Chapter 358 Waiting for the Day of Death
Jennifer heard this and just lost it, laughing like she’d heard the best joke ever. "So you made James sign for my happiness? Wow, how kind of you! But have you ever thought about what I actually want? Kicking James out, just like five years ago, shoving me into some stranger's arms, is that your idea of happiness?" she yelled.
Dennis was caught off guard and stammered, "W-We've g-got over twenty years on you. We’ve seen more, we know more. You can't forget James now because it’s not time yet. When the time comes, you'll forget him naturally."
"Really?" Jennifer shot back, her voice icy as she stared him down. "If you think time will make me forget him, then fine, just wait. I’ve got all the time in the world to forget, no need for your concern."
Dennis was seriously pissed. Jennifer didn’t seem to respect him as his father at all and kept heading out. Kaitlyn grabbed her arm, "Jennifer, we know James leaving is tough to swallow right now. But you’ve got to take care of yourself. You’re not a kid anymore. You can’t just starve yourself; it’s bad for your health," Kaitlyn pleaded.
"Mom, let me go. You all think I can forget James, then give me time to forget. Ten years, twenty years, fifty years, until the day I forget, I’ll eat well. Right now, I’ve got to get to the clinic. This is the career he left for me. I can’t let him down," Jennifer said firmly, her face calm but her eyes betraying her pain.
Dennis blocked the door, glaring at her, "You’re not going anywhere until you finish this food."
Jennifer stared back, her eyes so calm it was frightening, boring into Dennis.
"If I finish this food, you’ll let me go, right?" she asked, her voice eerily calm.
Dennis responded, "Yeah, if you finish this food, I’ll let you go."
"Okay, you promise." Jennifer turned back to the table, grabbed the food, and started shoving it into her mouth with her hands. She had no appetite and was practically choking it down, tears streaming down her face, but her expression was blank.
In five seconds flat, she’d swallowed all the food, her face red, still chewing, and mumbled, "I did it. Happy now?"
Then she walked up to Dennis and said calmly, "Move."
Seeing her like this, Dennis and Kaitlyn’s eyes welled up, especially Kaitlyn, who started crying and hugged Jennifer, "What are you doing? You’re killing us with worry," she sobbed.
Jennifer swallowed the last bit of food and gasped, "Isn’t this what you wanted? I did what you asked, can I go now?"
Dennis trembled as he stared at her, "Why are you so stubborn? We want you to take care of yourself, not torture yourself like this."
Jennifer's eyes finally got red, but she held back the tears. She wasn't one to cry easily; she'd cried more in this short time than in her whole life.
"Compared to losing James, what I just did is nothing," she said, fighting herself to stay calm.
Seeing her like this, Dennis felt a wave of regret. His face changed, emotions all over the place. He wanted to yell at her more, but he just couldn't. Finally, he let out a long sigh, "Jennifer, why are you doing this? James is crippled, it's not just about looks. With that bad of a fire, even if he survives, he won't live long. If you stay with him, you'll waste ten or eight years, and then you won't be able to marry well. Your life will be ruined, don't you get it?" Dennis kept rambling.
Jennifer laughed bitterly, "So you forced James to sign? Building my so-called happiness on James's pain? Do you know that the day before you made him sign, I promised him that if he didn't abandon me, I wouldn't abandon him, either. Do you know how much that hurt him?"
At this point, Jennifer couldn't hold back anymore and broke down crying. She was too weak from days of lack of sleep and food. Now, she was clutching the pang in her chest to stay upright.
"Jennifer, what's wrong? Jennifer!" Kaitlyn and Dennis yelled, panicking, trying to support her.
Jennifer pushed them away and shouted, "Don't touch me."
Then she looked at them and said firmly, "Dad, Mom, I'm not afraid to tell you. James is the first man in my life and the only man. If he comes back, great. If he doesn't, I won't get close to any other man for the rest of my life. I'll wait for him until the day I die."
Her voice wasn't loud, just enough for them to hear. The determination in her tone was undeniable, like a fact.
Kaitlyn and Dennis's faces changed dramatically, filled with panic and regret. Especially Kaitlyn, who cried even harder, hugging Jennifer and constantly apologizing and trying to persuade her. But it was no use.
That day, Jennifer's attempt to leave failed. Kaitlyn and Dennis took turns watching the door. Jennifer had no choice but to stay in her room.
Since that day at the clinic, after Ulysses' visit, her insomnia had gotten worse. She couldn't fall asleep for hours and was exhausted. Lying in bed, she finally fell into a fitful sleep amidst her memories.
But even her sleep was restless. In the living room, Dennis and Kaitlyn were filled with regret, panic, and helplessness. They never expected Jennifer to have such deep feelings for James. Her behavior had truly scared them.
They kept watch until evening. Dennis fell asleep leaning against the door. Suddenly, the doorbell woke him up. He got up to open the door and was taken by surprise.
"Leopold, why are you all back?" Dennis asked.
Standing at the door were none other than Leopold, Eirian, and Dorian.
