Chapter 440 What's Wrong with Me Turning the Tables Just This Once?

Leon's question made it clear he still had more faith in Elizabeth.

Elizabeth grinned. "Relax. Zachary's got this. When the time comes, I'll take Zephyr to him for help."

She then turned to Ethan, stirring the pot. "Mr. Sanders, do you think Zachary can help us get rid of this poison bug?"

Ethan's face darkened. Then he forced a smile. "Mr. Murphy is impressive. But getting him to help? That's a whole different story." He knew Zachary wasn't the type to easily lend a hand, especially with another high-level sorcerer involved.

Elizabeth's smile grew. "Well, you're wrong. Zachary's already agreed to help me. Why else would I make such a promise?"

Ethan's anger flared. He snapped, "Then why did you even call me here? Just to make a fool out of me?"

Elizabeth raised an eyebrow. "Wasn't it Mrs. Clark who invited you? But if you think I'm just messing with you, fine. You've plotted against me so many times. What's wrong with me turning the tables just once?"

Ethan almost lost it. He huffed, "I underestimated you! Let's see how you get rid of the poison bug for Mr. Anderson."

Frustration boiled inside him. Elizabeth and the Anderson family were clearly playing him. They never intended to let him help with the poison bug. No wonder they'd been stalling; it had to be Elizabeth's idea.

Not wanting to embarrass himself further, he stormed off with the other three, leaving Betty awkwardly behind. She wanted to follow but was scared of Ethan's wrath.

After they left, she turned to Elizabeth. "Are you deliberately opposing me? Mr. Sanders could've cured Zephyr. Why did you drive him away? If you and Zachary fail, what will happen to Zephyr? I can't ask Mr. Sanders again."

Elizabeth rolled her eyes. "You still don't get it, do you? He and Brenda have been playing you from the start. But whatever. Explaining to someone as self-righteous as you is pointless. If you want to treat your enemies like good people and can't see through them, go ahead."

People like Betty wouldn't realize their mistakes until they suffered. Elizabeth wasn't going to waste her time. Betty would learn her lesson eventually. Elizabeth didn't owe her anything.

Betty felt uneasy but even angrier at Elizabeth's words. It felt like Elizabeth was calling her stupid. But Ethan was the president of the Divination Association; how could he be the bad guy Elizabeth described? She didn't quite believe it.

She thought Elizabeth still held a grudge against her and her mother, and that her main goal was to oppose her.

She took a deep breath and warned, "Mr. Sanders came to help out of kindness, and you drove him away. Don't regret it later. Leon, you too. If something happens to Zephyr, don't come to me to ask Mr. Sanders for help. I can't bring myself to ask him again."

Leon was furious. He shot back, "Don't worry, we won't bother you in the future."

Ruth pointed to the door, her face like stone. "Get out. You're not welcome here anymore." Betty was just being foolish and self-righteous. Her actions weren't about saving Zephyr; she was just making things worse. Ruth didn't want to see her anymore.

Betty turned to Phineas and Maria, clearly upset. "Aren't you going to do something about Leon and Ruth?"

Phineas sighed, disappointed. "Betty, you're not part of this family anymore. Don't come back."

Maria added, "Leave. You're not welcome here. If you keep being stubborn, you'll regret it sooner or later." She couldn't understand how Brenda had such a hold on Betty, making her ignore those who truly cared for her.

Betty felt hurt by her family's attitude. She said, feeling wronged, "You just don't like me. You're willing to abandon me for Elizabeth. Fine, I'll leave. I won't come back to bother you."

With that, she stormed out, eyes red. Elizabeth stayed quiet. So it was her fault again? Whatever, she didn't care what Betty thought.

Phineas looked at Elizabeth apologetically. "She's just confused right now. Don't mind her." Betty's behavior was only pushing Elizabeth further away. What a mess!

Elizabeth shrugged. "I don't care about her anyway."

She added, "I'll handle things here in Clifftonshireburg and take Zephyr to Aevum City in a few days."

Phineas nodded. "Alright, thank you."

Elizabeth thought for a moment and handed the little Aether Serpent on her arm to Zephyr. "Keep this with you. It can suppress the poison bug in your body."

The poison bug was food for the Aether Serpent, which naturally kept it in check. With the serpent, the poison wouldn't dare act up. Plus, it made it easier for her to remove the poison. She was worried Ethan might find a way to stir up trouble otherwise.

Ryan's evil aura was almost gone, and he'd wake up naturally in a day or two.

Zephyr thought it was just a bracelet and put it in his pocket. "Thanks, Elizabeth."

Elizabeth didn't stick around long and left after a quick goodbye. Then, she told Alaric to get moving.

Over the next two days, Leander kept trying to stall the investigation. Once Alaric got solid evidence, he went to the director, who was furious with those dragging things out. He'd been chewed out several times recently.

This morning, Alan had personally called to ask about the case, clearly unhappy with their progress. The director had also asked Leander about it, and Leander had said it was almost done. Turned out, it was all excuses, which was unacceptable.

So, the director called Leander in and gave him a serious dressing down. Then, he ordered Leander to hand the case over to Alaric. At this point, he didn't care about Leander's backers. Even if they were powerful, they were nothing compared to Alan.

Leander had no choice but to hand the case over to Alaric. He was pissed and wanted to find a way to get back at Aaron.

After Alaric took over, with Elizabeth's help, they gathered all the evidence in less than a day. They confirmed that Amy had paid Aaron to harm Elizabeth. So, they applied for an arrest warrant that day and headed to the Baker Villa.
