Chapter 244 Just Humor Me
Enrique had been hit with a streak of bad luck lately. Today was the worst—his bed just collapsed outta nowhere. It made him think of all those warnings from Arnold and Kevin.
Feeling all alone with just the servants and Brenda around, a weird fear crept up on him. So, in a panic, he called up Arnold and Kevin, begging them to come back and hang out.
Arnold and Kevin, just like Richard, had already told the servants to keep an eye on Enrique and Brenda.
When they heard about Enrique's bad luck, they were kinda glad they dodged that bullet and felt a bit sorry for him.
After Enrique's call, they tried to calm him down but hung up real quick when they realized he wanted them to come back. No way were they risking getting messed up by Brenda.
The servants' reports, especially with Enrique's recent freak-outs, made them super uneasy. It felt like some creepy vibe had taken over the whole situation. Staying away seemed like the smartest move.
Enrique felt totally crushed when his brothers just hung up on him. He felt abandoned by those jerks and suddenly wanted to move out too.
In the days that followed, his bad luck just wouldn't quit, even when he stayed home. He choked on water, found bugs in his food, and tripped over nothing. Important deals fell through, and even the lead actor he signed bailed. Enrique felt like he was losing his grip on reality.
One day, while eating, Enrique zoned out and choked on his food. Brenda rushed over, patting his back and saying gently, "Enrique, slow down." her eyes looking guilty.
She knew a chunk of his Generational Blessings were gone, making him super unlucky. She was just glad her own blessings were back up; otherwise, she might be in the same boat.
After catching his breath, Enrique felt like he was about to break down. He couldn't figure out why bad luck was tailing him. He remembered Arnold's warning.
If it happened once or twice, no big deal, but Enrique had been unlucky every single day lately, which was just nuts.
He took a careful sip of water, felt a bit better, and looked at Brenda. "Brenda, you said you wanted to borrow my luck. Did you really take it? Is that why I've been so unlucky?" he asked, feeling suspicious.
Brenda laughed and lied smoothly, "Enrique, what are you talking about? There's no such thing. I was just messing with you, and you took it seriously."
She shrugged as she continued, "If that was real, people would be borrowing luck left and right."
Half-believing but still cautious, Enrique muttered, "Yeah, I guess." But a seed of doubt was planted. He realized that ever since he agreed to give Brenda his Generational Blessings, things had been off.
He said, "I wanna move out and stay with Arnold for a few days."
Brenda, having already gotten his Generational Blessings, didn't care if he stayed or left. She said casually, "Sure! Or you could ask Arnold and Kevin to come back. Otherwise, the house is too cold and lonely."
Brenda's looks and skin were back to normal, but her luck still wasn't as good as before Elizabeth showed up. If she could snag a third of the Generational Blessings from the other two superstar brothers, she'd be golden.
Enrique watched Brenda talk about his brothers like they were her next target. It gave him the creeps. "I talked to them, but they both said they're busy and won't be coming back for now," he said.
Brenda looked a bit bummed. "I see! Well, ask them again after you find Arnold," she said.
Enrique nodded. "Okay!" He doubted Arnold would actually let him crash, but he packed his stuff anyway. As he was lugging his suitcase downstairs, ready to bounce, he overheard Brenda and Loren chatting in the living room. He put his suitcase down and snuck closer to the door.
Brenda was whining about her bad luck, and Enrique's ears perked up as she tried to sweet-talk Loren into lending her some of his luck. Feeling that familiar dread, Enrique paused to eavesdrop.
"Loren, I've been really unlucky lately. Can you lend me some of your luck?" Brenda asked, sounding all hopeful and timid.
Enrique was floored for a second. No wonder it sounded familiar—it was exactly what Brenda had said to him and others before. His heart raced, thinking Loren shouldn't fall for it. He got ready to barge in and stop it.
But Loren shot her down quick. "Why would I share my luck with you? Our fortunes aren't aligned."
Enrique froze, wanting to hear more.
Brenda kept pushing. "Loren, I heard that if you're unlucky, you can borrow some luck from someone who loves you. Then things will get a lot better. I just want some psychological comfort, you know? Maybe I'll really feel luckier."
Brenda had already planned how to convince Loren. It was just too perfect that Loren came back today, and only the two of them were in the living room. She was worried that if she didn't snag Loren's Generational Blessings fast, it would be a hassle if Richard and the others warned Loren about it.
But Loren wasn't buying it. The Clark Group had hired a divination master, and the higher-ups were pretty into that stuff. Naturally, Loren believed in it too. So he was super cautious about this kind of thing.
He smiled, a bit wary. "Brenda, you're being silly. How can you believe in that stuff? If you're feeling unlucky, I'll call Alfonso. Maybe he can help you."
Even though Brenda had done some shady things, Loren had doted on her for years and still had some sibling feelings for her. He'd help if he could.
Brenda went quiet. What good was asking Alfonso? Alfonso was even more unreliable. Last time, after Alfonso helped, her face hurt even more.
Brenda's face fell for a moment, but she quickly pulled it together. "There's no need to ask Alfonso," she said softly.
Then she reached out, hugging Loren's arm, and begged softly, "I just want some psychological comfort. Lending me some of your Generational Blessings won't really affect you. Loren, please."
