Chapter 74 You Win Some, You Lose Some

Rebecca was speechless.

She chuckled, "Fine, I won't go back. It's not like I enjoy being with you anyway."

She added, "But Amy, remember, Janet Baker is still above you. You can't tell me not to return. Wait until you're the sole mistress, then try kicking me out."

Amy was shaking with anger. "You're outrageous."

She hung up.

A daughter who teamed up with outsiders to humiliate her mom was better off not coming back to avoid more drama.

Hearing the busy tone, Rebecca shrugged. "Mrs. Baker's been pampered for years. Her mental resilience is shot. She can't even handle this."

Elizabeth laughed. "That's why she and Mrs. Clark are such good friends; they're the same."

That day, when she retorted a few words, Mrs. Clark had also looked like she couldn't handle it.

"Yeah, it's funny how buddies usually vibe on the same wavelength," Rebecca nodded. "Honestly, if I hadn't sneaked that DNA test, I'd wonder if Eugene and I were really her offspring. She's all about Percy."

Rebecca's tone turned acerbic. "Back when she was carrying us, it was all 'oopsie daisy.' Supposedly an accidental pregnancy. She wanted to scrap it, but some doc threw a wrench in that gear, yammering about health risks. That's the sole reason we saw daylight. Post-birth, we were as welcome as a skunk at a picnic."

"I got shipped off to her parents, my brother our father's pops. Those crusty relics snatched my gear and toys, chucked 'em at my cousins, and made my life hell," Rebecca recalled, a bitter edge to her memories.

"I tried to reason with her, hoping to head back home. Instead, I got an earful for 'disrespecting' my grandparents and was slammed for slandering them," Rebecca recounted bitterly. "She sided with her clan and barred me from leaving."

"Later, I found out that as long as I stayed there, the Baker family would give her family more benefits. If I hadn't cried to my other grandfather, who then took me in, I don't know how badly I would've been bullied." She then added helplessly, "Only Eugene still craves motherly love and lets himself be controlled by her."

She had long seen through that hypocritical and biased mother.

Elizabeth nodded. "I used to wonder why Amy was so biased towards Percy and so cold to you and Eugene. But after I returned to the Clark family, I understood this kind of bias. They favor Brenda and belittle me, their biological daughter, just like your biased mother."

Elizabeth shrugged. "We were just unlucky to encounter such situations."

Honestly, these two pals were unlucky in a similar way. This kind of messed-up family dynamic wasn't common, but fate dealt them this hand.

Yet, if not for this shared hardship, they wouldn't have crossed paths and forged this strong bond. As the saying goes, 'you win some, you lose some.'

Elizabeth continued, "If they don't love us, we can love ourselves."

Having lived another life, she truly didn't care about these things anymore.

Rebecca laughed. "Yes, we can love ourselves."

She said to Elizabeth with some relief, "It's a good thing you broke up with Eugene. Otherwise, dealing with such a troublesome mother-in-law would be really unfortunate."

Elizabeth blinked. "Hearing you say that, I suddenly feel like I made the right decision."

Then they both laughed out loud.

Elizabeth raised her glass. "Let's not dwell on those bad people and things. What are your plans now that you're back? I've started a studio and need someone to manage it when I'm busy with shows or acting. Interested in investing?"

Rebecca, who studied management, was very capable.

"Sure, I came back to find you anyway." She clinked glasses with Elizabeth. "I was just looking for something to do, and you handed it to me."

She added with a hint of self-mockery, "I originally studied management for Hubert, but now I'm using it for myself."

Elizabeth laughed. "Isn't that better? What you learn is yours. Let's grow the studio big and strong. You can stand proudly in front of Hubert and tell him to get lost. How satisfying."

From her perspective, Rebecca deserved better.

Hubert must have feelings for Rebecca; otherwise, he wouldn't have let her chase him for so many years. But he was like a cold stone, with a scheming assistant by his side. He was worse than Eugene and should be thrown into the trash together.

Rebecca thought about Elizabeth's words and laughed. "Honestly, that would be satisfying. Then I'll tell him to get lost and let him play with his assistant."

She drank a glass of wine. "I won't chase after Hubert anymore. I'm going to focus on my career."

Elizabeth also drank. "Yes, let's focus on our careers together!"

The two happily drank, forgetting all their troubles.

Meanwhile, online matters continued.

Eugene and Brenda were being heavily criticized, and many fans unfollowed them.

At the Clark's, Kevin and Brenda were sent back by the show's car. Kevin eventually compromised after Brenda cried. He suppressed his anger and coaxed her until she was appeased.

Now Brenda returned home with red and swollen eyes. Paul wasn't there, but Betty and the four Clark brothers were waiting in the living room.

As soon as Brenda walked in, she softly greeted, "Mom, Loren, Richard, Arnold, Enrique!"

Enrique saw Brenda's swollen eyes and immediately stood up, looking distressed. "Brenda, what happened? Who bullied you?"

Hearing Enrique's words, Brenda's grievances resurfaced. She threw herself into Enrique's arms and cried, "I was framed and now many people are scolding me online."

Who framed her? Naturally, it was Elizabeth. She believed her brothers would investigate.

Then she complained, "Eugene and I are innocent, but Kevin not only didn't comfort me, he didn't believe me and scolded me."

Enrique hugged her and comforted, "Brenda, don't be sad. Loren and Richard are already looking for the mastermind behind the online attacks. Once we find out who it is, we'll avenge you."

Then he glared at Kevin. "Kevin is an idiot. Why bother with him? I'll beat him up later to vent your anger."

Kevin rubbed his nose. "I was just angry after seeing the online stuff."

Brenda, leaning in Enrique's arms, pouted at Kevin. "Kevin is bad."

Kevin clasped his hands together and pleaded, "Yes, yes, I'm bad. Brenda, please let it go."

He was really afraid of her.

Enrique, holding Brenda's shoulder, sat on the sofa. Arnold also came over, hugging Brenda's waist, and softly comforting her. Loren and Richard didn't come over but kept comforting Brenda verbally. They also promised her that they wouldn't let the person who harmed her go.

Betty watched them and couldn't help but frown. Brenda being hugged by Arnold and Enrique, one on each side, didn't look like the behavior between adult siblings. The five sons centered around Brenda, constantly comforting and coaxing her. It didn't look like they were comforting a sister, but more like a lover.
