Chapter 25
Kevin realized arguing with these two was pointless. Every time, he ended up losing and it drove him nuts. What really got under his skin was how Elizabeth always took Raymond's side, ignoring him, her own brother. The more it happened, the more uncomfortable he felt. Elizabeth was his sister, not Raymond's. His glares at Raymond grew more intense.
The last fight over the spots had already caused a rift between Elizabeth and them. Was Raymond trying to steal his sister away? Kevin glanced at Elizabeth and saw her indifferent look. He thought, this can't go on. He couldn't let Raymond take Elizabeth away; he had to find a way to bring her back.
As for his four brothers' advice about opposing Elizabeth to make her realize her mistakes, he decided to put that aside for now. After all, letting her have her way once didn't seem like a big deal. To ease the tension and not let Raymond win, he softened his tone and asked Elizabeth, "Are you cooking this afternoon?"
Even though Brenda had been learning to cook, Elizabeth's cooking was still way better. Elizabeth glanced at him and said, "Someone's treating us to a meal, so I don't need to."
Kevin fell silent. He had planned to use Elizabeth cooking as a chance to mend their relationship. Raymond noticed Kevin's unusual attitude towards Elizabeth. And Elizabeth, usually easygoing, seemed particularly antagonistic towards Kevin and his sister. Suddenly, Raymond remembered something he'd heard about the Clark family. They had found their biological daughter but hadn't revealed her identity or taken her to any social events. Instead, they continued to treat their adopted daughter as their own.
Reflecting on the past few days, Raymond pieced it together: Elizabeth was probably the Clark family's long-lost biological daughter. But she'd been wronged by them, which explained why she didn't want to engage with Kevin and his sister, maybe even resented them.
Raymond felt like he'd cracked the case. With this realization, Kevin and his sister seemed even more irritating. Elizabeth didn't want to deal with them, so why did they keep trying to get close to her? It was seriously annoying.
He looked at Kevin with a smug grin and said, "Don't worry, when we eat later, I'll take a picture and post it in the group. So you can see it to your heart's content."
Kevin stayed silent. Who cared about what they were eating? He replied with a sarcastic smile, "Well, thank you very much."
Raymond smirked, "You're welcome. Since you like it, I'll make sure to satisfy you more often."
Kevin fell silent. Raymond was as annoying as ever. He declined, "There's no need for that. It's too much trouble."
Raymond cheerfully responded, "No problem, I don't mind the trouble."
Kevin remained silent, thinking, ‘I find you annoying. Can't you see that?’ Because it was a live broadcast, he held back from voicing his thoughts, though he felt both angry and frustrated.
Elizabeth, seeing Kevin's suppressed anger, thought he deserved it and found Raymond even more agreeable.
Just as she finished arranging the food on the table and placing the meat in a basket to lower into the well, Robert personally came over to invite the four of Elizabeth’s team to his house for a meal. To thank Elizabeth and Raymond for saving lives, Robert's family had specially gone to town to buy ingredients and prepared a sumptuous meal.
Before they began the meal, Raymond captured a snapshot on his phone and shared it in their group chat.Meanwhile, Brenda, eager to showcase her skills, took charge of washing and chopping the vegetables herself. She dedicated considerable effort to crafting four dishes and a soup, arranging them meticulously to enhance their visual appeal.
The other three each took a bite. While the food was edible, the taste was pretty mediocre. Lisa thought it wasn't even as good as the meals she had on set during workdays. Just then, their phones chimed with notifications. They checked to see a photo Raymond had posted in the group. The dishes on the table, though not as fancy as restaurant fare, looked plentiful and appetizing. Suddenly, none of the four, including Brenda, had much of an appetite. But having done a lot of work during the day, they were hungry and continued eating.
After a while, more notifications sounded. It was Raymond's selfie, showing him gnawing on a chicken leg. He had also sent a message: [This chicken leg is so fragrant, amazing!] A moment later, he posted a picture of a plate of shrimp and ribs.
Raymond: [Not only is this river fish fragrant, but it also has a sweet freshness, yummy!]
Raymond: [First time trying herb ribs, so tasty!]
Elizabeth: [I also love this shrimp, so fresh!]
Nancy: [I like the herb ribs, so fragrant.]
Ronald: [Then I prefer the ham, it's more delicious than any I've had before.]
The four of them on this end fell silent, feeling an urge to curse. Kevin couldn't hold back and said, "I want to block Raymond." Eugene chimed in, "I kind of want to as well." Brenda and Lisa didn't say anything, just smiled. Raymond was the most popular star, and saying such things during a live broadcast could get them scolded by his fans.
Kevin reached out to block him, but Brenda persuaded him, "Kevin, don't. If something comes up, blocking him would make it hard to contact. Besides, Raymond posting food pictures every day is kind of nice to see." She said this only to win the favor of Raymond's fans in the live broadcast.
Hearing her, Kevin stopped what he was doing. Though he wasn't happy about it, he habitually showed a doting smile, "Alright, I listen to you."
Lisa, while eating, pursed her lips. One was hypocritical, and the other was overly indulgent. If she were to date Kevin, who would be more important to him, his girlfriend or his sister Brenda? If both his girlfriend and Brenda fell into the water at the same time, he would definitely jump in to save Brenda. Thinking this, her affection for Kevin waned considerably.
Eugene, knowing the relationship between Kevin and Brenda, didn't think much of it. In the live chat, fans who shipped the sibling relationship were all exclaiming how sweet and doting it was.
On the other hand, Raymond's fans didn't seem to warm up to Brenda at all.
[Go ahead and block him. My Raymond has never been afraid of being blocked.]
[With Raymond's mouth, who knows how many people have blocked him. One more Kevin doesn't matter.]
[So there's really no need for Brenda to plead on his behalf.]
The chat then took a different direction.
[Suddenly realized, Kevin dotes on Brenda a lot, but Brenda doesn't seem to care much about Kevin.]
[I've noticed for a while, Kevin and Raymond don't get along, yet Brenda doesn't help Kevin.]
[The key is, Brenda has been dissed by Raymond several times before.]
[If it were me, I wouldn't be so generous after being dissed like that.]
[So is Brenda truly generous, or just too hypocritical?]
[I feel bad for Kev. He dotes on Brenda so much, but she only consumes his affection without being on his side.]
[Kev helps her with everything, but she never stands up for him.]
[She always wants to speak for others, trying to appear kind.]
[This is clearly hypocrisy.]
Elizabeth had previously anonymously paid to hire netizens to post such comments at the right moments. Sure enough, the hired netizens seized the opportunity to comment, and Kevin's fans increasingly felt this was true. As a result, many of Kevin's fans began to feel dissatisfied with Brenda.
