Chapter 199 Unworthy of Being a Doctor
Their laughter was piercing, their faces full of mockery, and their demeanor exuded a sense of superiority that no longer hid their disdain for Jennifer and her companions.
"You!" Jennifer immediately became furious.
"Hey, Dr. Johnson, are you really getting angry over this? We were just joking," one of the doctors said mockingly, showing his disdain for Jennifer and her clinic.
Jennifer's face was as cold as frost. She was a person of great composure, never arguing with others and always choosing to ignore unreasonable people.
But these three had gone too far. Jennifer had been displeased with their tactics for days, and now they had come to provoke her, which was unbearable for her.
At this moment, James took her hand, gave her a calming look, and then asked them, "Did you come here just to show off?"
"Who are you?"
The oldest of the doctors, seeing James holding Jennifer's hand so intimately, frowned and asked rudely, feeling uncomfortable.
A few days ago, he saw Jennifer and was struck by her beauty. He had seen many people in his life, but rarely someone as beautiful and graceful as Jennifer.
He had an evil plan; he intended to use his new clinic to suppress Jennifer's, and when the Hall of Benevolent Medicine's business declined, he would show his interest in recruiting her. It made him very uncomfortable that the man held Jennifer's hand so intimately.
James immediately saw through his covetous intentions towards Jennifer and sneered inwardly. Without answering him, he said calmly, "As doctors, you merely learned some basic medical skills and became complacent. To make profits, you use despicable means to slander us. But what you omit is the subtle harm to patients' bodies by your unnecessary strong medications. Shame on you!"
When the two intern doctors heard these words, they were immediately scared, shrinking their necks and lowering their heads, afraid of being implicated.
While receiving a hint from the older doctor, their expression changed.
After a brief silence, they exploded, glaring at James.
"Who do you think you are? What right do you have to lecture us!"
"Watch your mouth! When did we slander you? Stop making baseless accusations or we'll sue you for defamation!"
"Do you have any evidence that we slandered you? Are you just jealous of losing your business to us?"
"Besides, who do you think you are? Do we even need to slander you? What a joke!"
"I'm telling you, you'd better apologize to us or face the consequences!"
They didn't want to let James off.
James, however, smiled, "I was just speaking casually. Why are you so agitated? Could it be that you have a guilty conscience, and I hit the mark?"
They then realized their reaction had indeed been too much, making them look guilty.
The eldest doctor, clearly the leader of the three, snorted, quickly regained his composure and stared at James disdainfully. "Smooth talker! You have no other skills but a talent for boasting!"
"They can only deceive those old folks. Young people nowadays are not so easily fooled. Their business has been declining these days, and soon, they won't be able to deceive anyone and will go bankrupt!"
"The sooner they go bankrupt, the better. They are harming the public. Only we can benefit patients."
Their words drew the attention of many diners around, who began to look over and join in the suspicion and even slander against James and his companions.
Jennifer was very agitated, but but it was in her nature not to say anything harsh, even when she was very angry.
"Have you said enough?" James spoke at this moment, his face expressionless, neither showing anger nor smiling, very calm, as if unaffected.
"Is there anything you want to say now? Are you starting to regret slandering us? Asshole," the older doctor sneered.
"We're all in the same profession," he continued. "I didn't come here just to mock you; I'm not that bored. Let's put it this way. You've seen the situation these past few days. With our clinic around, your business will only get worse. From what I know, your rent isn't cheap. How much longer can you hold out?"
Without permission, he sat down with a proud smile on his face and continued, "Coincidentally, I'm known for being a helpful person. Since your business is failing, you could sell your clinic to me."
Hearing this, Jennifer finally understood that these three were scheming against their clinic.
'How shameless!' she exclaimed inwardly.
Unable to hold back, Jennifer coldly said, "You want to take over our clinic? There is not a chance for you! Even if we go bankrupt, we won't sell it! You can forget about it. Besides, it's not certain who will go bankrupt first. With your dirty means, you are not real doctors! Sooner or later, you'll have to face the consequences!"
Seeing Jennifer unmoved, the older doctor became somewhat angry, snorting heavily and saying, "I see you won't give up until you hit rock bottom. I'm giving you a chance to cooperate, and you refuse. When you can't hold out any longer and come for us, the terms won't be as good as they are now!"
In truth, he really wanted Jennifer's clinic. Its location, size, and decor were all much better than their current clinic. Acquiring it would be a huge boost to their medical practice.
Jennifer's refusal was infuriating.
But he wasn't worried. With his tactics, he didn't believe Jennifer could hold out for long, and by then, the price of selling her clinic would be even lower.
"Let's wait and see," he said coldly.
With that, the three of them left.
Watching them leave the restaurant, Jennifer was furious and couldn't help but curse, "How can there be such shameless people who actually want to take over our clinic?"
James, however, wasn't angry. He served Jennifer some food and smiled. "Don't let such people upset you and ruin your mood. They can say whatever they want; we can't stop them."
"But they're doctors! They took an oath to uphold medical ethics. Look at what they're doing, completely betraying doctors' principles and vows! How can there be such people?" Jennifer was so angry that she couldn't eat.
James said, "What's there to be confused about? It's not just in the medical field; every profession has its bad actors. Haven't there been enough scandals in various fields in recent years? It's a part of human nature that can't be changed. On average, out of every hundred people, there are bound to be a few bad ones. It's inevitable. We don't need to care about them; we just need to do our part well."
"Besides, when we took our medical oaths, we were prepared to face all kinds of difficulties. What we're encountering now is just one of those challenges. If we can't overcome them, how can we talk about benefiting the public?"
James's words struck Jennifer like a bolt of lightning, leaving her stunned and deeply moved.
She stared at James, suddenly realizing how much he had changed—not just in his medical skills but also in his thinking.
'Where has the useless and timid James gone?' she thought.
At that moment, she seemed to see a reflection of her former mentor in James—so dignified, authoritative, and respectable.
The two intern doctors beside them also looked at James with admiration.
Feeling a bit embarrassed under Jennifer's gaze, James rubbed his nose and said, "What's wrong? Did I say something incorrect?"
This gesture broke the solemn atmosphere, turning him back from the imposing mentor to the ordinary James.
