Chapter 201 The Problem Lay with Eugene
Percy was currently at the office handling some paperwork. He felt a bit puzzled when he saw the incoming call.
Still, he quickly answered. "Mom!"
Amy's tone was much gentler toward Percy, "Percy, are you busy right now?"
Percy replied, "Not too much. Just handling some paperwork. Mom, what's up?"
Amy then tearfully complained to Percy about how Eugene had stood up to her for Elizabeth.
However, she knew Percy and Eugene didn't get along well, so she didn't ask Percy to deal with him.
Percy was shocked upon hearing this. It seemed that after being dumped by Elizabeth, Eugene not only improved but also became much clearer-headed. He finally realized how hollow Amy's love was.
He could only agree with Amy. "Eugene is indeed out of line. When Dad gets back, you can have him talk to Eugene properly."
As for persuading Amy to be nicer to Eugene, it was useless; Percy had tried before. Amy's dominating and controlling nature proved to be too strong, as she had a tendency to treat them as possessions and desired complete control over every aspect of their lives.
Amy's strong disapproval of Elizabeth primarily stemmed from her frustration over Eugene's attention being directed toward Elizabeth. Amy's fear of Elizabeth was rooted in her belief that Elizabeth could potentially replace her in Eugene's affections. She resented the idea of having a daughter-in-law who would not be submissive to her control and authority. That was why she kept trying to break them up.
Though Amy pampered Percy superficially, she interfered whenever his romantic interests didn't meet her approval—a major reason he hadn't had a girlfriend. He didn't feel safe, fearing Amy would sabotage his relationships. This dynamic was ludicrous but all too real.
Rebecca, sharp and perceptive, had seen through this long ago. Not only did she not expect motherly love, but she also disliked Amy.
Since Amy didn't care much about Rebecca, she managed to escape.
Now, Eugene had broken free, too, except he remained ensnared in the toxic cycle.
Amy, hearing Percy's words, thought Percy understood her. She began, "Percy, I called you because I need you to do something for me."
Percy couldn't guess what she wanted and replied, "Go ahead."
It definitely couldn't be to deal with Eugene.
Amy said, "Brenda is injured and hospitalized in Veridiania, and she's all alone and pitiful. Can you take a day off today and fly to Veridiania to take care of her?"
Percy, startled by the request, never imagined Amy would throw someone like Brenda under his care.
He politely declined, "Mom, I have a very important meeting tomorrow. I can't leave."
He didn't want to get involved with Brenda and end up as unlucky as Eugene and the Clark brothers.
Amy frowned. "Can't someone else attend the meeting? Brenda is alone abroad, and I'm worried."
As Brenda's biological brother, Percy should take care of her and strengthen their relationship.
Percy, growing more exasperated, countered, "Mom, Brenda has other relatives; it's not my place to take care of her. The Clark family is still there. If I go, it could create misunderstandings, especially with the media. She recently made headlines with rumors about Eugene. I don't want to add to that."
He knew how to handle Amy effectively. Sure enough, Amy had to give up the idea after hearing this.
Percy and Brenda were biological siblings; it wouldn't be good if rumors spread about their relationship.
She thought momentarily and said, "Alright, I'll talk to Mrs. Clark and have her go take care of Brenda then."
Percy, internally rolling his eyes, knew Amy's call would only strain Betty and Brenda's relationship further. Deciding not to interfere, he agreed, "Indeed, the Clark Family should take care of her. Mrs. Clark has a good relationship with you; if you call her, she'll definitely listen. Brenda will also be grateful to you."
With Percy's approval, Amy smiled, "Alright, I'll do that."
After hanging up, she really contacted Betty. And she mentioned Brenda calling her. She said Brenda was injured, alone in the hospital, and pitiful. She also badmouthed Elizabeth, implying that Elizabeth caused Brenda's situation.
Hearing Amy's words, Betty didn't know how to respond. If it were before, she might have believed it.
However, Betty, well versed in the true events—Brenda's hostile behavior and its consequences—was already disillusioned. She'd seen the live footage, heard her family's reprimands, and was increasingly irritated by Brenda's deceit.
She began to suspect that Brenda's previous obedience was just an act.
What disgusted her even more was that she was Brenda's adoptive mother, raising her all these years. She treated Brenda more like a biological daughter. For Brenda, she even severed ties with Elizabeth.
However, when Brenda had an issue, she first thought of calling Amy.
Now, Amy even called her to take care of Brenda. What did she think of her as a mother? It made her feel embarrassed and uncomfortable.
Betty agreed on the surface, but her face turned ugly after hanging up.
However, she didn't want Brenda to do more bad things or let outsiders gossip.
So she called her assistant and had them fly to Veridiania to take care of Brenda. If possible, bring Brenda back.
On the other side, Brenda was still waiting for news at the hospital. Suddenly, she shivered as if she had lost something.
She realized her Generational Blessings had weakened significantly. She was puzzled. What was going on?
Then she saw her hand and couldn't help but exclaim, "Ah, how could this happen?" There were spots on the back of her hand.
This was Samuel's mention of the Generational Blessings backlash.
Then her phone rang. Seeing it was Amy, she suppressed her anxiety and answered, "Hello, Mrs. Baker!"
Amy gently said, "Brenda, I contacted Eugene. But he has to continue with the live variety show and can't come to take care of you."
She added thoughtfully, "So I called your mom, and she said she would send someone to take care of you."
Internally cursing Amy's interference but outwardly polite, Brenda replied, "Thank you so much, Mrs. Baker."
Then she tentatively asked, "Mrs. Baker, is Eugene unhappy?"
Amy got angry at this. "He's so rebellious now, not even listening to me, his mother! It just makes me furious."
Brenda grasped the situation. Of course, the problem lay with Eugene. That's why her Generational Blessings had weakened significantly again.
