such a good moment last night, James felt pretty frustrated.
When he got to the living room, Kaitlyn and Dennis were already up, and Kaitlyn had even made breakfast.
James had a morning routine, not just for running but to enjoy the fresh air and morning sun, which always made him feel great.
When he got back from his run, Jennifer was awake and in her home clothes. Their eyes met, and she blushed, clearly thinking about last night.
Even though they hadn't gone all the way, James had kissed her until her lips were almost swollen, and his hands had explored every inch of her body. Thinking about it made her face flush with embarrassment.
James was also excited, determined to find a chance to be with Jennifer.
The day after tomorrow was a holiday. For the past five years, the four of them had celebrated together, buying food and having a good time.
During breakfast, Dennis seemed distracted. Jennifer noticed and asked, "Dad, you okay?"
Dennis didn't hear her at first, still staring blankly at his food. It wasn't until Jennifer raised her voice that he snapped out of it. "What?" he asked, startled.
His reaction made it clear something was up. Jennifer put down her utensils and asked seriously, "Dad, what's going on?"
Dennis sighed, looking conflicted. Kaitlyn chimed in, "It's the Johnson Family. They called and want us to come back and celebrate the holiday with them."
"The Johnson Family?" Jennifer frowned, her face turning cold with no hint of nostalgia, just disgust.
"Why go back? We've been out here for years, and they haven't cared about us once," Jennifer said coldly. "I haven't forgotten how harsh they were to us before!"
James rarely saw Jennifer so disgusted, even hostile. Her words made her hatred and resentment clear.
In the five years James had been part of the family, he had rarely heard them mention the Johnson Family, and he had never met anyone from that side.
