Chapter 12
Room assignments were handed out and settled quickly.
Arthur glanced at the group. "Anyone up for forming another team?"
"You can team up for activities and meals."
"There's strength in numbers. It’s more efficient to find supplies or help the villagers in exchange for food."
"Pairing up guys and girls can make the work less tiring. You can also form mixed teams."
Lisa's eyes lit up at Arthur's suggestion.
"Great idea, I’m in," she said eagerly.
She turned to Brenda. "Brenda, let's room together and form a team."
Knowing Kevin's protective nature towards Brenda, he’d naturally join their team.
Eugene seemed easygoing and already had a following.
Teaming up with them would definitely boost her exposure and popularity.
Brenda actually wanted to team up with Raymond.
Daily interactions might make him see her worth.
But she knew it wasn’t realistic since Raymond and Kevin didn’t get along.
Teaming up with Eugene first was also a good move; she planned to steal him away from Elizabeth completely.
"Sure, no problem," she said.
Kevin chimed in, "Then I'll join you and Eugene."
Eugene, who originally wanted to team up with Elizabeth, fell silent.
He still wanted to clear up the misunderstanding with Elizabeth, but Kevin was messing up his plans.
"Fine by me," he said.
He joined the show not just to patch things up with Elizabeth but also to look out for Brenda, so teaming up with her made sense.
Their team was now set.
Raymond turned to Ronald. "Those two rooms have teamed up. Should we join forces with the other two guys?"
Ronald, always easygoing, nodded. "Sure, but we should see if they're on board."
He smiled at Elizabeth and Nancy. "How about the four of us team up? What do you think?"
Elizabeth and Nancy had no objections.
Arthur saw the eight guests forming two teams and was pleased with the promising start.
"From now on, it's your own time," Arthur said, then retreated to a corner of the courtyard with a few staff members.
Only the live-streaming camera operators stayed with the guests.
Having climbed up from the foot of the mountain, everyone was tired and planned to rest before going out to find work in exchange for food.
Raymond lazily sat in a chair and asked the group, "Should we go directly to the village and ask each household if they need help?"
He had never been on a show like this before, so he wasn't very knowledgeable.
Ronald agreed, "We don't know the villagers, so we can only ask each household one by one."
Nancy thought this was the way to go too.
Elizabeth, however, had another idea. "I have a suggestion."
The three looked at her. "What’s your suggestion?"
Elizabeth replied, "We can first find the village chief to understand the situation in the village."
"See which households might need help."
"Then we can target those households, saving time and effort."
"And we can also ask if the village chief needs any help."
Elizabeth's suggestion made the others' eyes light up. "Yeah, that's a great idea."
It was unanimously approved.
After Eugene's team left, Elizabeth's team got up and headed out.
Eugene's team went towards the village entrance, planning to ask each household from the first one.
Elizabeth's team, however, asked a villager on the road and found the village chief.
The village chief was aware of the show being filmed in the village and was a bit surprised to see a few celebrities approaching him.
"Do you need something from me?" he asked.
Elizabeth replied, "We want to assess the situation in the village and see if any households require assistance so we can barter for some food."
She continued, "The four of us can offer help with tasks within our capabilities."
The village chief thought these guests were quite astute, for they understood the importance of assessing the village's overall situation rather than approaching each household individually.
He elaborated, "Our village is somewhat underdeveloped due to its remote location and limited transportation access. Many of the young and able-bodied individuals have ventured out for work, leaving behind mainly the elderly and children in the village."
After briefly introducing the village, he thought for a moment and said, "There are a few households that might need help."
"Robert Williams' family is currently picking fruit and might be short-handed."
"William Jones' family..."
Elizabeth borrowed paper and pen from the village chief and jotted down the information he provided.
She also asked for the locations of these households and, based on the village chief's descriptions, drew a simple map.
After the conversation, the village chief saw them out of the office.
Elizabeth suddenly pointed to a tractor in the yard and asked, "Is this tractor broken?"
The village chief nodded. "Yes, it broke down half a month ago, and we haven't been able to get it fixed."
Elizabeth pointed to the tractor. "Is it very inconvenient with the tractor broken?"
The village chief sighed. "Yes, it's very inconvenient. We originally planned to go to town to buy fertilizer and other supplies, but it got delayed."
Elizabeth smiled and said, "If we fix this tractor, can we exchange it for some food as a reward?"
Seeing an opportunity to earn dinner, she naturally wouldn't let it go.
The village chief was stunned. "Can you fix the tractor?"
The other three guests were also stunned and looked at Elizabeth. "Can you fix it?"
They couldn't fix it, so Elizabeth's question made them wonder if she could.
Elizabeth nodded. "I can."
She already knew quite a bit about mechanics and had continuously learned and practiced through tasks with the system.
So fixing a tractor was no problem at all.
Everyone was amazed, clearly not expecting her to be able to fix a tractor.
