Chapter 266 You Can't Run Away

Richard's words hit Eugene like a ton of bricks. He went quiet and knocked back a few more drinks.

Hubert chimed in, "Eugene used to play Elizabeth like a fiddle. He thought she'd always be there, no matter how much he messed up. He figured she'd never leave him, so he kept acting like a jerk."

He sighed, "Who knew Elizabeth had a breaking point? She straight-up told him she didn't love him anymore and bounced. Eugene was floored. By the time he realized he messed up, it was game over."

With every word Hubert said, Eugene's face got paler.

Richard nodded. "Yep, that's the story. I used to think Elizabeth was like our sister, and family ties were unbreakable. She was always so good to us, so I thought she'd never hold a grudge. But man, was I wrong. We pushed her away, and she never came back. We were pretty awful too."

The Clark brothers had been just like Eugene, taking Elizabeth's kindness for granted and treating her like crap. By the time they realized their mistake, it was too late.

Eugene took a deep breath and muttered, "Yeah, I was too full of myself."

He always thought Elizabeth, who grew up leaning on him, would wait for him like she did when they were kids. But this time, he lost her for good. She wasn't waiting for him anymore.

Eugene looked at Hubert and snapped, "You're so good at analyzing me. What about Rebecca? Think she'll come back to you? Didn't you also take her love for granted and hurt her?"

Hubert's smile vanished. He said, "Yeah, I'm no saint either. We were all so self-righteous, and now we're all in the same sinking ship."

He had thought Rebecca cared so much about him that she'd never leave. Now, he regretted it, but it was too late. He couldn't move on, and it was killing him.

Hubert suddenly blurted, "Have I been hanging out with you guys too much? Is that why I turned out like this?"

Otherwise, why was he so crappy to Rebecca before? He thought he was doing it for her good, but he was just hurting her.

Richard and Eugene both yelled, "Get lost!"

Richard rolled his eyes at Hubert. "You've always been the worst of us, and you've got the nerve to say we corrupted you. I think it was you who corrupted us."

Eugene added, "Yeah, you're the sneakiest and the worst. And you dare to badmouth us. If there was a contest for shamelessness, you'd win hands down."

He picked up the bottle and filled their glasses. He sighed deeply, "But seriously, we're in a tough spot, all dumped. It's our own fault for not knowing how to cherish what we had. Come on, let's drink."

Eugene downed his glass in one go and kept drinking. Ever since his fallout with Elizabeth, he'd been drowning his sorrows in booze.

Hubert and Richard, feeling just as crappy, followed suit and drank one glass after another.

The three of them drank until midnight, and then their assistants had to drag them away, all wasted.

Richard was having a rough night. As he was going down the stairs, he suddenly slipped and fell. His assistant saw him bleeding from the head and freaked out. He rushed Richard to the hospital.

But halfway there, the car broke down.

They couldn't get a taxi, and there were no cars to flag down on the road.

In the end, they had to call 911 to get Richard to the hospital.

After the fall, Richard sobered up a bit.

Once they got to the hospital, got his wound treated, and got an IV to sober up, he was fully awake. He realized his head was cut and had a few stitches, and one of his hands was broken.

Richard was fuming and decided to call Enrique.

No answer. He tried a video call. Still nothing.

He figured Enrique was too chicken to pick up.

Richard had his assistant snap some pics of his banged-up self, planning to use them to settle the score with Enrique later.

Still pissed, he opened a group chat with Arnold and Kevin. He started a group video call on purpose.

The other two, who were dead asleep, got woken up. They checked the time—5 AM—and wondered what the hell Richard was up to.

Eventually, they both answered the call. And then they saw Richard looking like he'd been through a meat grinder. Their sleepiness vanished in an instant.

Arnold couldn't help but ask, "Richard, what the hell happened to you?"

Richard, gritting his teeth, said, "Isn't it your fault? Why'd you have to tell Enrique I could get Elizabeth to draw a Spellscroll? He came to me, and when Elizabeth wouldn't help him, he stole my Spellscroll."

Arnold exclaimed, "He stole your Spellscroll, and you ended up like this?"

Richard said, "Duh, isn't it obvious? Elizabeth said that because the Spellscroll had my aura, when Enrique took it and kept it on him, I ended up taking the hit for him."

Then he recounted how he fell down the stairs and ended up in this sorry state.

Arnold and Kevin were both freaked out. Especially Arnold, since Enrique was still crashing at his place.

He asked, uneasy, "If Enrique steals our Spellscrolls, will we have to take the hit for him too?"

Richard raised an eyebrow. "Yeah! We're brothers. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother warning you."

Richard had a hunch that Arnold and Kevin wouldn't escape this mess either.

Enrique had been a troublemaker since they were kids. After benefiting from Richard's Spellscroll, there was no way he'd spare Arnold and Kevin.

So even though Richard was warning them, he was actually looking forward to their misfortune.

After all, it was Arnold who had egged Enrique on to come to him. By warning them, they'd become more protective of their Spellscrolls, which would only make Enrique more determined to steal them.

Arnold was speechless. He muttered, "I didn't expect it to be like this."

Kevin complained, "I really don't want to be in the next season of the show."

One Brenda was enough, and now he had to watch out for Enrique too.

Richard sneered, "You were so confident about getting Brenda a spot on the show, and now you want to back out? No way."

Arnold added, "Exactly, Kevin, you can't run away. Just give up." If Kevin bailed, Brenda and Enrique would probably come after him.

Kevin fell silent. With brothers like these, he was really unlucky.

The three of them chatted for a while longer before ending the call.

But Arnold and Kevin couldn't sleep anymore.

The next morning, Kevin got up, had breakfast, and got a call from Arthur.

Arthur said the original time and place had to be changed due to some issues.

The event was postponed for half a month and moved to Seraphim Heights.

Hearing this news, Kevin felt a chill run down his spine.

The time and place were really changed. The people behind Brenda were not to be messed with.

So Kevin tentatively asked if he could withdraw from the next season of the show, even if it meant paying a penalty.

But Arthur shot him down, saying that unless Kevin was bedridden, he had to participate.

After all, Kevin had agreed to participate in all the seasons to bring Brenda along. He couldn't back out now.

Kevin had no choice but to agree to continue participating in the next season.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth and the others also received a call from Arthur regarding the job changes.

At noon, Richard left the hospital. He had his assistant take him straight to Elizabeth's apartment.
