Chapter 310 Defeating You
Raymond had it all figured out. He remarked, "With Brenda's attitude, they definitely asked who the top dogs were first. Found out the last two champs were short a couple of players, so they hit them up. They ain't short on cash and don't care about the prize, but they sure as hell wanna beat us to the championship."
Brenda's little tricks were way too obvious.
Natalie chimed in, "Yeah, makes sense. If they wanna build a team, they gotta go for the strong ones to have a shot at winning."
Elizabeth grinned and said, "If they wanna screw themselves over, let 'em."
From the looks of it, those four were a tough bunch to deal with. One of them even had this intense, villainous vibe.
Brenda dragging Enrique to them was just asking for trouble. But it was Brenda's call, and she'd have to deal with the fallout.
Everyone else was on the same page. They then got busy prepping.
Folks in the live stream were giving props to Raymond and the gang for seeing right through Brenda, 'cause everything Raymond said was spot on.
Before putting a team together, Brenda had been snooping around about the strong teams. Someone even gave her a heads-up, but Brenda didn't listen and just went for the top dogs.
This showed they were way too eager. So, not many people had high hopes for the siblings.
Once all the teams registered and got the green light, the Soule event organizers announced there were sixteen teams in the mix.
Drawing lots to pick opponents and moving up to the final showdown was all about skill and luck. Drawing a weaker team meant you could keep advancing, but facing a strong one could knock you out in the first round.
Elizabeth's team had her draw the lots.
In the first round, Elizabeth pulled a team that wasn't all that strong. This was just what Elizabeth expected. Since Brenda wanted to switch teams, they'd definitely meet at the end.
When the competition kicked off, they didn't rush to win but focused on getting their team coordination down. If there were any issues, Elizabeth and Raymond would call them out for fixes. So, after winning the first match, the team's coordination was on point.
Then came the round of sixteen to eight, where Elizabeth's group, which was pretty solid, got drawn. Just like before, they kept honing their teamwork. Without much hassle, they bagged the win.
Next up were the quarter-finals and semi-finals, where the teams they drew were pretty tough. But the six's coordination got better, and with Zachary, Elizabeth, and Raymond's mad skills, they won back-to-back matches.
Brenda's team also kept advancing. Their four teammates were no joke, especially since they used some sneaky moves that went beyond the usual rules. After a few matches, a lot of their opponents were banged up.
In the last match, Brenda even hurt an opponent while going for the ball. But it looked like a regular accident.
However, Elizabeth, who was watching, saw that Brenda's move was totally on purpose. By hanging with the wrong crowd, Brenda's nasty side had fully come out.
As expected, the last two teams standing were Brenda's and Elizabeth's.
The live stream audience was hyped. They couldn't believe how both teams had such good luck, dodging each other until the final.
In the resting area.
Dennis said, "Man, we got lucky not running into them earlier. From their matches, they look tougher than the last couple of years."
Gotta admit, even though Brenda looked all delicate and stuff, she was a beast in Soule. And Enrique? He had some serious skills too. Their team was no joke.
Natalie grinned and said, "What a trip that our teams dodged each other till the final."
But honestly, she didn't buy it was just luck; someone had to be pulling strings behind the scenes.
Elizabeth figured the same. Brenda's backer had to be pretty powerful. They not only tampered with the variety show but also the competition. This meant there was a big conspiracy with a strong network behind it.
She glanced off into the distance, towards the Divination Association's HQ. If their turf could be infiltrated, it meant Brenda had some serious connections inside, probably high-ranking ones.
After the show, she had to pay the Divination Association a visit.
Meanwhile, in the other resting area.
Enrique thought it was just a coincidence too. Facing Elizabeth, he felt all kinds of mixed up. If he had to go for the ball against her, should he go all out or hold back?
After mulling it over, he decided to hold back. After all, Elizabeth was his sister; he couldn't go too hard on her.
Brenda, on the other hand, was pumped. She was super hyped for the match. This was her first real showdown with Elizabeth, and she couldn't afford to lose.
She was even thinking, 'Should I break Elizabeth's limbs or mess up her face?' The more she thought about it, the more amped she got.
After both teams chilled for half an hour, they hit the field with the gear and mallets from the organizers.
The final match was a full sixty minutes, split into two halves of thirty minutes each, with a switch of sides at halftime.
As they stepped onto the field, the crowd went wild.
"Elizabeth, Raymond!"
"Elizabeth, we love you!"
"Elizabeth, go get 'em!"
"Elizabeth, take the lead."
"Natalie, you got this!"
"Zachary, I love you!"
"Zachary, go for it!"
The Divination Association's HQ was in Aevum City, where a ton of diviners lived and hung out. So every Soule competition had a bunch of diviners watching. This time, some of them were Elizabeth's fans.
A lot of the divination masters were totally shocked to see Zachary on the field. As Xavier's top student, his mad skills and frequent disappearing acts were legendary. They couldn't wrap their heads around why he'd join in on this. Admiring Zachary's skills and respecting Xavier, they cheered too.
A ton of Elizabeth and Raymond's fans showed up, making two-thirds of the stands go nuts for Elizabeth's team.
This massive support made it tough for Brenda and her crew to keep their cool. Brenda was fuming inside, 'This is a Soule match, not a fan concert. Why are these fans screaming so loud?'
But it was all good. After she beat Elizabeth, she'd shut these fans up. Maybe then, people would start ditching Elizabeth. As long as Elizabeth lost fans and got trashed, her Generational Blessings would tank, and hers would skyrocket.
Brenda looked at Elizabeth, all fired up, and declared, "Elizabeth, we're gonna give it our all to beat you."
