Chapter 453 Would They Be So Kind?
Elizabeth eyed her phone suspiciously as Betty's name flashed on the screen. She answered, "What's up?"
Betty's voice came through a bit awkwardly. "Did you take Zephyr to Mr. Murphy to get rid of the poison bug?"
Elizabeth replied, "Yeah, and it's done. If you've got something to say, just spit it out."
There was a pause before Betty spoke again, "Zephyr's situation was my fault. Thank you for your help. I wanted to invite you and Mr. Murphy to dinner at my place tomorrow night."
Elizabeth's eyes showed a hint of sarcasm. She refused. "I didn't help Zephyr because of you, so there's no need for your thanks. Let's skip the dinner." This dinner invitation was definitely arranged by Ethan.
Betty wasn't too surprised by Elizabeth's refusal. After all, Elizabeth wasn't giving her any face these days. She sighed, "I know you don't like me right now, but I'm really happy that Zephyr is free of the poison bug."
Just as she was about to continue, Elizabeth interrupted. "Cut the crap, just get to the point. If it's just about dinner, then I'm hanging up."
"Wait," Betty said quickly. "It's not just about dinner. The evil wizard who targeted us is dead, but his mentor has come to Clifftonshireburg seeking revenge. Mr. Sanders has temporarily contained him and wants to mediate. He wants to meet with you tomorrow."
Elizabeth sneered. "Ethan would be so kind? Isn't he just trying to cause trouble again?" She definitely had to go to the meeting, but she couldn't agree right away, or Ethan would get suspicious.
Betty had a prepared response. She replied, "Mr. Sanders is the president of the Divination Association. An evil wizard from Eldoria causing trouble is his responsibility to handle. This matter doesn't just involve you; it's become an issue between the wizards of two countries. So Mr. Sanders hopes you can temporarily set aside your misunderstandings to resolve this issue. After all, you're now part of a special department, and you need to consider the bigger picture." This was what Ethan had instructed her to say to Elizabeth.
Elizabeth suddenly asked, "So you also believe that Ethan is just doing his job and not trying to set me up?"
"Of course," Betty replied earnestly. "I think you misunderstand Mr. Sanders. Come to dinner and figure things out."
Betty genuinely believed this. Ethan, an old man over a hundred years old, why would he want to set up a young girl like Elizabeth? She couldn't think of anything about Elizabeth that would make Ethan want to scheme against her. She thought Ethan was a pretty good person. Recently, Ethan had completely removed the remaining poison bug toxins from her body. Even though Ethan had been angered by Elizabeth before, because he was the president of the Divination Association, he still wanted to help Elizabeth.
Hearing Elizabeth's silence, Betty added, "If you come and aren't happy, you can leave anytime. Just consider it as dealing with the evil wizard from Eldoria. Don't worry, with Mr. Sanders and Mr. Murphy here, that evil wizard won't dare do anything to you in Clifftonshireburg."
Elizabeth could tell that Betty genuinely believed this. From her tone, it was clear she thought Ethan was a good person. Elizabeth pondered, 'What will Betty's reaction be if she discovers that Ethan is Amy's man, and that her poisoning has been a calculated move by both of them? And how will she feel upon learning that my disappearance and Brenda's adoption into the Clark Family as a foster daughter are all part of Ethan's meticulous schemes?'
As for explaining to Betty now, it was useless. Betty would just think Elizabeth was deliberately opposing her, or that Elizabeth had misunderstood again.
So let the truth emerge on its own. "Fine," Elizabeth said, pretending to weigh her options. "I'll come with Mr. Murphy."
She added with a bit of self-mockery, "After all, I'm now part of a special department, and I have to consider the bigger picture."
Betty was relieved to hear Elizabeth agree. "Great, see you tomorrow then!"
After hanging up, Betty contacted Ethan. She had recorded the call with Elizabeth and sent the recording to Ethan.
Hearing Elizabeth's doubts and sarcasm toward Betty and himself in the recording, Ethan was actually reassured. That was more like it. If Elizabeth had agreed without asking more questions, that would have been suspicious.
Later that night, after Stanley had seen the body, Ethan proactively contacted Stanley, saying he had created an opportunity for Stanley to get revenge and asked if Stanley wanted to try.
Stanley's voice was filled with anger and grief, and he agreed without hesitation. This attitude also reassured Ethan.
What Ethan didn't realize was that Elizabeth had visited a secret location set up by Alaric that night to meet with Stanley and Aaron, plotting their counterattack for the next day.
The following evening, Elizabeth drove Zachary to Betty's villa. Zachary turned to her on the way. "What do you think Ethan's plan is to separate us?"
Elizabeth considered. "He'll either come himself or stage an urgent distraction. Probably the latter."
Zachary nodded. "We'll see."
At Betty's villa, they found her, Brenda, Ethan, and Stanley waiting. Betty greeted them first. "You're here. Please, have a seat."
Elizabeth and Zachary walked over and sat in the chairs opposite Ethan and the others.
Ethan stood up and respectfully said to Zachary, "Hello!"
Zachary nodded slightly in acknowledgment.
Elizabeth, eyes boring into Ethan and Stanley, demanded, "What's the agenda here? Just say it."
Ethan turned to Stanley. "What do you think?"
Stanley, eyes blazing with anger, fixed his gaze on Elizabeth. "You killed my student Aaron. What do you think should happen?"
Elizabeth scoffed. "You're delusional. When did I ever kill Aaron?"
Stanley slapped the table. An evil aura emanated from him toward Elizabeth. He snapped, "The curse on Aaron—your doing! And you have the gall to deny it?"
Before Elizabeth could respond, Zachary intervened, his tone icy. "Speak civilly, or don't blame me for what happens next."
Right then, Zachary's phone rang. He answered, a weak voice on the other end pleading, "Mr. Murphy, help!"
