Chapter 339 What Does This Have to Do with Me?
Amy's words left Eugene totally stunned. He shot a quick look at Elizabeth, worried she might get the wrong idea.
With a bit of frustration, he said, "Mom, seriously, stop overthinking everything. You don't need to stress about my stuff."
He'd known Elizabeth forever and got her completely. She was over him; she was done and dusted. He went on, "Caleb broke the law and needs to face the music. He's done so much wrong that no one can save him. Quit trying to bail him out, or you'll just get yourself in trouble."
Amy's face turned red with anger. "You ungrateful brat, Caleb's your cousin! How can you stand to see him rot in prison?"
When Caleb was born, she'd already been helping out the King Family. He'd been spoiled since day one; he couldn't handle tough times.
Eugene replied stoically, "Of course I can handle it, and I'd even cheer for it. If he can't deal with it, what about the people he messed with? Can they handle it?"
He added, looking serious, "I just don't get it. You support the King Family every month. You consistently back the King Family, aiding their business expansion under Dad's legacy, and they are financially stable. So why does Caleb still do shady stuff?"
Amy hesitated; she wanted to know too. Every year, she gave a lot to her nieces and nephews. She even bought them houses and cars. Caleb shouldn't be strapped for cash, so why go illegal?
'He must've been led astray,' she thought, convincing herself more and more.
"He was probably led astray. Maybe he didn't even do those things; he might've just been there or got framed. Caleb likes to have fun, but he's not bad," Amy said.
Eugene was silent. If Caleb wasn't bad, then Amy must be turning a blind eye. "Mom, I think you're really losing it. If Caleb isn't bad, then what is?" he asked.
Amy was pissed. "How can you talk like that? Caleb's my nephew. How can you say that? If he's bad, then what about me and your grandmother?"
Eugene shot back, "His awful actions are because you let him get away with it. In your eyes, he's not even bad. Your need to save him shows the King Family is just rotten. Mom, you're the same. Deep down, you're full of venom and cruelty." He couldn't hold back anymore.
Now he got it. Caleb wasn't a good guy, and neither were Amy and the King Family.
Amy was so mad she almost smashed her phone. "You... you..."
Eugene actually called her and Ada bad, mean, and malicious. She was beyond furious. She couldn't help but curse. But Eugene wasn't the obedient son craving motherly love anymore. As soon as she started cursing, Eugene hung up. He even blocked Amy.
Hearing the busy tone, Amy was so angry she wanted to rush to Aevum City and beat Eugene to a pulp.
After hanging up, Eugene saw everyone looking at him with sympathetic and speechless eyes. He coughed and pointed to his head. "My mom's got some mental issues, so don't mind her."
Everyone else thought Amy was seriously off her rocker. She still wanted to bail Caleb, and they just couldn't wrap their heads around it. But to have spoiled Caleb like this, Amy couldn't be a good person either. Having a mom like Amy, Eugene was pretty unlucky.
Luckily, Elizabeth had broken up with him; otherwise, having a mother-in-law like Amy would be a nightmare.
Elizabeth had good hearing and caught what Amy said on the phone. She could even guess Amy's intentions. It seemed the lesson wasn't enough; more was needed.
After chatting for a bit, everyone went back to their rooms. A while later, Elizabeth's phone rang. She saw it was an unknown number but answered it anyway. "Hello?"
Amy's voice came from the other end, "Elizabeth, I'm Eugene's mom."
Elizabeth raised an eyebrow, asking, "Mrs. Baker, what can I do for you?"
Amy was still fuming at Eugene and couldn't reach Orlando and Percy. Then the King Family kept calling her, pushing her to save Caleb.
Feeling cornered, Amy found Elizabeth's number and called her. She asked, "What will it take for you to let Caleb go?"
Elizabeth sneered, "Mrs. Baker, Eugene said you had mental issues, and it seems he was right. I suggest you see a doctor. Caleb broke the law. You should ask a lawyer if the law will let him go. So, what does this have to do with me?"
Amy paused, caught off guard by Eugene throwing shade at Elizabeth. She wanted to strangle him.
She held back her anger and said, "You are responsible for what happened to Caleb."
She then threatened, "If you ever want to be the part of Baker Family, you better find a way to save Caleb. Otherwise, I will never acknowledge you."
Elizabeth laughed. "How confident are you to say such narcissistic and shameless things? I don't care about you Baker Family. Honestly, even if you begged me, I wouldn't enter the door."
She then sneered, "You won't acknowledge me? Who do you think you are? Do I need your acknowledgment? Even though I left the Clark Family, I was once a true heiress. Where do you get the nerve to lecture me? Just because you're more shameless?"
The more Amy cared about status, the more Elizabeth wanted to undermine it. Sure enough, Amy's face turned pale with anger. "You bitch," she shouted.
Elizabeth retorted, "The names you call others say more about you than them."
Amy was speechless. "You... Elizabeth, I warn you; you'd better be sensible and bail Caleb. Otherwise, I won't let Eugene be with you, and I'll make your life difficult."
She truly thought this way. If Elizabeth did not secure Caleb's release, she would have people harm Elizabeth. They would strip her bare, perhaps even gang-rape her, and release videos and photos to utterly destroy her reputation. Elizabeth would regret it immensely, and her son would no longer remember that woman with any fondness.
