Chapter 48 Strange Disease
Michael quickly mentioned a location, and James rushed over to Lindwood City's most luxurious five-star hotel. When James got out of the Maserati, he attracted a lot of attention—not because of the car itself, as Maserati owners are prestigious but not extremely rare, but because he was dressed in cheap clothes, looking like a delivery person. The mismatch between his demeanor and the Maserati made the hotel security mistakenly think he had stolen the car.
Soon, guided by Randall, James found himself in a luxurious private room, where Michael, preparing a table full of delicacies, awaited him.
"Dr. Smith, you're here. Please, have a seat," Michael greeted warmly.
James replied, "Mr. Brown, how generous of you for treating me to such a lavish meal.”
Michael personally poured wine for James, a gesture that would surprise his colleagues, as Michael was known for his pride. Even when dining with the mayor, he wouldn't lower himself like this.
"It's necessary," Michael said seriously. "Last time, Dr. Smith, you left in a hurry without leaving your contact information. I have not properly entertained you, and for that, I have been reprimanded by my father. Today, as my apology, Dr. Smith, you must finish the wine."
James clinked glasses with Michael, drank the wine, then took the wine jug and poured it for Michael before filling his own glass. He raised his glass sincerely, saying, "Mr. Brown, thank you for helping me out today."
And he emptied the glass in one go.
His words came from the heart. He had enjoyed humiliating John earlier, especially when John knelt before him like shit. It was immensely satisfying, a feeling of release.
John had humiliated him repeatedly, and James had long held a grudge against him. However, due to his five-year constraint, he couldn't actively seek revenge. Michael's intervention today was a perfect act of vengeance, not only humiliating John but also cutting off his financial resources. James was grateful to Michael, even though he knew that Michael's visit was likely to be a request for something.
Michael also finished his drink and waved his hand, saying, "It's just a piece of cake. Besides, I really dislike pretentious people."
Since Michael had set up a feast to entertain him, James ate generously without hesitation. Since the seal had begun to loosen, his appetite had greatly increased. At home, he dared not eat too much, but now he could eat as much as he liked.
Michael grew increasingly curious about James's identity. As the wealthiest man in Lindwood City, most people would be intimidated by his presence, but James remained calm and composed, showing no signs of restraint due to his status, which intrigued Michael.
Moreover, his investigation revealed that James was an unemployed stay-at-home husband for five years, adding to his confusion.
Although he had met many people, he couldn't quite figure James out.
Of course, he wasn't foolish enough to voice this doubt. From the moment James arrived, he didn't mention it, indicating that James didn't want to discuss it.
Perhaps everyone had their secrets.
After several rounds of drinks, Michael felt the timing was right to broach the main topic. "Dr. Smith, besides repaying you for saving my father's life last time, there’s also another matter I need your help with."
James set down his glass, knowing that Michael's grand gesture meant there was a challenging task ahead. "Mr. Brown, feel free to speak. If I can help, I won't refuse," he said with a smile.
As Michael poured wine for James, he began, "I won't beat around the bush. I want you to see my sister."
James was taken aback and responded, "Mr. Brown, I'm already married."
"Oh, I know you're married... Oh look at my brain," Michael said, feeling embarrassed. "It's like this—my sister has a strange illness. We've consulted many doctors and visited numerous hospitals but haven't found a cure. We don't even know what illness it is..."
Michael sighed deeply, his face filled with sorrow.
"Is it a disease similar to your father’s?" James inquired curiously.
"No," Michael replied with a touch of sadness in his eyes. "My sister's illness is even more bizarre than my father's. Her entire body is covered in snake scales, which cause her unbearable itching and pain every night, feeling like she's better off dead. These cursed snake scales initially only covered her waist, but they've gradually spread and are close to covering her entire body!"
He clenched his fists in sorrow.
James furrowed his brow. In common sense, humans couldn't grow snake scales, given the biological differences between primates and reptiles.
Medically speaking, such a condition didn't exist unless...
"Mr. Brown, have you tried consulting a Taoist master?" James asked seriously.
Michael nodded at first, then shook his head, sighing, "We've tried everything in desperation. While the highly-paid master we hired last time even worsened my sister's condition. Ah!"
He then looked earnestly at James. "Dr. Smith, do you think you can cure my sister's strange illness?"
James didn't respond immediately. Instead, he raised his glass, took a sip, and then said, "There is a chance, but..."
Upon hearing this, Michael immediately stood up in delight, extremely excited. " Thank God! I knew you were a miracle doctor, Dr. Smith. If you could cure my father's illness, you can surely cure my sister's! This is fantastic, truly fantastic!"
James sighed, "Mr. Brown, hold on a moment. I haven't finished speaking."
Michael's expression froze, and then he said very seriously, "Dr. Smith, as long as you can cure my sister's illness, I'm willing to pay a billion in medical fees!"
A billion? James was slightly taken aback, but considering Michael's status, a billion wasn't excessive. Moreover, very few people could treat this 'illness,' and he was one of the few.
"It's not about the money," James said with a wry smile. "But to treat this illness, there's a condition: the patient must be completely naked for me to administer treatment..."
