Chapter 412 It Was All a Scam from the Beginning
Elizabeth shot a quick glance at Vincent, hesitating about whether to spill the beans in front of him. Natalie caught on right away and said, "It's cool, my dad knows my mom's got issues. Go ahead, Elizabeth."
Elizabeth nodded, "He's got Whisperfade." She then broke down what Whisperfade was all about.
Natalie's face darkened. She muttered, "How could she be so heartless? She must want my dad to get sick so she can use it as an excuse to ask me for money. No wonder every time her family needed cash, my dad would fall ill. She'd show up at the hospital and hit us up for money."
Back then, Natalie thought as long as Piper took good care of Vincent and kept him happy, she'd swallow her disgust and give Piper money. But now, knowing the truth, she was livid.
Vincent sighed, "It's my fault for dragging you into this." If it weren't for Natalie, he sometimes didn't even want to go on. As for Piper, he'd long since given up hope. She was selfish and heartless. But to keep Natalie from being stuck in the middle, he pretended to care about Piper. After all, Piper was Natalie's real mom, and he was just the stepdad. His own family was long gone, and he cherished this rare father-daughter bond.
Natalie's eyes welled up. She choked out, "No, it's us who dragged you down."
Then she turned to Elizabeth, pleading, "Elizabeth, can you get rid of the Whisperfade in my dad?"
Elizabeth replied, "Yes. But I need to check how bad the Whisperfade is in Vincent first to figure out the best way to remove it."
Natalie lit up, "That's awesome. Please, help my dad."
Elizabeth nodded and walked over. With Vincent's okay, she placed her fingers on his wrist and used her energy to probe.
After a moment, she pulled her hand back and frowned. She said seriously to Vincent, "Your Whisperfade is really bad. Looks like you've been poisoned for over twenty years. Did you have sudden palpitations or fainting spells before you got married? But when you went to the hospital, they couldn't find anything wrong?"
Vincent looked even more surprised. He nodded. "Yeah, that's true. When I first met Piper, it happened twice. She even went with me to the hospital and comforted me, so I remember it well."
Then his expression changed. "Could it be she gave me this Whisperfade disguised as drinks back then? After we started dating, she always brought me sweet drinks. I asked her to drink too, but she didn't. She said she made it just for me and that I should drink it all so her effort wouldn't go to waste." Back then, he thought Piper was so kind, but now, looking back, it was terrifying.
Vincent muttered, "No wonder before I met her, I was in great health, even joined the school football team. After being with her, my health started having issues, though not too bad at first. After marriage, I began to suddenly fall ill, and my health went downhill. Later, I had to be hospitalized several times a year and couldn't even work normally. I asked for a divorce, but she refused, saying it was for my sake. I always thought my poor health was a burden on her, which led her to be with others."
So even though Piper cheated and had three kids with other guys, Vincent always put up with it and tried to make things work. After all, he lost his ability to have kids after a severe illness post-marriage. He could understand if she felt lonely or wanted children. He never wanted to trap her and had suggested divorce multiple times.
He didn't want anything from her, but she always refused. She'd say, "In your condition, what would you do alone if we divorced? I had kids to take care of us in our old age." He didn't fully buy it but thought that despite her bad temper and tendency to support her maiden family, she had some sense of duty.
Vincent believed he shouldn't be a burden to Piper. So as long as he wasn't hospitalized, he did all the housework and cooking. He even tutored online and did freelance writing to cover living and hospital expenses. He also used his parents' inheritance to support her maiden family. But he never expected it was all a scam from the start. He became like this because of her.
This realization almost broke Vincent's spirit. Then he heard Natalie sobbing and looked over, quickly pulling himself together. Although Piper brought him great harm and hardship, she also gave him a caring Natalie. One must be content to be happy; there was no need to dwell on the past. With this thought, he quickly calmed down.
Natalie cried bitterly. She always thought her father's illness began before his marriage, so she attributed it to his health. But she had never expected it was all caused by Piper. Her face darkened as she said, "That vicious woman Piper, I won't let her get away with this."
Elizabeth asked, "Didn't you take your dad to see a divination master before?" Logically, Natalie should have been more thorough. Moreover, her biological father Ethan was a divination master.
Natalie answered with a face full of regret, "I did. I suspected my dad's annual illness might be unusual. Then I asked several famous divination masters in Clifftonshireburg to check on my dad. They all said my dad's health was poor, and his sense of destiny was bad, so he kept getting sick. Two years ago, we even went to the Mystic Divination Academy in Clifftonshireburg and asked the principal's best student for help. But he didn't find anything unusual, saying my dad was just normally ill. He said that although my dad often got sick, it didn't seriously affect his lifespan. He gave us a Spellscroll, saying that with proper care, my dad could live long. So I didn't suspect anything else. Nor did I think it was Piper's doing."
Elizabeth thought for a moment and asked, "Does Vincent still have the Spellscroll given by the student from the Mystic Divination Academy?"
Logically, Vincent's sense of destiny and the evil aura between his brows were quite obvious. Any divination master with second-tier strength should be able to see something. But why did that student say it was normal?
