Chapter 472 Betty in the Past Life Dream (2)
The kidnapper claimed he had kidnapped both Brenda and Elizabeth and demanded they bring the ransom.
In the dream, Paul was on a business trip abroad. Betty called Paul, who instructed her to take their sons and rescue them. He transferred the ransom money to Betty's account and sought help from his friends.
Betty and the Clark brothers didn't hesitate and took the money to the designated place. The kidnapper had warned them that he was always watching their house and if they dared to call the police, he would kill both of them. So, the Clark Family didn't dare to involve the police, thinking they would spend the money to save them first.
When Eugene found out, he went along too. When they arrived, Betty saw Brenda and Elizabeth tied up with ropes, and the kidnapper holding a gun.
The negotiation began. They wanted to save Brenda and Elizabeth, so they kept negotiating with the kidnapper, offering him money to release them. But the kidnapper suddenly demanded they make a choice. They had to choose between Brenda and Elizabeth, deciding who to release first. The kidnapper would keep the other as a hostage and release her only after he safely left with the money.
The Clark Family didn't expect the kidnapper to make such a demand. However, from the kidnapper's perspective, this demand was indeed reasonable. Then Brenda cried and said they should choose Elizabeth. She said that although Elizabeth knew some combat skills, Elizabeth was Betty's biological daughter. So they should save Elizabeth first, and she volunteered to stay as a hostage.
From the dream's perspective, Betty naturally realized Brenda was saying this on purpose. Brenda was using a reverse strategy, wanting them to choose her and abandon Elizabeth. It was fake, but they believed it.
Elizabeth said nothing, just looked at them calmly. There was actually a hint of hope in her eyes, waiting for their choice. In the dream, this comparison made the Clark Family feel that Brenda was more considerate and thoughtful. Brenda's words also reminded them. When Elizabeth was with the Clark Family, she would get up almost every morning to practice combat, saying it was taught by her mentor. She had even knocked down bad guys and saved a girl being bullied by them on the street. And the girl's parents came to thank her.
In their hearts, Elizabeth was strong and not delicate. But Brenda had been pampered since childhood, crying for comfort even if she cut her finger. Moreover, they had spoiled Brenda for so many years, their hearts were indeed biased.
They thought Elizabeth was more suitable to be a hostage than Brenda, so they chose Brenda without hesitation. Eugene followed suit and chose Brenda as well. Betty then saw the glimmer of hope in Elizabeth's eyes completely shatter, and she gave a self-deprecating smile. It was an expression that said, "I knew it," as if she had already anticipated this outcome. Her entire demeanor exuded sorrow and determination, as though she had resolved herself to some decision.
Betty's heart ached as she witnessed this scene. She also noticed the touched expression on Brenda's face, but there was a hint of smugness in her eyes. Clearly, Brenda's previous words were insincere; otherwise, she could have volunteered to be the hostage again.
Then the kidnapper released Brenda as agreed. When Brenda reached their side, Elizabeth stood up, seemingly trying to find a way to save herself. They all thought the kidnapper would take the money and then escape with Elizabeth. Once he reached a safe place, he would leave her behind. But then, the kidnapper suddenly burst into laughter. He looked at them like they were clowns and said the choice was just to toy with them. He had a terminal illness and couldn't stand seeing such wealthy families. He just wanted to find someone to vent his anger on. But he was a man of his word; he said he would release one, and he did.
Then, catching everyone off guard, the kidnapper quickly turned around and raised his hand to shoot Elizabeth without hesitation. At that moment, Elizabeth had just used a small stone to cut the rope binding her. If the kidnapper hadn't shot so quickly and suddenly, Elizabeth might have had a chance to save herself. The kidnapper hit Elizabeth in a vital spot. As Elizabeth fell, she showed a regretful yet relieved smile. Then she looked at Betty with a cold and desolate gaze and said, "You chose to let me die. I remember that."
Blood trickled from the corner of her mouth as she struggled to speak, her voice both pained and resolute. "Death is good; it repays the debt of birth. From now on, we owe each other nothing, and we have no further relationship."
After saying this, Elizabeth closed her eyes and fell to the ground, losing her young life. Betty couldn't help but scream, "No, Elizabeth!" At the same time, she heard them in the dream shouting Elizabeth's name.
Betty felt like a piece of her heart was missing, hurting terribly. Then she shouted while opening her eyes, "Elizabeth, Elizabeth!"
Then she saw Paul standing in front of her, asking worriedly, "Are you okay?"
Betty realized she was already in tears, feeling like she couldn't breathe. She desperately needed comfort and hugged Paul, crying. "We wronged Elizabeth, we wronged her!" The dream was too real, giving her a feeling as if it had actually happened. She didn't know what they would be like after Elizabeth died. But she only knew that she felt very heartbroken and sad both then and now.
Paul stiffened when she hugged him, initially wanting to push Betty away. But after hearing her words, he stopped.
He couldn't help but ask, "Wronged Elizabeth? Did something happen again these days?" Paul wondered if Betty had caused trouble with Brenda and gone to bother Elizabeth again. Richard and his brothers had similar thoughts.
Betty cried so hard she could barely breathe, but she intermittently told them what she saw in the dream. "It was too real; I felt like it actually happened. Elizabeth died, my biological daughter, because of our choice." Betty had never felt so guilty before; the heartache from the dream carried over to reality.
After hearing Betty's words, Paul and the Clark brothers were all stunned for a moment. They didn't know what to say.
Paul thought for a moment, then patted Betty's back to comfort her, "It's okay, Elizabeth is still alive and well. It's just a dream, don't overthink it." He guessed Betty was deeply affected by Brenda's actions, which led to such a dream.
But Betty shook her head, "No, it felt too real, not just a dream. Everything before matched reality, but now because of that spot, Elizabeth suddenly cut ties with us. I feel there's a connection. Otherwise, with Elizabeth's emotional nature, she wouldn't suddenly make such a decision. Like in the dream, she only started to distance herself and didn't immediately cut ties."
Betty suddenly wanted to hear Elizabeth's voice. She said, "I want to call Elizabeth." Then she went to find her phone, only to remember Brenda had broken it.
She told Paul, "Give me your phone." Seeing her emotional breakdown and guilt toward Elizabeth, Paul thought for a moment and handed her the phone after unlocking it. Betty took the phone and eagerly dialed Elizabeth's number.
