Chapter 64 Does She Really Not Care About the Past at All?
The internet was buzzing about Eugene and Elizabeth's relationship. Hadd Elizabeth really questionrf Eugene in that recording and break up for legit reasons? Or was Eugene's side of the story true?
In the car, Kevin and Brenda were following the headlines. Brenda saw nasty comments about her on the variety show’s live stream and felt really upset. Kevin was her brother, so why was it wrong for him to be nice to her? Elizabeth was the one trying to take her brother and her stuff, yet people were bashing her.
Brenda liked Eugene and wanted him to like her back, so she often found excuses to hang out with him. Eugene helped her because she was charming, not because she was shameless like people were saying. It was Elizabeth who couldn't keep Eugene.
The more Brenda read, the angrier she got. Then she saw Eugene's latest post, which made her even more upset. She had felt proud, thinking she was Eugene's first love, but why did he deny it so quickly? Even though she knew it was better for their reputations, it still hurt.
She started crying, but Kevin, busy on his phone, didn't notice. Feeling even more upset, she cried louder. Kevin finally noticed and asked, "Brenda, what's wrong?"
Brenda threw herself into his arms. "People online are insulting me. I'm so sad. What did I ever do to Elizabeth? Why does she have to harm me on purpose?"
She cried harder, saying she always wanted to be friends with Elizabeth and was willing to give her everything, but Elizabeth couldn't tolerate her. She was clearly badmouthing Elizabeth to Kevin and Eugene.
Kevin thought Elizabeth had gone too far, harming both Eugene and Brenda. Richard had asked Eugene to look after Brenda, so how did it turn into Brenda interfering in their relationship? Elizabeth was just being unreasonable.
He comforted Brenda, "Don't feel bad. If she doesn't want to be friends with you, then forget it."
Elizabeth was becoming more harsh and heartless toward him too, which made him feel bitter.
He continued, "Richard will clear things up online. Eugene also posted to clarify. Once everyone knows you and Eugene are innocent, they won't insult you anymore."
Brenda pouted, "You're just trying to comfort me. I want to call Richard."
She then called Richard, crying, making him feel sorry for her and promising to handle the online situation.
Brenda's main goal was to get Richard to deal with the online insults. With Richard's ruthless ways, he would definitely find a way to shift the blame back onto Elizabeth.
After hanging up, Brenda still felt upset and buried herself in Kevin's arms, crying a bit longer. She finally looked up, embarrassed. "I just feel so wronged. I really don't mean to blame Elizabeth. Maybe she misunderstood me and Eugene."
She glanced at Eugene in the front seat. With an apologetic face, she said, "Eugene, I'm sorry Elizabeth took her anger out on you because of me. It's my fault. When we get to the airport, I'll explain to her that there's nothing between us."
In her heart, she believed Eugene cared about and liked her. As Elizabeth said, she was Eugene's first love and true love. Otherwise, he wouldn't come every time she asked him out alone. He always protected her and never refused any of her requests.
Eugene was feeling very confused and Brenda's constant crying made him even more irritable. He couldn't help but think that Elizabeth's personality was better; she never used tears to solve problems.
Then he heard what Brenda said. He felt a bit nervous and immediately said, "No need, this is between her and me; it has nothing to do with you. I'll handle it. I'm the one who should apologize; I dragged you into this. Don't go looking for her at the airport; I'll explain everything to her."
Knowing Elizabeth's personality, if Brenda went to explain, she might get even angrier and ignore him more.
Brenda felt even more uncomfortable when he said their issues had nothing to do with her. She pretended to be worried and guilty. "Will she stay mad at you? I'm just afraid I affected your relationship."
Eugene shook his head. "No, our arguments and breakup are not because of you. You don't need to feel burdened."
He thought for a moment and suggested, "Why don't you also post a clarification, so people don't misunderstand?"
Brenda had already planned to do that. But she said, "Okay, to prevent Elizabeth and everyone from misunderstanding you, I was planning to do that too.."
Then she took out her phone and posted on Facebook.
[@Brenda: Eugene and I are just friends. He is Richard's childhood friend, so he is like a brother to me. Please don't misunderstand.]
While Brenda was posting, Eugene tried calling Elizabeth again, but he was still blocked. He couldn't help but ask the driver, "Can I borrow your phone?"
He couldn't wait until the airport to find Elizabeth.
"No problem," the driver handed his phone to Eugene.
Eugene had Elizabeth's number memorized. He dialed it directly.
In the car ahead, Elizabeth saw an unfamiliar number calling and answered, "Hello!"
Eugene spoke, "Elizabeth, it's me."
Elizabeth's voice was cold. "What do you want?"
Eugene said, "I've told you before, there's nothing inappropriate between Brenda and me. I can explain why I know her and why I protect her. Can we talk when we get to the airport?"
Elizabeth scoffed, "It's too late. I don't want to hear it anymore. Eugene, you're a college graduate. You should understand what 'break up' means, right? We have no relationship now, so please stop bothering me. And there's no need to meet at the airport. If someone takes a picture, I won't be able to explain it."
"Besides, I have no interest in knowing why you protect Brenda anymore." She added, "We have no relationship from now on. I trust you won't be the type to cling on."
She finished speaking and hung up before Eugene could say anything. For the first time, she found Eugene so annoying. They had broken up; what was there to cling to?
Eugene was about to speak when he heard the busy tone. She actually hung up on him again. Did she really not care about their past at all?
Eugene felt even more confused. He couldn't understand how things had gotten to this point with Elizabeth. He really didn't have any inappropriate feelings for Brenda; why wouldn't she believe him? Why wouldn't she even listen to his explanation?
