Chapter 399 Both Had Their Thoughts
Elizabeth had this honest look on her face. She went on, "Even though I can't stand Mrs. Clark, and she and Mrs. Baker teamed up to mess with me, I'd never sink to their level and spread lies or wrong someone." She really couldn't bring herself to do that kind of thing. By saying this, she wanted Phineas and Maria to see Betty for who she really was.
Phineas was taken aback. "What? She even teamed up with Mrs. Baker to hurt you?" he asked, totally shocked.
Before Elizabeth could answer, Zephyr jumped in. "Yeah, Grandpa. Betty's gone off the deep end. She didn't just go after me; she targeted Elizabeth too." He laid out everything Elizabeth had told them before.
Phineas's face fell with disappointment. He always knew Betty was selfish, but this was a new low. He let out a heavy sigh. "We really dropped the ball raising her. I never thought she'd turn out like this."
Maria, fuming with anger, added, "Brenda's always been trouble. I told Betty ages ago to cut her off, but she wouldn't listen. And that Mrs. Baker—Betty used to be tight with her, but now they're at each other's throats. I don't even know what to say about her."
Betty had it all: the Anderson family's support and a responsible husband like Paul. Without those, who knew where she'd be? Right now, Maria felt a deep sense of disappointment and coldness toward Betty. Betty's scheming against Zephyr had crossed the line.
Phineas felt the same. All he wanted was a peaceful home and harmony among his kids. But what had Betty done? In front of Elizabeth and Zephyr, he felt ashamed.
Hearing Maria's complaints, Arnold jumped in with a bitter look, "Exactly, Grandma. And Mom yells at us every day because of Brenda. She even threatens to disown us if we try to get rid of Brenda." Richard and Kevin backed him up, painting a clear picture of family chaos.
This revelation hit Phineas and Maria hard. The kids' resentment toward Betty was growing, widening the family rift. Was Brenda really worth all this drama? They couldn't figure out what was going on in Betty's head. Had Brenda cast a spell on her?
Maria tried to comfort her grandsons. "Your mom must be under some kind of spell. Once we get rid of Brenda, things might get better."
But Richard wasn't so sure. He sighed, "To Mom, Brenda is her real treasure. We're just second-class. I don't think things will change unless you step in, Grandma." He wanted Maria to deal with Betty and set her straight.
Maria, with a determined look, said, "I'll call your mom over right now. Today, no matter what, I'm making her send Brenda away. Otherwise, she can forget about recognizing us." It was clear that Leon's family had had enough of Betty. They decided to cut ties with her. If it were any other issue, Maria might be able to smooth things over. But in Zephyr's case, she was too furious with Betty to hold back.
Phineas nodded. "Yeah, call her over right now. We've got the proof; she can't deny it."
Maria agreed and dialed Betty's number.
Over at the Clark household, Betty was chilling while Brenda gave her a shoulder massage. When Maria's call came through, Betty answered, not expecting the cold, stern demand to get to the hospital immediately. Maria gave her a half-hour deadline, or else Betty would be cut off from the Anderson family for good. Betty had never heard Maria sound so harsh. Before she could ask why, Maria hung up.
Panic hit Betty hard. She muttered, "Your grandma called, demanding I go to the hospital right away. Do you think they found out about Zephyr?" Her voice was shaky; Maria's tone had really rattled her.
Brenda thought for a moment and tried to calm her down. "It's possible. Mom, don't freak out. If it's really out in the open, just tell them you'll find a way to help Zephyr get rid of the poison bug. That diviner said they could help by bringing in a more powerful diviner from the association, who will help Zephyr soon. As long as it gets fixed, I'm sure Grandma and the others won't blame you."
Their plan was for the Anderson family to find out about this. Then Betty would step in and introduce the diviner to them. That way, they could naturally get their reward.
Hearing Brenda's reassurance, Betty started to calm down. Yeah, she wasn't refusing to save Zephyr. She was just temporarily transferring the poison bug to Zephyr's body, and then she'd bring in the diviner to remove it. She believed her family would understand. She looked at Brenda. "Are you coming with me?"
Brenda hesitated. "I better not go. They might not want to see me." She couldn't transfer the poison; it was the diviner she introduced. The Anderson family wasn't stupid; they'd definitely think she instigated Betty.
So, if Brenda went to the hospital, it would she would become the target of their anger. She didn't want to go and get chewed out by the Anderson family.
Betty thought it made sense. She nodded. "Alright, I'll go by myself then." It would have been better if Brenda hadn't gone; she could have pushed a lot of things onto Brenda.
Both had their own thoughts. Brenda saw Betty off, continuously persuading her along the way. She kept saying that the diviner she knew was very powerful. If Amy sent an evil wizard against Betty again, that diviner could handle it.
Brenda was scared the Anderson family would convince Betty to send her away and abandon her. So she needed to make Betty understand her value. For Betty's own safety, and for her considerate daughter, Betty had to firmly reject the Anderson family's demands.
