Chapter 458 One Last Chance for You
After Elizabeth left, Betty looked at Brenda with a somber expression. "Leave," she said, her voice heavy with emotion.
Ethan and Piper had conspired to take Elizabeth away and had schemed against the Clark Family extensively. It was clear Betty found it difficult to face Brenda now.
Seeing Betty's expression, Brenda knew that Betty still harbored resentment toward her. But Brenda couldn't leave; she had nowhere else to go. More than half of the money she had gotten from Betty had been given to Piper, and she had nearly spent the rest. The property she once owned had been reclaimed by the Clark Family after she returned from Aevum City.
If Brenda left, she would have to rent a place, but she didn't have much money left and couldn't afford a luxury house. She didn't want to live a miserable life.
Desperation took over, and she suddenly knelt in front of Betty, tears streaming down her face. "Mom, please don't drive me away. You're all I have left now," she cried, clutching one of Betty's legs. "I didn't even know Ethan was my biological father, and I have no dealings with him. I acknowledged him before because I was afraid he would harm us. But I have no connection or feelings for him. In my heart, you're my only family. Even though you're not my biological mother, you're better than a real mother. I've only ever considered you my mom since I was a child!"
She hugged Betty's leg tighter as she continued, "Mom, please let me stay and continue to take care of you. I definitely won't go with Ethan. If he comes back, I'll stand in his way. You heard what he said earlier; I didn't know anything. I'm an innocent victim too. I just want to stay with you and live a peaceful life."
Brenda knew exactly what Betty wanted to hear. Betty was wary and somewhat afraid of Ethan now, and having Brenda around would make her feel more at ease. After all, Ethan probably wouldn't harm Brenda, so she offered to stand in his way for Betty. Brenda also emphasized that Betty was her only family and mother, which resonated deeply with Betty.
Sure enough, after hearing Brenda's words, Betty's expression softened a bit. Brenda had been so young back then, and what Ethan did had nothing to do with her.
Betty felt lost and unsure of what to do. She didn't dare to continue living in the villa, yet she was too embarrassed to return to the Clark Family. She needed someone to accompany her, which seemed to provide some comfort. Especially since Brenda now only had her as family and would rely on and listen to her in the future.
However, she still felt disgusted and said coldly, "I'll give you one last chance. You are not allowed to contact those people again. If they come to you for anything, you must tell me immediately. This place has an evil aura. Let's move to the apartment in the city center." She felt safer in a bustling and crowded place like the city center.
Brenda smiled through her tears, "Thank you, Mom. I'll listen to you from now on."
The two packed up and went to Betty's large apartment in the city center. While Brenda was packing in her room, Betty instructed the two servants who were coming with them to keep an eye on Brenda.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth drove to the outskirts of the city. At a highway service area, she found Zachary sitting and drinking coffee. She walked over and sat down beside him. "Zachary, did you send away the person who was supposed to take you to the ancient tomb?" she asked.
They had discussed it earlier. If someone suddenly wanted to take Zachary away, he would pretend to go along but would find a way to leave halfway and not actually go. After all, Ethan and the people behind him had always been interested in Zachary's physique. If he really went, what if Ethan set a trap for him? Even though Zachary was strong, he couldn't be careless.
Zachary nodded, "I used a spell, and he drove himself to the ancient tomb."
Elizabeth pondered momentarily and said, "Let's go, get in the car and go back."
Zachary stood up and nodded, "Alright." This wasn't the place to talk.
Once in the car, Elizabeth asked, "The person who tried to take you away was Xavier. Does that mean he's the biggest villain behind all this?"
Zachary pondered momentarily and replied, "It seems so."
Elizabeth asked curiously, "What's the relationship between Xavier and Ethan?"
If Xavier was the mastermind, then Wayne's death was likely related to Xavier.
Zachary replied, "They have a teacher-student relationship. When I woke up, I saw Xavier, Bradley, and Wayne. Then I confirmed they were my juniors. Wayne had the highest talent and was the most upright, fully dedicated to his practice. Later, they all became senior diviners and had their own opportunities, so they lived to your time. Ethan was a student Xavier took on after becoming a senior diviner, but his talent was much inferior to the three of them. Ethan liked power and became the president of the Divination Association over a hundred years ago. Xavier soon became the vice president, mainly to support Ethan. But their relationship was not known to outsiders. They appeared to have little contact, as if they had no connection."
He paused and continued, "Ethan, due to his lack of talent, never reached the level of a senior diviner before his life was about to end. Then Xavier used resources and methods to forcibly push him to the level of a senior diviner. After he advanced to a senior diviner, it was difficult for him to make further progress and he failed to continuously extend his life. Then he came up with the idea of using Generational Blessings to extend his life. He also somehow learned a method to avoid Celestial Condemnation. He kept scheming, having children to take Generational Blessings to extend his life, avoiding Celestial Condemnation."
He sighed, "Wayne and I opposed and tried to stop it. But Xavier ordered us not to interfere. We had all sworn an oath that as long as it didn't involve our own life, we couldn't disobey the president's orders. Otherwise, we would face Celestial Condemnation. I couldn't leave Aevum City, and once I encountered someone being schemed against by Ethan, I warned them. But the person was blinded by love and didn't appreciate it, thinking I was causing trouble and trying to drive a wedge between him and his wife. After that, I didn't bother with these matters anymore. Wayne secretly helped some people, including you and Percy."
He looked at Elizabeth deeply, going on, "Later, Xavier came to me, saying your fate was special and might help me break free from Aevum City's constraints. I also felt a glimmer of hope in you, so I pretended to be his student to get close to you. But the condition was that I couldn't tell you about them while in Aevum City."
Zachary added, "Now that I'm not in Aevum City, I'm not violating the president's orders."
After hearing his words, Elizabeth thought for a moment and muttered, "I see, so Xavier is the ultimate villain."
Then she pressed, "What about Bradley?"
Zachary replied, "I don't know much about Bradley; I've only seen him a few times. He rarely goes to Aevum City and stays at the Mystic Divination Academy. So I don't know if he and Xavier are in cahoots."
