Chapter 170 James! I Want You to Die
"Don't play dumb! You know exactly what I'm talking about." Harmony's eyes widened as she glared at him, attempting to intimidate him, but instead, it came off as teasing.
James tensed up further, swallowing hard and shaking his head to indicate his ignorance.
Harmony narrowed her eyes, gritting her teeth. She grabbed James by the collar, lifting him up, and then pushed him against the wall.
"James, do you really think I wouldn't dare do anything to you?"
"Don't do anything rash. I'm your best friend's husband."
But as he said this, both of their bodies trembled slightly, and their hearts stirred intensely. They felt even more excited as if they were tasting forbidden fruit.
Women are emotional creatures, often more easily moved than men. Harmony, usually a calm person, found herself in an unexpected situation today. Staring at James's face so close to hers, her body secreted more and more hormones, and she was driven by an intrinsic force.
Finally, driven by emotion, her body gradually leaned towards James.
The already short distance between them began to shrink even further.
James's pupils widened in shock, and he clenched his fists involuntarily, holding his breath.
However, at that moment, a person's image suddenly flashed in his mind.
It jolted him awake as if a bowl of cold water poured on his body. He quickly turned his head, narrowly avoiding Harmony's lips, which were about to press against his.
"It was Jared who told me to," he blurted out, seizing the opportunity to put some distance between them.
Harmony was stunned, unable to react for a moment. In her mind, she had already prepared for the kiss, but at the critical moment, James suddenly pulled away, catching her off guard.
"What?" she asked, staring at James in confusion.
James, still shaken, was relieved that he had come to his senses in time. If he had said it one second later, he would have kissed Harmony!
"You were asking why I called you yesterday. It was Jared who asked me to." James said earnestly, recounting the events of the previous day to Harmony.
Harmony's face turned red, and she listened absentmindedly to James's words, her mind elsewhere.
Her heart pounded wildly, and it was difficult to calm.
'Oh my God, what had I been thinking, wanting to kiss James? Was I crazy?' She cried inwardly.
Even when she was with Jared, she had never been this reckless.
And James was her good friend's husband.
Harmony patted her chest, taking a deep breath.
"That's the whole story," James concluded, noticing Harmony's dazed expression. He waved a hand in front of her. "Did you catch any of that?"
"Huh?" Harmony exclaimed, refocusing on James, "What did you just say?"
James rolled his eyes helplessly and explained again, "That's the whole story. To be honest, Jared is quite infatuated with you. He gave me five million dollars even without a blink."
Harmony, gritting her teeth, glared at James and cursed. "Are you an idiot? He told you to block me, and you did it!"
James rolled his eyes again and said, "Come on, he gave me five million dollars. Besides, haven't you always hated me? Blocking me shouldn't affect you."
Harmony's expression froze upon hearing this. For a moment, she was at a loss for words. Indeed, she used to despise James. There was a time when he was the man she hated the most, and just hearing his name annoyed her.
But who could have predicted this?
At that moment, Harmony's phone, which was on the table, rang. She picked it up and saw that it was Jared calling. Her face instantly darkened as she answered the call.
"Hello, Harmony, it's me. I've been thinking a lot about what you said last time..."
Before he could finish, Harmony cut him off. "Jared, you're disgusting! You tried to bribe James to block me? Do you think that will make me reconcile with you? Let me tell you, there's no chance, not a single one! We're done, completely done! Even if all the men in the world were gone, I wouldn't get back with you! And from now on, I don't want to see you again. If you're still a man, stay away from me. As far away as possible!"
Harmony finished her tirade in one breath and immediately hung up the phone, not giving Jared a chance to respond.
She rarely lost her temper like this. Jared's actions made her feel utterly disgusted and contemptuous. To think she had liked this man for so long before—she must have been blind.
On Jared's side, his face turned extremely grim. He wasn't alone in the room; there were several others present. Because he had the phone on speaker, everyone heard what Harmony had just said.
"Jared, it seems your charm isn't working. Harmony has made her feelings quite clear," one said.
Today was a small gathering of these rich heirs. They had suddenly brought up the topic of Jared and Harmony. Jared, having drunk quite a bit, was egged on by the others to call Harmony. He never expected such an outcome!
It was a complete loss of his pride, making him a laughingstock.
His face twisted with rage as he clenched his phone, almost crushing it.
"Yeah, what's going on? Isn't Harmony your fiancée? Why is she treating you so badly?" another rich heir joked.
Jared took a couple of deep breaths, trying hard to control his emotions, and then said, "Well, you know, women's tempers were quite unpredictable. It's my fault for being too busy lately and not spending enough time with Harmony, making her angry. But it's okay; I'll make it up to her in a few days."
His poor acting didn't fool anyone. But since they were all friends, no one bothered to expose his lie.
This incident killed Jared's mood for drinking. He found an excuse to leave early.
Once outside, he threw his phone to the ground with force, smashing it to pieces. Gritting his teeth, his eyes blazing with fury, he almost spat out the words. "James! I want you to die!"
Never in his life had he been played like this, nor had anyone dared to treat him this way.
James's actions had crossed his bottom line, and he would not let it slide.
The people in the car didn't dare to speak, fearing they might provoke Jared's wrath, and they trembled in silence.
It took a full minute for Jared to calm down. When he opened his eyes, they were bloodshot and terrifyingly fierce.
"I will do more Investigation! Increase the efforts to dig up dirt on James. I want to see him in utter despair as soon as possible!" Jared said through gritted teeth.
At this moment, one of his subordinates cautiously suggested, "Boss, I found out that in a few days, it's the opening day of James's wife's clinic. Maybe we can do something about that?"
