Chapter 54 Such Excitement Right at the Start
Everyone else had already washed up and gone to their rooms to rest. Brenda lay on her bed, replaying the day's events in her mind. She couldn't shake the worry that someone might be digging into the relationship between the three of them. The more she thought about it, the more anxious she became. Finally, she grabbed her phone and sent a message to Kevin.
Kevin saw the message, got up, and headed outside. He found Brenda standing under the fruit tree in the yard. Walking over, he asked, "Brenda, what's up?"
As soon as she saw Kevin, Brenda rushed into his arms. "Kevin, I'm scared."
Kevin was caught off guard. "Scared of what?"
With tears in her eyes, Brenda clung to his waist and looked up at him. "I'm scared our relationship will get exposed. I'm worried you'll get dragged into this and get in trouble because of me. You're Elizabeth's real brother, and I'm... I'm just nobody."
She started to cry, feeling overwhelmed. "I'm so scared that Mom, Dad, and you will all abandon me."
Ever since Elizabeth was found, Brenda had been living in constant fear. She had been the young lady of the Clark family for so long and couldn't bear the thought of going back to her old life. So, she often tried to subtly undermine Elizabeth in front of the Clark family. She made it seem like Elizabeth not only wanted to take her place but also looked down on her. It was as if Elizabeth wanted to take everything from her and push her out.
Over the past year, Brenda had been pretty successful with her manipulations. Her parents and brothers still loved her more and were growing more and more dissatisfied with Elizabeth. What did it matter that Elizabeth was their biological daughter? She still couldn't compare to Brenda, the adopted daughter. Whenever Brenda wanted something of Elizabeth's, she just had to show a little interest, and the Clark family would take it from Elizabeth and give it to her.
Everything had been under her control until the incident with the quota. Since then, things had started to spiral out of control. Elizabeth suddenly lashed out at the family she cared so much about and even severed ties with them before leaving. At first, Brenda was thrilled, thinking she had finally driven Elizabeth away. The Clark family would still have only her as their little princess.
But things didn't go as planned. After Elizabeth left, the Clark family might have blamed and scolded her, even threatening to deal with her, but they also showed a strong desire to bring her back.
Take Kevin, for example. Elizabeth used to revolve around him, but since the reality show started, he couldn't help but approach Elizabeth, seeking her affection. This made Brenda uncomfortable and gave her a sense of crisis.
She felt things shouldn't be this way. Especially today, because of the three rules Elizabeth mentioned, their relationship was almost exposed during the live stream. She panicked even more. After much thought, she realized that driving Elizabeth away might not have been the best approach. She should let Elizabeth continue to incur the Clark family's displeasure until they finally drove her out themselves. So she needed to get the family to coax Elizabeth back and then find ways to slowly sow discord among them, making them eventually unable to tolerate Elizabeth and driving her out on their own. Only then could the problem be truly solved.
Kevin held Brenda's shoulder with one hand and patted her head with the other. "Brenda, that won't happen. You're our family's little princess. How could we ever abandon you? As for the issue of identity, you don't need to worry about that either. This hasn't been exposed yet, has it? Richard will definitely find a way to handle it; even if it does get exposed, I'm not afraid of being scolded. We'll protect you."
Seeing Brenda's fear and anxiety, Kevin regretted his impulsiveness earlier in the day. He also felt a bit resentful towards Elizabeth for insisting on those three rules. Wasn't that just a deliberate way to tell everyone they were related by blood? It wasn't that he didn't want to acknowledge Elizabeth as his sister; it just wasn't the right time to make it public. They needed to wait until Brenda no longer feared being abandoned, until she felt secure and had firmly established herself in the entertainment industry. Why couldn't Elizabeth wait just a little longer?
"You really won't abandon me?" Brenda asked pitifully, looking at him as if she needed reassurance.
Kevin felt a pang of sympathy seeing her like this. He bent down and habitually kissed her forehead, saying firmly, "Of course, we won't abandon you. You'll always be our family, don't worry."
Only then did Brenda break into a smile and said coquettishly, "Then after this episode of the show ends, you all should bring Elizabeth back properly. After all, she is the Clark family's biological daughter. I don't want her to leave the Clark family because of me. I've been feeling very uneasy lately. If she doesn't come back, I'll feel like it's my fault and want to leave too."
Kevin's eyes softened as he looked at her. "My Brenda is so kind and understanding. Her leaving was her own willfulness; it has nothing to do with you. Don't overthink it. Of course, she is the Clark family's daughter, and we will bring her back. Rest assured, once she learns her lesson and returns, she shouldn't deliberately compete with you anymore."
They all hoped to see Elizabeth and Brenda coexist peacefully at home. Maybe after Elizabeth had enough of her tantrum and returned, this could be achieved.
Hearing this, Brenda felt relieved. She leaned in and kissed his cheek. "I knew you would understand me, Kevin. You're the best!"
After joining the Clark family, Brenda had deliberately initiated many intimate gestures with her brothers to make them dote on her more and to become closer. She even asked them to kiss her forehead and cheeks as a form of comfort and reward. She would also kiss them to show approval and affection. As she had hoped, this intimacy continued as they grew up, and their relationship only grew stronger. In Brenda's mind, she considered her five brothers as her own and didn't want anyone else to come between them.
Neither of them noticed that the yard gate was open and the camera equipment was already on. From the moment they embraced, their actions had been recorded live. Because of the distance, their voices were deliberately kept low, so the audience only saw their intimate actions without hearing their conversation. This lack of audio made their closeness even more shocking.
The previously closed live stream had suddenly resumed. Arthur's team had decided to do a surprise check to see their nightly routines. Who would have thought that such an exciting scene would unfold right at the start?
The cameraman couldn't just stand at the gate, as that would seem too deliberate. The juicy, exciting part had already been broadcasted. So he carried the camera into the yard, followed by other crew members. Their entrance startled Kevin and Brenda, who immediately let go of each other.
Kevin frowned at them. "What are you doing here?" Then he noticed the camera was on. His expression changed slightly. "Are you live streaming?"
Hearing this, Brenda's face also changed, worried that their conversation had been broadcasted. Both of them silently cursed Arthur's team for being so sneaky.
