Chapter 317 What A Stark Contrast
Elizabeth's idea to swing by Enrique's place caught everyone off guard. But that was just classic Elizabeth, always thinking of others.
Now, look at Brenda, all sulky and bitter. Has she even considered checking in on Enrique, the guy who took the fall for her?
Man, what a difference! You gotta wonder what Enrique's gonna think when he finds out the real deal.
Elizabeth, even though she was the one being targeted, still wanted to see him. But Brenda, who had been saved by him, seemed to have totally forgotten about him.
Everyone else got it twisted, but Zachary shot Elizabeth a knowing glance. She's probably up to something with Enrique.
Raymond had a smirk in his eyes too. They both knew Elizabeth wasn't really worried about Enrique.
Raymond chimed in, "Enrique might be a pain most of the time, but with those injuries, we should definitely check on him."
Then he turned to Brenda and asked, "You still going? Bet Enrique doesn't wanna see you right now."
Brenda squirmed after hearing Elizabeth. She'd been so wrapped up in her own drama that she forgot about the hospital visit. Now that Elizabeth mentioned it first, she looked even worse. Elizabeth was playing it smart.
And Raymond? Totally stirring the pot. If he hadn't called her out, no one would've noticed. Now, all eyes were on Brenda.
Sure enough, everyone stared at Brenda.
With a forced smile, Brenda said, "Of course, I want to go. I was planning to talk to the director about heading to the hospital after this event. Now that everyone's going, it's perfect."
She was trying to act like she hadn't forgotten about Enrique.
Just then, Eugene walked over and caught her words. With a rare look of disdain, he said, "Kevin was so worried he followed the ambulance to the hospital with Enrique. You've got some nerve. Enrique took the hit for you, and here you are, waiting for the event to end to visit him."
Eugene was shocked by Brenda's coldness earlier. He couldn't believe she was so heartless. And his mother was a fool to like and protect someone like Brenda. Maybe birds of a feather really do flock together. He wondered if Amy was just like Brenda and decided to keep his distance from her too.
Eugene's words blew Brenda's cover. If she really cared about Enrique, she would've followed the ambulance. Kevin's actions showed real concern. But Brenda? She was waiting for the event to end, clearly not giving a damn about Enrique.
In the livestream chat, Brenda was getting roasted, with Enrique's fans fuming, wishing they could strangle her.
Brenda's face went stiff, and she glared at Eugene, saying, "Really? I didn't know that, or I would've gone with Kevin."
She quickly changed the subject. "Let's hurry up and go."
Eugene was getting bolder, coming over just to humiliate her. What did she do to deserve this? Was it because they regretted their actions and wanted Elizabeth's forgiveness, so they had to put her down?
The more Brenda thought about it, the angrier she got, and her hatred for Elizabeth grew. Ever since Elizabeth came back, she'd been trying to outdo Brenda, making the brothers distant. Even Eugene, who used to care, didn't like her anymore. Elizabeth should've never come back, maybe never even been alive.
Her hand balled into a fist inside her sleeve. She couldn't let this menace keep living and messing up her life.
Elizabeth could feel the hate and bad vibes coming off Brenda. It made her even more cautious. But she knew the backlash was gonna hit Brenda hard.
"Let's head to the hospital," Elizabeth said.
When Brenda spoke, no one cared, but the second Elizabeth said something, everyone jumped to action. It made Brenda even more jealous; these people were just too much.
Arthur had already set up a carriage, and everyone piled in. They'd switch to cars outside Aevum City to get to the hospital.
By now, Enrique's condition had stabilized after some emergency treatment. While Enrique was getting checked out, Kevin used the phone the director had given them to watch the livestream. They needed to contact their families and cover expenses, so they needed their phones. Plus, he wanted to see everyone's reactions.
Soon after, Enrique's exam was done.
His injuries were bad, and he needed surgery right away. As he was getting prepped for the OR and Kevin was signing the consent forms, the livestream was still rolling. Both brothers saw what went down and heard Elizabeth and Brenda's convo.
Kevin looked conflicted, saying, "I didn't expect Elizabeth to be the first to suggest visiting you."
He thought Brenda would fake being worried and suggest visiting Enrique first. But Brenda didn't care at all and was cool with waiting until the event was over.
Enrique felt even more heartbroken; he didn't expect this. The more he compared, the more regretful and sad he felt.
"I've seen her heartlessness again." He closed his eyes and said, "I don't want to see her."
When Elizabeth and the crew got to the hospital, they saw Kevin sitting at the entrance, looking out of it.
Seeing them, Kevin forced a smile and said, "Hi, everyone."
Brenda was the first to speak, asking with fake concern, "Kevin, how's Enrique doing?"
Kevin looked at Brenda's face, which seemed genuinely worried. She was quite the actress. But he didn't buy it; where was she earlier?
His smile vanished, and he said coldly, "Cut the act, he won't die now."
Brenda froze, staring at Kevin in disbelief. She didn't expect him to say that.
She felt wronged and started crying like she always did, "Kevin, what do you mean by that? I'm so worried about Enrique, hoping he'll be okay, and you're blaming me?"
Her tears used to be her weapon; whenever she cried, her brothers would soften and comfort her.
But Kevin wasn't the same Kevin anymore. He used to feel sorry and want to comfort her when she cried. Now, Kevin just felt annoyed by her constant crying. He wondered how they had put up with it before.
His face darkened, saying, "Enrique appreciates your good intentions and thanks you. But this is a hospital; your sobbing is bad juju. He's still kickin'; folks might start thinkin' he's six feet under. If you want to cry, please leave. Enrique can't handle your tears."
The doctor had said earlier that Enrique's injuries were severe but not life-threatening, so he dared to say this. But he was also telling the truth; Brenda crying as soon as she arrived was really inauspicious.
