Chapter 97 Belated Affection Is Useless

Eugene was stunned when Amy called him pathetic.

He started laughing uncontrollably, his eyes turning red.

Amy had never seen him like this.

"Eugene, are you listening? I don't like Elizabeth. You two broke up, so cut her off completely. Don't think about her anymore," she said sternly.

"Brenda is better—gentle and kind. She's my ideal daughter-in-law. Go after Brenda and marry her," she added earnestly. "I won't steer you wrong."

Eugene stood up, still laughing. "I lost the girl I liked because I listened to you too much. You told me to be nice to Brenda, to take care of her, and I did. You didn't like Elizabeth, so I kept her away from you and avoided going out with her. What more do you want?"

He kicked the bottles on the floor, sending them flying. "You ruined my relationship and now you want me to marry someone I don't love. I'm your son, not a dog that just obeys. I used to do everything you wanted."

With a pained expression, he said, "But I can't let go Elizabeth."

Just thinking about losing Elizabeth, whom he had cherished since childhood, made his heart ache.

He had been good to Brenda, agreed to help Richard take Elizabeth's spot on the show, and even went public with their relationship, because of one hidden motive: he wanted Elizabeth to leave the entertainment industry and stay by his side.

He hated seeing her in romantic scenes with other men.

He wanted her all to himself.

If Elizabeth was forced out of the industry, he could marry her secretly.

He had once suggested she leave the industry, but she refused.

So he had treated her coldly, hoping she'd realize that her career was taking her away from him.

He even had stopped contacting her, hoping she'd see who was more important.

But before he could achieve his goal, everything changed.

Elizabeth had broken up with him because of Brenda and stopped seeing him.

This time, he felt it—she really didn't want him anymore.

He couldn't accept it.

He was already in pain, and Amy's words made it worse.

If it weren't for her insisting he take care of Brenda, he wouldn't have had so many private interactions with her.

Amy's eyes widened in disbelief. "You blame me?"

Her eyes reddened. "For that Elizabeth, you yelled at me? Eugene, I'm your mother. Aren't I more important than Elizabeth?"

She looked hurt. "Today, you have to choose between me and Elizabeth."

She couldn't believe Elizabeth could mean more to Eugene than she did.

Eugene stopped laughing, looking exhausted. "Mom, please stop causing me trouble."

Amy was furious. "How am I causing trouble?"

She clutched her chest. "Give me a definite answer today. Do you want me or Elizabeth?"

Eugene looked even more exhausted, on the verge of breaking down. "Stop forcing me, please."

Amy said, "How is this forcing? I just want you to choose."

Eugene suddenly asked, "Then between me and Percy, who would you choose?"

Amy froze. She wanted to say, how could you compare to Percy?

But she knew she couldn't say that out loud, couldn't risk pushing Eugene away.

So she said, "You and Percy are both very important to me. I can't give up either of you."

Eugene replied, "Then you and Elizabeth are both very important to me too. I can't give up either of you."

Amy froze, her face livid. "Don't compare me to that Elizabeth."

Eugene frowned. "She's not a bad person."

Amy sneered, "She has you so bewitched, and she's not a bad person? Then what is she?"

Just then, Rebecca's voice came from the doorway.

"Does that mean you're a bad person for bewitching my dad?"

Rebecca had come back to grab some documents from her room. Hearing the argument, she decided to listen in.

She didn't want to get involved but couldn't stand Amy badmouthing Elizabeth.

Amy turned, eyes blazing. "You beast, is that how you talk to your mother?"

Rebecca smirked, "If I'm a beast, then what are you? An old beast?"

Amy was always biased and used Eugene. Rebecca found it disgusting.

Amy was so angry she almost fell over. "You, you! Do you believe I'll have your dad kick you out of the family?"

Rebecca laughed. "Of course I believe it, since my dad is your lapdog."

Orlando was powerful and shrewd in the Baker company and family, but he lost all reason with Amy, especially since Amy was always cold to him, which only made him like her more.

Thinking about it, Rebecca felt disgusted with her past self for chasing after Hubert. Luckily, she had woken up.

Amy, holding back her anger, quickly walked up to Rebecca and raised her hand to hit her.

But Rebecca grabbed her wrist. "Amy, I'm not my dad or my brother. I won't go along with you. If you dare to hit me, I'll go to Janet."

Since Gary passed away, Janet had changed drastically and become very protective of Rebecca and her brother.

Hearing this, Amy's face changed, filled with dark hatred. She was afraid of Janet and that Rebecca would really go to her.

So she bluffed. "Rebecca, just you wait."

Then she stomped off in her high heels, fuming.

Rebecca chuckled. "Mrs. Amy Baker can be scared too."

Eugene looked over. "No matter what, she's still our mother. Don't speak so harshly."

Rebecca rolled her eyes. "You're hopeless."

She turned to leave, but Eugene called out, "Rebecca, help me with something."

Rebecca stopped. "If you want me to help persuade Elizabeth, don't even ask."

Eugene was stunned, not expecting her refusal.

He thought for a moment and said, "If Hubert came back to you, what would you do? You can understand me, right?"

Rebecca was also stunned, not expecting that.

She laughed mockingly. "I'd tell him that belated affection is useless. I don't care anymore. By the way, Elizabeth will agree with me."

She even suggested, "Eugene, go see a therapist. You've been too influenced by Amy."

With that, she returned to her room, grabbed her things, and left the Baker residence.

Amy, who had called Orlando to come back and deal with Rebecca, didn't get her way.

She ended up making herself even angrier.
