Chapter 479 Aren't You Worried About Stirring Up Trouble?
Brenda was released and suddenly found herself without a place to go.
She couldn't return to the Clark family; Betty despised her and wouldn't take her in again. Vincent had cut ties with her. Piper was already in prison. Even though Brenda had helped hire a good lawyer, Piper was still sentenced to forty years. Given the lengthy sentence, Brenda doubted Piper would survive until her release.
She later learned that the Clark, Baker, and Gonzalez families had all intervened in Piper's case, leading to this harsh outcome.
Brenda had a complicated relationship with Raymond. Despite his impressive family background, successful career, and attractive looks and demeanor—all qualities she admired—Raymond was infatuated with Elizabeth and constantly targeted Brenda. Reluctantly, she had to give up on him.
She didn't dare go to her uncle's house either. When she was in the detention center, her uncle and aunt visited her, not to offer support but to scold her. They blamed her for ruining their family and even demanded money to pay off their debts. Brenda, who barely had enough money to hire a lawyer for herself, couldn't help them. After she explained her situation, they berated her even more harshly. If it weren't for the detention center's security, she suspected her aunt would have physically attacked her. It was best to avoid them entirely.
After considering her options, she thought of Loren. He was the only one who might still care about her. So, Brenda called Loren.
At that moment, Loren was in his office, discussing with Richard the possibility of transferring him to another branch of the Clark Group. Seeing Brenda's call, he wasn't surprised and answered, "What's up?"
Brenda said sweetly, "Loren, I'm out, but I have nowhere to go. I gave all my money to Mom. I don't know what to do. Can you let me stay with you for a few days? I'll leave as soon as I find a job."
Finding a job was out of the question for Brenda. As an adopted daughter of a wealthy family and a former popular star, she found the idea of low-paying jobs and the risk of being recognized embarrassing.
Loren hesitated. "It's not that I don't want to help, but if Mom finds out, we'll both be in trouble. How about I give you some money for a hotel? You have a good relationship with Elise; maybe you could ask her if you can stay with her for a few days. She was a big help in getting you out this time."
Richard, who was looking at his phone, glanced up at Loren upon hearing this. Loren met his gaze, his eyes showing little emotion.
On the other end, Brenda felt uncomfortable but knew she couldn't refuse. She agreed, "Alright, I'll stay at a hotel then. Loren, the money you send me will be a loan. I'll pay you back when I have money."
Paying him back was unlikely, but she had to say it to appear independent and not clingy.
Loren smiled faintly. "It's just a small amount, don't worry about it. I have a meeting coming up, but reach out if you need anything."
Brenda replied, "Okay, I won't bother you then."
Shortly after hanging up, she received a text notification that her account had an extra $100,000.
'Loren is too stingy. What can $100,000 do?' she thought. But it did take care of her immediate needs and showed he still cared about her. Otherwise, he wouldn't have helped her behind Betty's back.
Since she couldn't get Raymond, Brenda decided to set her sights on Loren. Although Loren wasn't as handsome as Raymond, he was elegant and would be the future heir of the Clark Family. If she could marry him, she would still be a wealthy lady, living a carefree life and spending money as she pleased. He could also help her pay off the huge breach of contract fees she owed. And it would annoy Betty, which was a bonus.
Brenda didn't head straight to the hotel; instead, she called Elise. The $100,000 wouldn't last forever, and she feared harassment from her uncle's family. While staying at a hotel wasn't safe, Elise could help shield her, easing her concerns.
Brenda told Elise about Loren sending her money to stay at a nice hotel, hoping Elise would offer her a place to stay. After all, Elise had been into Loren for a long time. Of course, Brenda had no intention of helping Elise pursue Loren; he was her target now.
Sure enough, Elise offered to help Brenda find a place to stay. Elise saw this as an opportunity to get closer to Loren. Both had different intentions but shared the same goal: Loren.
In the CEO's office at Clark Entertainment, after Loren hung up the phone, Richard immediately knew that the call was from Brenda. Today was, after all, the day Brenda was released. Raising an eyebrow, he asked, "Was Brenda avoiding jail your doing? Aren't you worried that Mom will find out and make a scene?"
Loren shrugged. "I didn't do anything."
Richard sneered, "Cut the crap, we all know what's up. Don't forget, Brenda is the most hated person in our family right now, especially with Mom."
Loren sighed. "Look, after this money transfer, I'm done helping her. Consider it paying back for old times' sake."
Richard raised an eyebrow. "Loren, aren't you worried about stirring up trouble?"
Loren raised an eyebrow back. "What trouble?"
Richard said meaningfully, "Brenda's banking on you. Do you really think she'll let you off the hook if you stop helping her? Once you give her an inch, she'll take a mile. And Elise? She's notoriously arrogant and difficult. Dealing with both of them will be a nightmare."
Loren laughed. "You're overthinking it. I'm just helping Brenda this once. If she keeps bothering me, I won't pay her any mind."
He emphasized pointedly, "I don't want Mom and Dad to know about this."
Richard pouted. "I'm not going to them."
He crossed his arms and smirked. "If you don't take my advice, I'll just sit back and watch the fireworks."
From what he knew of Brenda, she would likely target Loren and pester him in another way. And Elise wasn't a saint either. Loren was underestimating these women. Those two weren't easy to deal with and would definitely stir up trouble. But he wasn't going to remind Loren of this anymore. All four brothers and Betty had experienced Brenda's "care," and now it was Loren's turn. After all, he had warned him, and it was Loren who didn't listen. And who told Loren to mess with Brenda? If trouble arose, it would be his own doing.
Loren didn't take Richard's words to heart. He smiled confidently. "You might be disappointed; nothing's gonna happen."
Richard smirked. "We'll see."
