Chapter 381 Isn't It Coming True Now?
Seeing the disappointment in Paul's eyes, Betty felt even more upset.
With tears in her eyes, she said, "I just want Elizabeth to be the sweet, caring daughter she used to be. Is that so wrong? She's so cold and distant now; it's like she's a different person. So, is it crazy for me to think she might be cursed?"
Kevin, exasperated, replied, "You actually believe what Mrs. Baker said? Mom, were you out of your mind? Why is Elizabeth so cold and distant? Isn't it because we pushed her away? Mom, you need to wake up."
From what Betty was saying, she still didn't think she was wrong. Amy had always disliked Elizabeth, so how could she be so kind-hearted to help? Moreover, didn't Betty have any idea why Elizabeth turned out this way?
Kevin didn't really buy it. He believed more that Betty was taking out her anger on Elizabeth, which was why she impulsively went along with Amy's plan.
Deep down, Betty should have known Amy had bad intentions. However, Betty probably didn't mean to harm Elizabeth seriously; she just wanted to teach her a lesson.
Richard chimed in, "Mom, stop hiding your little schemes; we all know."
Enrique added, "Mom, you're becoming more and more like Brenda, always blaming others."
Arnold also looked at Betty disapprovingly. "Mom, you went too far this time; we can't side with you."
Hearing her sons' words, Betty was so angry she almost fainted. Except for Loren, who was on a business trip, the remaining four sons were all criticizing her. These ungrateful brats, she had raised them for nothing.
She snapped, "Believe it or not, I really didn't know about this at the time. Back then, didn't you also team up with Brenda to deal with Elizabeth? Now, you're trying to act all righteous, but it only matters if she appreciates your efforts."
Paul frowned. "You went to Aevum City to bring Elizabeth back, only to complain to me later, claiming that Elizabeth cursed you, saying that if you continued to associate with Mrs. Baker, calamity would befall you. And hasn't it come true now? This indicates that Elizabeth saw the issue back then and even warned you. Yet, you didn't believe her and instead resented her more. So, who is to blame? Your current predicament is your own doing."
Betty felt guilty. "How was I supposed to know she was genuinely warning me?"
At that time, she was so angry that she thought Elizabeth was not only mocking her but also cursing her, so she couldn't listen. Now she indeed regretted it. She should have heeded Elizabeth's warning and stayed away from that witch Amy.
Paul sighed, "So now we can't really ask her for help." Betty was really too stubborn.
Betty panicked. "What should I do now? I'm feeling worse and worse. Do I have a skin disease, or have I been cursed? I've been with you all the time, and after returning to Clifftonshireburg, I haven't gone out. Logically, it shouldn't be an evil wizard targeting me, right?"
She hoped it was just a skin disease that could be treated at the hospital. She was clinging to that tiny bit of hope. Just then, Paul's assistant sent over a photo that Paul had asked him to investigate. He opened it and showed it to Betty, "Have you seen this guy before?"
Betty leaned in to look and her face went pale. "I saw him. When I got back to the hotel that day, I ran into him in the elevator. He bumped into me when I got out."
Because of his appearance and the bump, she remembered him clearly.
She started to cry, "Could this guy be the evil wizard?"
Paul shattered Betty's last hope. "He is the evil wizard Mrs. Baker hired." He then said with a sigh, "Looks like you've been cursed."
He didn't expect Betty to get cursed just by returning to the hotel.
Betty panicked even more and grabbed Paul, asking, "What should I do? If I stay like this, how can I go out?"
She had just looked in the mirror and was horrified. Her face was covered in red spots, looking terrifying, almost disfigured.
She thought of another question. "Besides this, will I die?"
She had heard that many evil wizards were ruthless. Would he want to kill her?
Paul gave her a reassuring look. "He probably won't kill you; otherwise, your face and body wouldn't look like this. You'd already be dead. I'll get a divination master to help you."
The Clark Group's diviner was gone, but other groups also had divination masters. He had to swallow his pride and ask for an introduction.
Betty was at her wit's end. "Okay, hurry up."
Paul then made a call and, through a friend, invited a divination master. He also had Richard drive to pick him up.
When the master arrived, he examined Betty. He found that something was wrong, like she had been poisoned by insects, but after using some methods, he couldn't expel the poison. He could only apologize and say he was powerless. Paul had to keep contacting other divination masters.
Several masters came to examine Betty. The results were similar; they determined she was poisoned by insects, but the poison in Betty's body was too strong for them to expel. If they used forceful methods, it might harm Betty and even kill her. Hearing this, neither Paul nor Betty dared to let them use such methods.
Paul had no choice but to contact the Special Department and the Divination Association. He reported Amy for hiring an evil wizard to target Betty. Now that Betty was cursed, they needed to investigate and take action.
Such matters were indeed within the jurisdiction of these two departments, so they sent people to investigate. Similarly, they couldn't help Betty, but because of the Clark Family's status and influence, and because they had to handle this matter, they promised to invite a divination master specializing in insect poison from Aevum City to Clifftonshireburg to detoxify Betty. It finally gave Paul and Betty some relief.
Betty wanted to rid her body of the poison as soon as possible; just the thought of it made her feel disgusted and scared. But the divination master was in Aevum City and would take two days to arrive. She had no choice but to wait.
Meanwhile, the special department followed procedures to question Amy.
