Chapter 240 Caught Her Attention
Rex wasn't the only one thinking something was off with the IV; Matthew and Isaac were on the same page.
So, when they saw Rex bouncing back, they didn't rush to get the doc.
Elizabeth chimed in slowly, "The IV meds are cool, but also not cool."
Rex was scratching his head. "What do you mean?"
Elizabeth broke it down, "The meds in the IV are fine, but today, you're just super unlucky. Even if you did a skin test, it would've triggered a sudden, crazy allergic reaction. The kind that can kill you. So, when stuff like this happens, you just gotta blame bad luck."
Rex got the chills hearing that. Who knew bad luck could cause killer allergies? He was puzzled. "Why am I so unlucky?" he asked.
Lately, Rex hadn't pissed anyone off, and there were no secret kids in the family gunning for the inheritance. So, who'd wanna mess with him?
Elizabeth gave Rex a once-over, her eyes landing on the gemstone ring on his thumb.
"Take off that ring and let me see it," she said.
Rex didn't hesitate and handed it over. "Is this thing the problem?" he muttered.
Elizabeth checked it out. Sure enough, there was some bad juju in the ring. "Just wait and see," she said.
She pulled out a Spellscroll pen, gold powder, and yellow paper from her bag and whipped up a spellscroll right there.
Then she put the Spellscroll on the bedside table and placed the ring on top.
Everyone saw a faint black smoke rise from the ring as soon as it touched the Spellscroll. The Spellscroll caught fire instantly.
When it finished burning, the once-clear ring had a weird dark red streak in the middle.
The room reeked.
Isaac turned on the air purifier, and the smell slowly faded.
Elizabeth looked at Rex seriously. "Did you start wearing this thing about two weeks ago? How'd you get it?"
Rex nodded. "Yeah, I started wearing it about two weeks ago." Then he looked at Matthew, who was sitting there, and asked, "Matthew, where'd you get this thing?"
Matthew's usually handsome face was now all gloomy. He replied in a low voice, "I bought it from Hannah's cousin's auction house. Two weeks ago, Hannah said her cousin's auction house got a batch of antiques and asked me to check it out. When I went, her cousin recommended this ring. I saw it was transparent and old, so I bought it. Her cousin said it looked great on the hand, so I wore it that day."
He looked at Rex and sighed deeply, "Who knew? The next day, you saw it and liked it, so I gave it to you. Now, it seems you took the hit for me."
If Rex had died because of this, Matthew would've been wrecked with guilt forever.
Rex, however, felt kinda lucky. He sighed in relief, "It's good I took the hit. If it were you, it would've been a real mess. Raymond doesn't visit you often, so he wouldn't have noticed anything wrong and called Elizabeth to help."
He was genuinely grateful for taking the hit for Matthew.
Matthew felt warm and murmured, "If it were me, I probably wouldn't have made it."
He looked at Elizabeth and asked, "Elizabeth, is this how the ring's supposed to look now?"
Elizabeth nodded. "Yeah, before, it was all hidden with that blood streak and bad vibes." She frowned, "This thing probably came from a tomb. After the person died, someone soaked this ring in their blood. Once the blood got into the ring, it was put back on the tomb's owner. The tomb turned from a place full of karma to a dead zone. A ring like that, nurtured in such a place, is packed with resentment and evil energy."
She looked at Rex and said, "It's also because your family does a lot of good deeds and you had good luck on your side that you survived this long. If it were anyone else, they'd be dead in about a week. Your car accident wouldn't have just hurt you; it would've killed you. The accident used up all your protective good luck, which is why the ring's bad energy hit you so fast, bringing death."
If Raymond hadn't called her today, Rex would be a goner.
In her past life, around this time, Elizabeth was filming for a project set up by Richard.
Later, she heard the president of Starlight Entertainment Group had changed, supposedly due to some accident.
They didn't mention the exact time, and she hadn't paid much attention.
Thinking back now, it must've been today's incident.
If she hadn't come, she wouldn't have known someone caused Rex's early death.
Rex's already pale face turned ghostly white, and he felt sick. He yelled, "Oh my God, I wore this thing for half a month."
Wearing something soaked in blood from a tomb owner made him want to puke and gave him chills. From now on, he'd steer clear of rings.
Rex said to Matthew, "Matthew, this thing was hidden on purpose. The person who brought it out must've known its problem. Whether it was a coincidence or planned, I don't know."
Matthew's face got even darker. He spoke up, "There are no coincidences. That day, I was dragged to the auction; I didn't just decide to go."
Frowning, Rex muttered, "Could it be that Hannah has a problem?"
Hannah had loved Matthew for years, valuing him more than her own life.
Matthew shook his head as he denied, "My wife can't have a problem."
Then he changed the subject. "But her cousin might. She's an expert in antiques, and that day, she was unusually pushy about this ring."
He squinted his eyes and sneered, "Saying it suited me, like it was meant for me to die?"
Rex immediately knew who Matthew was talking about. He exclaimed, "Could she be trying to harm you because of competition? I heard she helped her brother take over several jewelry companies. Didn't she also use her excellent appraisal skills to recently acquire some top-quality gems, stealing the spotlight from your company?"
"As the president of the largest jewelry company in the country, you could be their competitor. If they kill you, Ingram Jewelers would definitely take a hit. The Spellscroll family's jewelry company could then take the top spot," Rex added.
His expression hardened as he analyzed, "If she helps the Spellscroll Group defeat Ingram Jewelers or even take it over, she could solidify her position in the Spellscroll family, making the real daughter they brought back have no status."
It's not that Rex wanted to think badly of Darlene Spellscroll. But someone who could outshine the Spellscroll family's biological daughter couldn't be simple.
Rex had once accidentally seen Darlene's ruthless side, completely different from her usual gentle and generous demeanor.
Originally, Elizabeth was just curious, but Rex's last sentence caught her attention.
