Chapter 36

Nancy got up to answer the knock at the door.

When she opened it, there stood Eugene. "Eugene, what are you doing here?"

Eugene peered inside. "I'm looking for Elizabeth."

Elizabeth walked over. "What's up?"

"Kevin's really sick. He's throwing up and has diarrhea. He wants to see you," Eugene said.

Elizabeth raised an eyebrow. "Is he dying or something? Why does he need me?"

Eugene looked shocked. "How can you say that?"

Kevin was her brother, but she seemed so indifferent.

Elizabeth shrugged. "What do you want me to say? I don't feel like seeing him, that's all."

She started to close the door.

Eugene quickly pushed it back open. "Elizabeth, whatever issues you two have, now's not the time. Kevin said you could find the medicine. He's really suffering. Please help him."

Elizabeth sneered. "It's dark out. You expect me to go find medicine now? If something happens to me, will you take responsibility? Is my life that worthless to you?"

Eugene was taken aback by her cold stare.

He quickly shook his head. "No, of course not. I know you're capable. I'll go with you."

Maybe this could help mend their strained relationship.

"Elizabeth, can you really let him suffer all night?" he added.

Kevin was at his limit and wanted Elizabeth's help, but his pride wouldn't let him ask again.

So Eugene took it upon himself to find her.

He genuinely wanted to help Kevin, but he also wanted to see if Elizabeth still cared about her brother.
He was worried Elizabeth might really be that heartless.

Elizabeth said firmly, "Why wouldn't I be? I have nothing to do with him anymore. If he's sick, he should see a doctor. I'm not getting involved. There's a clinic in the village; take him there."

With that, she slammed the door, leaving Eugene bewildered outside.

Eugene hadn't expected Elizabeth to truly disregard Kevin.

It was dark, but with Elizabeth's skills, finding medicine was possible.

Yet she refused.

He felt a bit panicked.

If she could be this way towards her own brother, what about him, her ex-boyfriend?

Had Elizabeth really hardened her heart to abandon them?

Eugene stood at the door, wanting to knock again, but he knew Elizabeth's nature.

If she didn't want to do something, no one could force her.

So he turned and went back to their room.

Kevin lay on the bed, pale and clutching his stomach.

Seeing Eugene come in, he quickly asked, "What did Elizabeth say?"

Eugene shook his head. "She said she won't help."

Kevin's face showed deep disappointment.

He took a deep breath. "I'm in this state, and she can still ignore me."

For a moment, he felt utterly miserable.

Eugene sighed. "I think she's serious this time. She's really decided to cut ties with you all."

Kevin pressed his lips together. "Just for those trivial matters, is it worth it? We didn't mistreat her!"

He was genuinely happy that Elizabeth could be found and brought back. Over the past year, he had grown closer to Elizabeth. She had been quite kind to him, and he knew that Elizabeth cared about them. But now, could she really just abandon her feelings for her siblings so easily? How did things come to this?

Eugene saw the disappointment and disbelief on Kevin's face, and he felt a pang of discomfort himself. He couldn't help but wonder, if he were the one sick and needing to go into the mountains for medicine, would Elizabeth help him? He had always believed she wouldn't abandon him, but now he wasn't so sure.

Kevin started feeling unwell again and rushed out to vomit. When he returned, Eugene suggested, "I'll ask Arthur's team to take you to the village clinic."

Just then, Brenda walked in with a cup of hot water. "Right," she said. "Kevin, let me take you to the village clinic."

She knew Eugene had gone to ask Elizabeth for help. She didn't want to openly oppose it, as it would seem like she didn't want Kevin to get better. But deep down, she didn't want Elizabeth to intervene. As expected, Elizabeth was now heartless and didn't care about Kevin. This way, Kevin wouldn't have to think about her anymore, right?

Kevin was feeling so miserable that he could only nod in agreement. The show's crew quickly arrived and took him to the village clinic for an injection. Brenda looked at Kevin and said, "Kevin, I'll stay here with you."

Kevin shook his head. "No need. You've had a long day; go back and rest."

Brenda put on a worried expression. "But I'm worried about you."

Kevin gave her a reassuring look. "The show's crew is here; I'll be fine. You need to rest well tonight so you can be energetic for the live broadcast tomorrow."

Brenda didn't really want to stay; the place was filled with the cheap smell of disinfectant, which made her uncomfortable. Plus, she was exhausted from the day and wanted a good night's sleep. But she couldn't just leave outright, so she pretended to want to stay. She knew Kevin cared about her and wouldn't let her stay.

After he spoke, she reluctantly said, "Alright, I'll go back then. Call me if you need anything."

Kevin nodded. "Okay."

Brenda tucked him in. "Goodnight, Kevin."

Kevin forced a smile. "Goodnight, Brenda."

Watching Brenda leave, Kevin couldn't help but wonder. If they hadn't had a falling out, and it was Elizabeth here today, would she have stayed to take care of him?

As soon as he closed his eyes, memories of the past flooded in. His stomach had always been weak, and there were times when he had bouts of vomiting and diarrhea. Elizabeth would take time off work to stay by his side and take care of him. She would even make special herbal concoctions and soup for him. She would remind him not to eat cold foods and to eat regularly. During that time, she would even prepare meals and bring them to his office every day.

He had enjoyed his sister's care and the meals she brought, though occasionally he would get impatient and ask why she was so controlling. Now, he couldn't help but miss those times immensely.

Lying there alone with an IV drip, Kevin felt incredibly vulnerable. He also wondered, did Brenda really care about him as a brother? She was aware that he had diarrhea from eating a sandwich in the morning, yet she still served him fish with a pungent odor for dinner. Was she genuinely that thoughtless, or did she assume he wouldn't decline?

Kevin shook his head, trying to stop his thoughts. He kept telling himself that Brenda was kind-hearted; she couldn't have done it on purpose.
