Chapter 253 Make Sure You Aren't the One Crying
After Darlene bounced with her crew, Raymond kept his eyes on her and warned, "Darlene's got it out for you. Watch your back."
Elizabeth nodded. "You too, man. If you bump into her, don't get all touchy-feely when you're alone."
Darlene's got more tricks than Brenda ever did.
Raymond chuckled, "Got it. I'll steer clear of her."
He added with a smirk, "Plus, I got that Spellscroll you gave me. She ain't got nothin' on me." He thought, 'Elizabeth's way stronger than Darlene.'
Elizabeth laughed, "You really believe in me, huh?"
Raymond shrugged. "Duh."
They kept chatting as they headed upstairs, then split to their own rooms.
Back in her room, Elizabeth shrugged off her coat and checked out the spot where Darlene had grabbed her. There was this tiny red dot, resembling a new mole, which could easily go unnoticed if one wasn't looking closely.
Elizabeth sneered to herself, 'Darlene's a real piece of work.'
That grab was her trying to plant some nasty spell on her. It was an egg, fed by dark energy. Once inside, it would suck up blood to hatch, then crawl around, spreading bad vibes.
The victim's organs would start to fail, looking like some serious, untreatable disease by the time they hit the doc.
In the end, organs would shut down, and they'd die a painful death. The egg would die too, turning to ash, leaving no trace 'cause of its dark energy roots.
This kind of spell was dark magic, banned by the Divination Association and special departments. It was sneaky, and regular folks or low-level diviners wouldn't even know they were hit.
Casting it was a breeze: just a touch, and the egg would slip through clothes and into the body.
But it was tough to grow, so it was rare.
Elizabeth felt it the moment Darlene grabbed her. She had a good guess what it was. She knew how to deal with it, so she didn't react.
She let Darlene think she succeeded. She could've dodged it easily.
Elizabeth wanted to see what Darlene was up to. But she didn't expect Darlene to go for the kill.
Elizabeth pulled out some special incense from her suitcase and lit it. She held it under her arm.
After a bit, a tiny black egg popped out from the red dot on her arm.
She then drew a counter-spell Spellscroll and burned it.
When the Spellscroll burned out, a wisp of green smoke carried the egg and floated out the door.
It slipped through the crack, floated downstairs to a room, and slipped through another door crack. It landed on a pillow on a big bed, so tiny it was almost invisible.
When Elizabeth grabbed Darlene earlier, she had placed a bit of evil energy on her. This made the counter-spell Spellscroll target Darlene perfectly. The egg, now on Darlene's pillow, would sneak into her body. By the time she noticed, it'd be too late. Even if she didn't die, she'd be in for a world of hurt.
Elizabeth sighed, feeling wiped from all the spellwork today. She took a quick shower and crashed into bed.
Meanwhile, Darlene got back to the hotel after dinner, changed into her PJs, and flopped on the bed, messing around on her phone.
She crashed right on the pillow where the egg was hiding. With just the wall lamp on, the room was dim, so she didn't spot the egg. Soon enough, it burrowed into her head.
Darlene didn't notice a thing and, after two hours of phone scrolling, she knocked out.
In the dead of night, the egg started soaking up her blood and began to hatch.
The next day, Elizabeth, Raymond, and Rex decided to explore the area. Both Elizabeth and Raymond rocked hats and masks, keeping it low-key to avoid getting recognized.
Rex saw them and laughed, "You always wrap yourselves up so tightly when you go out, it's missing a bit of fun, isn't it?"
Elizabeth grinned, "It's a trade-off, no biggie."
Raymond nodded. "Exactly, we dig it."
Rex just rolled his eyes at Raymond and let it go.
They hung out until the afternoon before heading back.
By chance, they bumped into Darlene and her crew again, who seemed to be heading out for dinner.
Darlene spotted Elizabeth and was momentarily stunned, then shot her a playful look.
Elizabeth returned the same playful smile.
Darlene was taken aback again, thinking Elizabeth really didn't know fear. In seven days, Elizabeth would be the one crying.
The groups passed by each other.
Nicole, trailing behind Darlene's group, brushed her hand against Elizabeth's as they passed. In that brief moment, Elizabeth pinched a strand of Nicole's hair without drawing any attention. They didn't exchange glances, a swift and unnoticed exchange.
Back in her room, Elizabeth used some straw she found outside to weave a small doll. She drew a Spellscroll with Darlene's birth date and stuck it on the doll's chest. Then, she wrapped Darlene and Nicole's hair around the doll's neck.
She took out seven Rune stones and arranged them in the shape of the Big Dipper.
Placing the doll in the center, she chanted a spell.
Wisps of energy emerged from her body, causing the seven Rune stones to shift positions continuously.
With a forceful "Break!" the doll stood up, the Rune stones attaching themselves to its head, chest, back, and limbs.
Elizabeth kept chanting, then grabbed a handful of flour from a prepared bowl and sprinkled it on the doll.
The flour fell off the doll and instantly turned black. After nine repetitions, the doll combusted into ashes, leaving only the Spellscroll intact. Though drained and hit by a mild backlash, Elizabeth managed to salvage the burnt edges of the Spellscroll, planning to use it strategically at the jewelry market.
The next day, after a quiet lunch, Elizabeth, Matthew, and their group headed to the jewelry market by car. As fate would have it, they ran into Darlene's group at the entrance. Spotting Matthew and his wife, Darlene sneered, "Hannah, Matthew, our company is snagging all the top-quality gems today, so brace yourselves."
Hannah, unfazed, shot back, "You want another beatdown? If it weren't for the setting, I'd already be on it."
Darlene, knowing Hannah wouldn't act here, was fearless. She retorted, "Did I hit a nerve? Look at that reaction!"
Then she glanced at Elizabeth and mocked, "You guys are hilarious, bringing a divination master to a gem appraisal. Planning to use some magic tricks?"
Elizabeth met her gaze steadily. She shot back, "No need to worry, Ms. Spellscroll. Just think about how you'll explain to your foster parents and company execs if you flop."
Darlene, full of confidence, said, "You'll be disappointed because that won't happen."
Elizabeth said meaningfully, "I think we won't be disappointed. Just make sure you aren't the one crying."
Darlene snorted, "Same old story, just wait."
Elizabeth replied calmly, "Alright, we'll wait!"
With that, Darlene led her group inside first.
