Chapter 435 Couldn't Stay Calm Anymore

After hanging up, Elizabeth thought for a bit and decided to stay at the hospital. She asked Alaric to swing by in the afternoon.

As the deputy director of the Special Department, Alaric had probably met some big shots or powerful diviners from the Divination Association, so she figured he could help ID someone.

Setting up surveillance in the ward would get noticed, but the hallway cameras were fair game. So while Alaric was busy with some stuff, Elizabeth hooked her computer up to the camera outside Zephyr's room.

Around one in the afternoon, Alaric showed up at the hospital. By two, Elizabeth spotted a group on the surveillance footage. Betty was with a frail old man, followed by three diviners.

Elizabeth paused the video and asked Alaric, "Mr. Voss, do you know the old guy in the video?"

Alaric leaned in, looking surprised. "Yeah, I do. That's Ethan, the president of the Divination Association."

Elizabeth, equally surprised, confirmed, "He's the president of the Divination Association?"

Alaric nodded, "Yep, that's him." The Special Department often worked with the Divination Association, so he'd met Ethan a few times.

Elizabeth thought for a moment and asked, "Does he look different now compared to before his seclusion?"

Alaric took a closer look. "He's a lot thinner, his hair's grayer, and he looks way older." Ethan's changes were pretty obvious, so Alaric noticed right away.

Elizabeth stared at the screen, deep in thought. According to Alaric, Ethan seemed to be suffering from some kind of backlash.

Alaric saw Elizabeth's serious look and asked, "Elizabeth, do you think something's wrong with him?"

Elizabeth thought for a moment and said, "Not sure yet. I need to meet him in person to know for sure. But I have a hunch that the person we're looking for might be him."

Alaric's face changed, and he murmured, "If it's him, that's really bad news." Ethan was the president of the Divination Association, with a high status and reputation in the sorcery world. He was also incredibly powerful.

Elizabeth looked at Alaric and asked with a smile, "If it really is him, what will you do? Will you still go after him?" She wanted to know the higher-ups' stance in the Special Department.

Alaric didn't hesitate, "Of course, we'll go after him. No matter who it is, if they've broken the law, they have to face the consequences." If they picked and chose cases based on someone's background and power, what was the point of the Special Department?

Elizabeth half-joked, "He's really powerful. Aren't you worried he'll cause trouble?"

Alaric replied honestly, "No matter how powerful he is, can he be stronger than modern weapons? Even if regular weapons can't handle him, in a desperate situation, we can apply to use some highly destructive special weapons."

This was the best way to keep powerful sorcerers in check. Otherwise, if Ethan used his divination sorcery to harm others whenever he felt like it, how could the Special Department, most of whom weren't divination masters, deal with him? Of course, they relied on high-tech methods and weapons. But unless it was a special emergency, they weren't allowed to use those special weapons.

Alaric's words were pretty much what Elizabeth had guessed. This was indeed an effective way to keep divination sorcerers in check.

With Elizabeth's current strength as a high-level diviner, she could easily dodge regular guns and cannons. They couldn't kill her with those.

But if it were highly destructive special weapons, she wouldn't stand a chance either. High-level diviners were much more powerful than regular folks, with a lot more tricks up their sleeves. But that didn't mean they could do things beyond human capability. They were still flesh and blood, and regular people could deal with them using conventional weapons.

Elizabeth nodded, "As long as you can keep that firm stance."

Just then, she noticed some movement. The little Aether Serpent poked its head out from under Percy's blanket, looking pretty pleased with itself. Sneakily, it jumped onto Ryan's bed and burrowed into his blanket.

There were no cameras in this room since they were useless against powerful diviners. A bit of evil energy could easily mess them up. So, usually, a few members of the Special Department took turns guarding the room.

Only then did she feel comfortable leaving the little Aether Serpent here to soak up the evil energy. Knowing the little guy, it would only move if it couldn't absorb any more from Percy.

Elizabeth walked in and took a closer look, confirming that the evil energy on Percy was completely gone. All thanks to the little Aether Serpent. She then pressed a few key points on Percy's body and injected a tiny bit of energy into them.

Alaric was startled, asking, "What's up with Percy? Did something happen?"

Elizabeth replied, "The evil sorcery on him is gone. I'm using this method to help him wake up sooner."

Alaric was thrilled, "That's awesome news."

About ten minutes later, Percy slowly opened his eyes and really woke up. Alaric couldn't help but marvel. 'Elizabeth's strength and skill are probably on par with the top diviners in the Divination Association.'

Elizabeth walked over and waved her hand in front of Percy. She asked, "Percy, you okay?"

Percy's previously unfocused eyes gradually regained clarity. He looked at Elizabeth, surprised, and stammered, "Am I... am I still alive?" He had thought he was already dead.

Elizabeth replied, "Yep, you're still alive. But you were really close to dying."

Percy weakly said, "You saved me, didn't you?"

Elizabeth nodded, "That's right. But if the person behind you still wants to use you, you might not be out of the woods yet."

Percy smiled bitterly, "He probably doesn't want to keep me around anymore."

Alaric walked over, curious, and asked, "What exactly happened when you went to the Divination Association? Why were you attacked?"

Percy knew Alaric was trustworthy, so he decided to spill the beans. He took a deep breath and began, "Because we discovered a very important clue. We found a meditation cushion at Ethan's place, the president of the Divination Association."

Alaric leaned forward, his eyes narrowing with interest. "Go on," he urged.

Percy continued, "I felt like the meditation cushion had been tampered with, so I secretly pulled out some of its filling for testing. It turned out to be the same as what was found in Darlene's nails. Our private actions must have been discovered. On our way back to Clifftonshireburg, the person we had captured suddenly went berserk and ambushed us. We were prepared and about to fight back when everything suddenly went black."

Percy lowered his voice, his tone filled with unease. "I felt a strong evil energy envelop our car, and then I blacked out. I don't know what happened after that."

Elizabeth looked at Percy and asked, "You only found the problem with the meditation cushion?" It felt like there was more.

Percy pressed his lips together and added, "I also noticed that Mr. Sanders' profile looked somewhat similar to Brenda's. When I stared at him, he suddenly turned to look at me, and his gaze felt very cold. I also felt a strange sense of familiarity from him. So I suspect he might be the mastermind behind all this."

Besides the sense of familiarity, Percy felt a deep-seated dislike and resistance toward Ethan. Maybe because of these feelings, Ethan sensed something was off with his emotions. That was why they ended up in danger.

It seemed Ethan could only use other forces to kill them and couldn't do it himself. That was why they weren't immediately killed. If it weren't for Elizabeth's intervention, Percy and Ryan would probably be dead.

Elizabeth immediately understood. That was why Ethan went to detoxify Zephyr; he couldn't stay calm anymore.
