Chapter 123 What a Waste

Alfonso getting hired as the Clark Group's divination master said a lot about his skills.

But now, he wasn't so sure.

He grabbed the black ash and sniffed it.

Nothing seemed off. So why did the talisman paper burn up?

He looked at the four and asked, "Still in pain?"

Richard clutched his chest. "It hurts even more now."

Alfonso wasn't helping; he was making things worse.

Hubert added, "The pain's doubled, and now there's a burning sensation."

Elizabeth must've done something to them, and Alfonso's attempts only made it worse.

Brenda and Angela started crying. "It hurts so much."

Alfonso was puzzled. 'How could this be?'

The talisman paper turning to black ash should've meant it worked.

Why was the pain worse?

The key issue was he didn't sense any evil aura on them.

He thought for a moment and said, "You must be cursed. My talisman was countered. The person who did this is very powerful."

He added, "I need more time to prepare to help you."

If he couldn't fix this, his reputation would take a hit.

Richard asked, "How long?"

He was starting to doubt Alfonso.

Alfonso said, "About an hour. I'll call for help."

He couldn't figure out their situation, so he planned to ask a friend.

Richard freaked out. "An hour?"

Alfonso sighed. "This witchcraft is rare. I need more time."

Richard panted. "Mr. Romero, can you at least ease the pain?"

The pain was unbearable now.

Alfonso wanted to say he wasn't a doctor, but he held back.

He had to keep his job with the Clark Group.

He thought for a moment and handed Richard a string of beads.

"Hold this tightly."

It was a divination tool from his teacher, supposed to have a suppressive effect.

Richard grabbed it and held on tight.

After a moment, the pain eased a bit.

He nodded. "This helps."

The pain was still there but less intense.

Alfonso sighed in relief and put on a mysterious face. "Of course it works."

Hubert saw this and asked, "Mr. Romero, can you help us too?"

Alfonso stiffened; he didn't have more tools.

He thought of Hubert's status and handed him a pendant. "Try this."

Then he told Brenda and Angela, "I only brought two tools, so you'll have to bear with it."

Brenda and Angela were silent, wanting to curse.

Especially Brenda, thinking Alfonso was supposed to solve the problem.

But now, he seemed unreliable.

She cried from the pain, as he only helped Richard and Hubert.

She kept crying, "But Mr. Romero, I can't take it anymore."

Alfonso spread his hands helplessly. "I only have two tools, nothing I can do."

He suggested, "Why don't you take turns using them?"

Brenda could tell he was being honest.

She looked at Richard with a pitiful expression. "Richard."

Richard didn't want to give up the beads.

He thought for a moment. "Let me rest a bit, then I'll give them to you."

How long he'd rest was up to him.

Brenda hadn't expected Richard to ignore her pain.

He had promised to always protect her, but now he was a liar.

Already in pain, she felt even more hurt and started crying harder.

She didn't dare get too close to her brothers in front of Paul, so she tugged at Enrique's clothes.

Enrique felt heartbroken seeing her like this.

He poked Arnold, who was sitting next to him.

They exchanged a glance and nodded.

Richard was sitting next to Arnold.

Arnold suddenly hugged Richard.

Enrique quickly stood up and snatched the beads from Richard's hand.

He handed them to Brenda.

He looked at Richard disapprovingly. "Richard, how can you be so mean? Brenda's our sister; she should have them."

Arnold added, "Yeah, Richard, what kind of brother are you? Always bullying Brenda, it's outrageous."

As soon as the beads were taken, the pain hit Richard hard.

Hearing their words, Richard was too pained to move.

Otherwise, he would've beaten them up.

He glared at them. "Just you wait."

Brenda, holding the beads, felt the pain lessen. She hid behind Enrique, determined not to give them back.

Enrique stood protectively in front of Brenda. "Richard, don't take it out on us. Go find whoever hit you."

Arnold added, "Yeah, we and Brenda won't be your punching bags. If you're a man, go find the person who hit you."

They were saying so to provoke Richard to confront Elizabeth.

Richard was silent.

They weren't his brothers; they were his enemies.

They were targeting him for Brenda.

They were crazy.

The stronger the pain, the clearer his mind became.

He couldn't help but think, had Elizabeth felt the same way when she returned to the Clark family?

His gaze fell on Brenda, hiding behind Enrique, and his eyes grew colder.

From childhood, he had always pampered Brenda, giving her whatever she wanted.

When she said Elizabeth had bullied her and tried to take her things, they even believed her.

For her, he had always targeted Elizabeth, his own sister.

He even had hired online trolls to curse Elizabeth for her.

Now she was acting pitiful, making Arnold and Enrique snatch the beads from him.

At this moment, Richard felt all his kindness to Brenda over the years was wasted.

He resisted the urge to snatch back the beads, closed his eyes, and endured the pain.

Besides being angry at Brenda, he was also angry at Elizabeth.

Elizabeth was ruthless; beating them wasn't enough, she had to harm them like this.

Did she have such a big grudge against him?

Angela saw Brenda's brothers kindly snatch the beads for her and felt envious.

She looked at Hubert with hopeful eyes, exuding a pitiful weakness.

Hubert, holding the pendant, noticed Angela's gaze.

But he didn't give her the pendant; instead, he closed his eyes like Richard, pretending to rest.

He disliked women who pretended to be weak; there was no way he'd give her the pendant.

If it were Rebecca, maybe he would, though.
