Chapter 446 It Was a Matter of Who Outsmarted Whom
Aaron glanced at Elizabeth, his eyes a cocktail of emotions. "Thanks for the help," he muttered, though his gratitude was laced with bitterness from past grudges. He knew if it weren't for her, he wouldn't have been caught in the first place. But he also realized she saved him, probably to avoid any drama with his mentor.
Despite his lingering resentment, he didn't dare provoke Elizabeth again. The gemstone talisman she carved could neutralize even the strongest spells from top-tier diviners. Even though Aaron was still hurt, Elizabeth's intervention showed her power was on par with a high-level diviner. He knew no amount of training would ever make him her equal.
Elizabeth turned to Aaron. "To keep them off your back, Mr. Voss will announce that you died suddenly. We'll find you a new place to live."
Not wanting to go through that nightmare again, Aaron quickly nodded. "Okay." Then he added shamelessly, "Could you give me another protective talisman?"
Elizabeth rolled her eyes. "Nice try. Carving one of these takes a lot of time and effort. If I hadn't been worried about being blamed for your death, I wouldn't have given you one before. So don't even think about it now. Don't worry, your life won't be in danger anymore."
But Elizabeth knew that while Aaron's life might not be in immediate danger, he'd become powerless, unable to practice magic or harm others again. For a sorcerer who always thought he was above ordinary people, this was the worst fate. That's why she deliberately weakened the protective gemstone talisman. By letting Aaron get injured, she could implicate Ethan.
Aaron gave an awkward smile. "Alright, never mind then." He knew Elizabeth, fearing responsibility, wouldn't let him be killed. As long as he stayed alive, he could find a way to ask his mentor to rescue him.
Elizabeth walked over, took out a spell scroll, and placed it in her palm. She reached out to Aaron and said, "Give me that powder. Otherwise, if those people find it, they might suspect you're not dead."
Aaron knew he had to be careful now. He patted all the powder from his hand onto the spell scroll in her hand. He lowered his head while doing this and didn't notice the faint, imperceptible evil aura emanating from the ruby "bracelet" Elizabeth was wearing. The aura quickly entered his body.
Elizabeth, however, saw it. She had visited Zephyr earlier and temporarily brought out the little Aether Serpent just for this purpose. From the shattered gemstone talisman, she could sense her own aura. Ethan had indeed left such a backup plan. If it weren't for the protective gemstone talisman she gave, Aaron would have been dead. The evil spell aura on his body was hers. That grand evil wizard, Stanley, would definitely target her for revenge.
So, to fight Ethan, it wasn't just about power; it was also a battle of wits. In the end, it was a matter of who outsmarted whom.
The evil sorcery that entered Aaron's body now carried Ethan's aura. When she later activated the spell, Aaron might curse Ethan every day.
Wrapping the powder in the spell scroll, Elizabeth said, "Take care of yourself from now on." She nodded to Alaric and left.
Throughout the process, there was no physical contact with Aaron. When Aaron patted the powder, he also deliberately avoided touching Elizabeth. So he had no suspicions or extra thoughts.
As she left, Elizabeth snagged the tiny flying surveillance device hidden in the hallway corner. She'd figured Ethan would have someone make a move. So, after Alaric noticed Leander's people acting shady, she bought a flying insect-sized pinhole camera and stuck it in the hallway ceiling. The plan was to let Aaron see who was really behind his mess. She also saved the video as evidence to show his mentor later.
The external surveillance was still down. Alaric quickly arranged for Aaron to be moved. Then, a corpse that looked just like Aaron showed up in the room. The body had a strong evil aura, making it seem like it had been cursed to death.
In reality, this guy had already died from backlash before the evil aura was added. He was an evil sorcerer with a similar build to Aaron, who had killed over a hundred people using sorcery. He was cruel and loved torturing his victims. So, the special department used his body to fake Aaron's death. The evil sorcery on his body was just a cover. As long as Ethan and his students didn't inspect it closely, no one would notice anything off.
Half an hour later, Alaric reported that Aaron had been cursed to death. Leander then caused a scene, accusing Alaric and Elizabeth of conspiring to kill Aaron and demanded that the director hand over the investigation to him. If he were in charge, even without evidence, he could make some up.
But Alaric had already informed the director of the plan. So, the director wasn't about to let Leander mess things up. He even brought in higher-ups to pressure Leander, saying the matter should be put to rest for now. They needed to explain things to Alan and others.
Leander was secretly fuming, thinking the director was protecting Alaric. He always knew the director wanted Alaric to succeed him. This was unacceptable to him, as he had long considered the director's position to be his. So, he was determined to use this incident to bring Alaric down.
Leander then led people to inspect the body. As they got closer, they noticed the strong evil aura around it. Alaric's people stopped them from examining the body.
Leander wasn't in a rush and went back to inform Ethan of the situation. Ethan told him to guard the body and prevent Alaric's people from destroying it. Then, when Stanley arrived, they would take him to see the body. After Stanley saw the body, Leander would find a way to frame Alaric and Elizabeth for the incident.
If they couldn't frame them, it didn't matter. Stanley wouldn't spare Elizabeth and Alaric anyway. As long as he believed Elizabeth killed Aaron, their goal would be achieved.
Others didn't know, but Leander was well aware that Aaron was the grand evil wizard Stanley's biological son. Stanley would go nuts if his only bloodline was killed. As for Alaric, it didn't matter if they couldn't bring him down. If they couldn't, they would kill Alaric. A dead man couldn't be the director, right?
Leander knew Ethan was powerful and could definitely help him become the director. So, he felt reassured. Actually, Ethan was Leander's great-grandfather. However, their relationship was never made public, and very few people knew about it. To be precise, Leander's nominal great-grandfather was someone else, because his great-grandmother had an affair with Ethan, resulting in the birth of Leander's grandfather.
Ethan then contacted Stanley. Regretfully, he informed Stanley that Aaron had been killed. Ethan said he had originally planned to help rescue Aaron once things calmed down, but unfortunately, he was too late.
