Chapter 419 What Were They After?
Elizabeth handed the amulet gemstones and spell scrolls from the lottery to Shirley, asking her to mail them. With Elizabeth's blessing, nothing would get lost.
After sorting things out at the studio, Elizabeth took off on a trip with Raymond and a few others. Heading straight to Shadow Peak might raise some eyebrows from those watching her, so they kicked off their journey from Clifftonshireburg instead.
Meanwhile, Rebecca got back from abroad and snagged endorsements with two big brands. She was a real pro at her job. Once she had her work sorted, she joined Elizabeth and the gang on their trip.
Hubert had been missing Rebecca a lot lately, but she kept giving him the cold shoulder. When she went abroad last time, he wanted to tag along, but work held him back. Now, with his schedule finally clear, he decided to give it another shot and follow her.
Going solo made Hubert worry that Rebecca might send him packing or that he'd get roasted by Elizabeth and Rebecca. So, he hit up Eugene and Richard in their group chat, sweet-talking them into joining the adventure.
He thought, 'If we're real bros, we should share the load. When the time comes, let Eugene and Richard take more of the heat from the ladies.'
Eugene, still pining for Elizabeth since they split, couldn't pass up the chance, even though he knew she'd probably blow him off.
Richard, on the other hand, wasn't keen on the idea at first. Why chase after these two for women? Plus, he was scared of Elizabeth's sharp tongue. But Hubert and Eugene ganged up on him, convincing him to join. In the end, he reluctantly agreed.
To beef up their crew, Richard roped in Arnold and Kevin, conveniently leaving out the real reason for the trip. He just said they were heading out for some fun, and after some thought, they agreed to come along.
Arnold and Kevin had been saying they were busy writing a new song and joining a film cast, but those were just excuses. After deciding not to cater to Betty's whims anymore, Kevin turned down a script he didn't like.
By this point, Elizabeth and the others had already reached an ancient town near Shadow Peak. Then, they all met up at the airport and flew to the city where the ancient town was located. On the plane, Arnold and Kevin were a bit puzzled seeing Eugene and Hubert. Something didn't add up.
Kevin turned to Richard. "Richard, are they tagging along too?"
Richard nodded, "Yeah, it'll be more fun with the whole gang. You know Eugene and Hubert—they're always up for some fun."
Kevin raised an eyebrow, cutting straight to the point, "Richard, are you guys here to follow Elizabeth and her crew?" He'd seen Raymond showing off recent trip photos with Elizabeth and the others on social media, including Rebecca yesterday. Connecting the dots wasn't hard.
Richard flashed a guilty smile, "Yeah, we're tagging along to see Elizabeth. We'll watch the drama unfold. Besides, escaping our moms for a bit sounds good. Let's just relax and enjoy."
Kevin and Arnold exchanged wary glances, realizing they'd been duped. Was it too late to get off the plane now? They'd followed Eugene and Hubert all the way here, ensuring they'd face icy receptions from Elizabeth and Rebecca.
Arnold grumbled, "Richard, you're really not a good person."
Richard shrugged, "I'm bringing you to see Elizabeth. How does that make me a bad person?"
Kevin rolled his eyes, "Elizabeth has to welcome us first!" He really wanted to travel with Elizabeth, but she definitely wouldn't be happy to see them.
Richard tried to reason, "Look, we've been wanting to mend things with Elizabeth for ages. Even if she ignores us, we can help with luggage and other chores. Elizabeth will see our sincerity."
Arnold and Kevin thought it made sense. After dealing with Betty and Brenda, they realized how good Elizabeth was. They didn't expect to restore their sibling relationship with Elizabeth, but if she could forgive them and keep in touch, that would be nice.
When they arrived at the airport, the five rented a car to the ancient town, booking the same hotel as Elizabeth and her friends. When they arrived, Elizabeth and her group had just finished their nap and were preparing to go out. They were collectively surprised to see the five men.
Rebecca frowned. "Why are you here?"
Hubert put on a façade of surprise, smiling, "We planned a trip and didn't expect to run into you here. What a coincidence we're even at the same hotel."
Elizabeth scoffed, "Your act is terrible. We aren't idiots." She wasn't surprised that Hubert followed Rebecca. But she hadn't expected the three troublemakers to come too. What were they after? Could it be that they're really that masochistic? They actually felt uncomfortable if she hadn't scolded them recently?
Rebecca rolled her eyes at Hubert, "Exactly. Hubert, it's pointless to pester us. Take your buddies and leave."
Feigning innocence, Hubert responded, "Rebecca, I swear, I'm not here to bother you. Eugene wanted to see you and Elizabeth, so we all came."
Eugene, speechless, realized Hubert had directly shifted the blame to him. He noticed Elizabeth's gaze was cold, as if she was about to explode.
Unwilling to be the scapegoat, he said quickly, "I was invited by Richard and the others. Kevin saw Raymond's posts and wanted to join the fun. We're just here for a good time. You don't have to worry about us."
Richard and Kevin stood silently, realizing Hubert and Eugene were dodging the heat. Richard, now looking innocent, added, "Arnold needed inspiration for a new song. Kevin mentioned the scenic beauty here, so we tagged along." He reacted a bit slow earlier, so shifting the blame back wasn't realistic. So, let Arnold bear more of it.
Kevin, caught in the middle, nodded, "Yeah, we're here for Arnold's new song."
Arnold, blindsided, was fuming inside. He found out the true purpose on the plane, and now, it seemed the responsibility was dumped solely on him. These guys were really shameless!
