Chapter 21
Robert spotted Raymond and Elizabeth already near the kids. He watched anxiously but held back from jumping in. It was too late for him to help now. All he could do was pray Raymond and Elizabeth would get the kids back safely. He understood why Elizabeth had jumped in right away—she knew the kids were in danger.
Everyone else got it now too. Why had Elizabeth jumped in when the kids seemed fine? Arthur wasn't by the reservoir, but he was watching the live feed. When he saw Elizabeth dive in, he knew something was up. Elizabeth had a knack for predicting things and had other impressive skills. She'd once saved his wife with a charm she gave her. So, he quickly called the head of the medical team he brought along, telling them to be ready.
When Raymond jumped in too, Arthur's heart sank. Why did Raymond go in? If something went wrong, both he and the show were done for.
Luckily, Elizabeth and Raymond reached the kids just in time. Elizabeth grabbed one kid right before the water could sweep them away. Raymond, a bit behind, grabbed the other. With the kids secure, they swam back to shore. Everyone on the shore watched, holding their breath. Following Arthur's orders, his team quickly broke off a long tree branch to help.
Elizabeth, clutching the child, swam toward the shore. Waves crashed over her, and one wrong move could have swept her away. But she was strong and knew how to use her strength wisely. Despite the strong current, she managed to reach the shore. She pushed the child onto the land first and then grabbed the tree branch extended by Arthur's team, ready to pull herself up.
Suddenly, someone shouted, "Raymond!" Elizabeth turned to see Raymond, who had just pushed the other child onto the shore. The current was even stronger now, and before he could grab the branch extended by the crew, a wave swept him away. Without a second thought, Elizabeth let go of the branch and swam toward Raymond.
Seeing Elizabeth abandon her chance to get out and instead swim to save Raymond, most people on the shore thought, ‘Is she crazy?’ Kevin and the others, who had just arrived, saw this too. They had spent the morning looking for a family that needed help harvesting fruit and finally found one. Following them to the orchard, they saw Elizabeth running in a certain direction, followed by Raymond and others. Thinking something had happened, they chased after them. When they arrived, they saw Elizabeth and Raymond rescuing two children from the reservoir. But before they could react, Elizabeth gave up her chance to get out and turned to save Raymond.
"Elizabeth, Elizabeth!" Kevin and Eugene's faces changed, and they instinctively ran toward the shore. Brenda, seeing their intense and anxious reactions, darkened her gaze. She was extremely unhappy. Watching Raymond being swept away and even submerged in the water, Elizabeth dove in after him, disappearing from sight.
She inwardly criticized Elizabeth for being so foolish, risking her life to save someone else. This was a reservoir release, and the current was so turbulent and fierce that they would definitely be swept away. If Elizabeth drowned, that would actually be good. She wouldn't have to worry about Elizabeth stealing her affection and belongings anymore. Elizabeth shouldn't have been alive in the first place; death was her rightful place. However, she didn't show this on her face; instead, she put on a worried expression.
In the water, Elizabeth saw Raymond being swept underwater, so she dove down as well. The visibility underwater was poor, but she still managed to catch sight of Raymond's direction. Using the force of the current, she quickly swam ahead of Raymond and grabbed his arm. The current was strong, and she was also being swept towards the reservoir gate, almost separating her from Raymond. But Elizabeth remained calm, holding her breath. She tightly gripped Raymond's arm, using the current to get closer to him. She then let go of his arm and wrapped her arms around his waist, using all her strength to swim towards the shore.
Raymond, though his eyes were tightly shut, was still conscious. He had thought his impulsive action would lead to his death. The current had carried him farther away, and at a critical moment, he had a leg cramp. Unable to swim up to save himself, he had swallowed a lot of water. He couldn't breathe and felt on the verge of passing out. Just when he thought he might drown, a hand suddenly grabbed his arm. Soon, he felt an arm around his waist, pulling him forward. Was he being rescued? He certainly didn't want to die if he could live.
On the shore and in the live broadcast, everyone watched without daring to blink. The comment section was blank; everyone was too tense to type. Elizabeth's fans and Raymond's fans prayed fervently for their safety. The audience and other fans also hoped the two would survive. Despite their prayers, the current was strong, and the reservoir was dozens of yards high. If they were swept away, the chances of survival were slim. Only a few fans of Kevin, Eugene, and Brenda hoped for something to go wrong.
Just when everyone thought the two might have been swept away, Elizabeth suddenly emerged from the water with Raymond and swam towards the shore. The people on the shore and the live broadcast viewers couldn't help but cheer excitedly. Fans were so moved that they wanted to cry. Several heart-stopping moments followed. Elizabeth swam with Raymond, but the current would quickly pull them back a bit. Yet she never gave up, continuously fighting against the current. Finally, she reached a position close enough to the shore. As another strong wave hit, she reached out and grabbed the branch extended from the shore. The people holding the other end of the branch quickly pulled the two towards the shore, swiftly bringing them up.
Most of the people on the scene and in the live broadcast breathed a sigh of relief; thankfully, they were rescued. Once on shore, Elizabeth sat half-reclined, gasping for breath. Although she regularly exercised, the recent ordeal had left her nearly exhausted, while Raymond was in a semi-conscious state. Fortunately, the medical team had arrived and quickly began treating Raymond. Soon, he coughed up several mouthfuls of water, coughed violently a few times, and slowly opened his eyes. Turning his head, he saw Elizabeth sitting nearby, propped up on her hands, looking at him. His eyes showed a softness he had never displayed before; indeed, it was her who had risked her life to save him.
