Chapter 51 Wouldn't It Be More Interesting?
The cameraman had his orders from Arthur. Even after Elizabeth stepped out, the camera stayed locked on Raymond and the others, ignoring her. As Elizabeth approached, Arthur leaned in and whispered, "Are you Kevin's cousin?"
Elizabeth quickly figured out that Richard must've hired people online to spread rumors. She shook her head. "No."
Arthur got the hint that someone was out to smear Elizabeth's name. He filled her in on the headlines and warned, "If these rumors stick, it's not gonna be good for you. You should think of a way to handle it. After the show wraps up tomorrow, you can deal with it."
He added, "If you need help, I can get someone to take down the headlines."
Seeing the concern in Arthur's eyes, Elizabeth felt a warm glow inside. Not everyone treated her like the Clark family or Eugene. She gave a small smile and said, "Thanks, Arthur, but there's no need to take down the headlines. Let them talk; the bigger the fuss, the better."
She hadn't addressed it during the live stream and even let Brenda change the subject successfully. She already guessed Richard wouldn't just sit back; he'd definitely stir up trouble by hiring people to create buzz. Otherwise, the show's popularity wouldn't cut it. Making headlines for a few days, causing a huge uproar, and letting everyone know—when the truth finally came out, wouldn't it be more interesting?
Arthur realized his worry was unnecessary. He chuckled. "So you did it on purpose before."
Since Elizabeth wanted to let things escalate, he decided to stay out of it for now. He then asked quietly, "Can you at least tell me your relationship with Kevin? So I can be prepared for the next episode. Don't worry, I won't spill the beans until you're ready."
Arthur had been dying to know the real deal between Elizabeth and Kevin. Elizabeth didn't hold back. "We're biological siblings."
Arthur's eyes went wide. "Biological siblings? So, you and Brenda are sisters too?"
Elizabeth shook her head. "No, Brenda's adopted. I'm the biological daughter. But my old family always favored her and pushed me aside."
Arthur was floored. "Your family preferred an adopted daughter over their own flesh and blood? And what do you mean by 'old family'? Sounds like there's more to this."
Elizabeth didn't sugarcoat it. She gave him the rundown. "When I was a kid, Kevin lost me. Before coming on the show, I cut ties with the Clark family."
Arthur took a second to let that sink in and almost blurted out a curse. "Kevin really messed up."
No wonder Elizabeth, usually so chill, had such a beef with Kevin. He lost his own sister, and when she came back, he still favored the adopted one? What kind of twisted logic is that? Didn't he feel any guilt or want to make things right?
Arthur nodded. "You did the right thing cutting ties." The Clark family was messed up too. After finding Elizabeth, they still put Brenda on a pedestal. What were they thinking?
Elizabeth felt a sense of relief seeing Arthur's reaction. Any normal person would be as baffled as he was. She had been confused too, not understanding why her family treated her that way. But when the truth came out, Kevin and Brenda would have to face the music.
Elizabeth smiled coolly. "Since they don't want to play nice, they can't blame me for being harsh later."
She was giving Arthur a heads-up, signaling that she wouldn't let things slide. Once this episode wrapped up, it would be her turn to stir the pot.
Arthur nodded in agreement. "You have to fight back. If you keep taking it without pushing back, they'll just get worse."
He added, "If you need any help, just let me know."
Elizabeth thought for a moment and then said quietly, "If you want the next episode to be even more popular, focus the camera more on Kevin and Brenda's interactions."
Today, Brenda was rattled by what Elizabeth had said and would definitely seek comfort from Kevin later. Arthur got it right away. He had noticed the frequent physical contact between Kevin and Brenda before but hadn't thought much of it since they were supposed to be siblings. Now, knowing they weren't biological siblings, their closeness seemed off.
If they captured footage of the two hugging or being overly intimate, it would be hard for people not to speculate once their true relationship was revealed. More people would watch the live replay and be curious about the next episode, causing the show's popularity to skyrocket. Of course, Kevin and Brenda would be the first to be criticized and make headlines.
Arthur realized Elizabeth was quite shrewd, but he liked it. After all, she was currently being vilified due to the twisted narrative, with "heartless" becoming her nickname, and she was being slammed in the headlines.
Arthur gave Elizabeth a thumbs-up. "You can always count on me." He had always been grateful to Elizabeth for saving his wife. Besides gratitude, Elizabeth's impressive divination and various abilities made her a valuable ally.
Elizabeth nodded. "Alright!"
They soon parted ways, and Elizabeth walked to the courtyard gate to join the others. As she approached, the child being held by Jimmy reached out to her. "Pretty, hold me."
Jimmy was speechless. This ungrateful little rascal was ready to abandon his dad at the sight of a pretty lady. He sternly told his son, "The pretty lady is a girl. You're too heavy; it's tiring for her to hold you all the time."
The child looked at Elizabeth and said, "No more holding." He then extended his hand. "Hold hands."
Elizabeth, who was quite fond of the child, reached out and held his little hand. "Alright, let's hold hands."
Her gentle and loving demeanor towards the child made her fans cheer even more. Jimmy's wife had gone to town in the afternoon to buy groceries and had prepared a table full of dishes. To thank Elizabeth, Jimmy's mother had also cooked several of her specialty dishes. The whole family was very warm and welcoming to Elizabeth and the others.
Elizabeth said, "I've already hung the rune I drew around his neck. Once the curse on him is lifted, the rune can still be used."
Seeing the rune hanging around the child's neck, the family felt inexplicably reassured. "Thank you, thank you so much, Elizabeth."
Jimmy raised his glass and stood up. "I toast to you. I'll drink wine, and you can have a soft drink."
Elizabeth picked up a paper cup. "No need to be so formal."
They chatted and ate, unaware that a divination master who had watched Elizabeth practice boxing fitness had posted a video of her drawing runes in a divination group, causing a sensation.
