Chapter 352 So That's How It Is
Zachary spilled the beans to Elizabeth not just because he hated lies, but also because he was super strong. If she had any bad vibes or plans against him, he'd totally pick up on it. With their power levels being so different, he wouldn't let her stick around if she was up to no good. Plus, she might be his ticket out of his current mess.
Elizabeth asked, "Zachary, why are you stuck with this city? If I know the reason, maybe I can help you figure something out."
Zachary sighed, "Alright, since you're already in the loop, here's the deal. Over 800 years ago, some foreign jerks tried to wipe out this city. I was born here and had just come back from a trip to see my family. So, I used some serious magic to take them down."
"But that blew my cover as a master diviner, and the enemy called in an evil wizard to take me out. I was only twenty-six and not a top-tier diviner yet. But this guy was already a high-level evil wizard. During the fight, I used a secret family technique to boost my power temporarily to match his. To save the city, I ended up dying with him."
"Turns out, I wasn't completely dead. I went into a deep sleep and woke up 300 years later, looking the same and with all my organs intact. I became immortal, stuck at twenty-six forever. My power also leveled up to a high-level diviner."
"But I found out I couldn't leave Aevum City. Over the centuries, I pushed my power to almost the peak of high-level diviners. This allowed me to not only move within Aevum City but also extend my reach 300 miles beyond its borders. That's why I could follow you to the hospital outside the city last time," Zachary explained everything to Elizabeth.
Elizabeth nodded. "Got it. The reason you didn't die and your body changed must be linked to Aevum City. I'll let you know if I come up with a solution. Or if I crack the Gemstone Halo and find that so-called opportunity, I'll keep an eye out for anything that might help you."
She already had an idea to help Zachary. If she taught him a technique she knew, and he used it to refine Aevum City, he could break free. This ritual method wouldn't harm anyone in or out of the city. But she couldn't tell Zachary now because she wasn't even a high-level diviner, and she wasn't supposed to know such a method.
She had to be careful. What if he got greedy once she spilled the beans? Until she was strong enough to handle him, she'd keep her plan under wraps. She needed a legit reason to present it later, maybe by unlocking the map within the Gemstone Halo and finding the location. Then she could say she found the technique there, avoiding any suspicion.
Zachary had a hunch that Elizabeth was onto something. But he figured someone her age and experience wouldn't know how to help him break free from his city-bound curse. He looked at her and said, "Alright, I'll wait for your good news then!"
He added, "If you can help me get out of this city, I'll owe you big time."
Being stuck in Aevum City for so long was driving him nuts. After he got the hang of using electronic devices, he realized how much the world had changed in the past century. He was itching to see it for himself.
Plus, he had this gut feeling. To hit the peak of high-level diviners, he needed to break free and find his opportunity out there.
Elizabeth smiled. "Alright!" If she could help Zachary leave Aevum City, she'd definitely want that big favor.
She thought for a moment and said, "Zachary, I've got a question for you."
Zachary nodded. "Shoot."
Elizabeth asked, "So, you're over 800 years old. Is Xavier really your teacher?"
Xavier wasn't immortal. For him to live that long, he must've used Generational Blessings to extend his life.
Zachary chuckled, "No, my teacher passed away ages ago. Xavier is one of us, but he's my junior." He admitted, "I said he was my teacher just to get closer to you."
Elizabeth asked again, "How old is he then?"
Zachary smiled and shook his head. "Can't say."
Elizabeth raised an eyebrow. "Does he have any connection with Brenda?"
Zachary shook his head again. "Don't ask me. I can't spill the beans about your two teachers. They're connected to me, and if I reveal anything, it'll backfire on me."
He looked at her meaningfully and said, "You're destined to face these challenges. If you want to break free, you've got to find the answers yourself. I can't help you with this."
If it were anything else, he'd help her out. But in this case, he really couldn't. She had this weird sense of destiny, almost like she didn't belong to this world. If he told her directly, it'd be like revealing her future, and he'd suffer for it.
Elizabeth looked at him and felt he wasn't lying. So, she didn't push further and changed the topic. "How old is Wayne then? That shouldn't count as revealing, right? After all, I'm his only student, and I'm kind of part of your group."
Zachary replied, "You haven't officially enrolled, so you're not part of our group yet. But I can tell you how old Wayne was; it doesn't count as revealing. He was nearly three hundred years old when he passed away. Before he got injured, he had already become a master diviner. The injuries he sustained weakened him and shortened his life. Plus, he changed your destiny once, using up the last of his life in the process."
