Chapter 376 The Style of Conduct Has Completely Changed
The Divination Association's act of staying quiet played out just like Elizabeth thought it would. Ethan, always used to being in charge and pretty full of himself, didn't care much about what people thought. But he missed the fact that sometimes, public opinion can be a real game-changer.
Sure, the Divination Association had its share of shady top-tier diviners like Brenda's backer, but it also had some good ones.
Elizabeth had heard about two diviners from a decade ago who tracked down a nasty sorcerer planning to hurt thousands with some evil energy setup. Those two gave their lives to save the people, taking the sorcerer down with them.
There were plenty of stories like that. Over the years, the Divination Association had seen its fair share of diviners who sacrificed themselves for the greater good.
So, Elizabeth's strong stance against the Divination Association wasn't just to tick off Ethan; she wanted the whole place to clean up its act. She hoped for a reform that would give the good diviners a better environment to grow and share their knowledge. Since someone decided to take her on directly, she figured it was time to move to the next step.
Meanwhile, over at the special department, Ryan heard about Elizabeth going head-to-head with the Divination Association and even stepping down on her own.
He checked it out online and said, "Good thing I looked into Darlene's case when I did. Otherwise, Elizabeth might've come after us like this."
Right after talking to Elizabeth, he dug into Darlene's case and found some real issues. He pushed for an investigation, but someone tried to block him.
Thanks to Elizabeth's heads-up and his own gut feeling, he kept pushing and even got their boss involved. Finally, they got the green light.
They made it to the crematorium just in time to stop Darlene from being cremated. A diviner from their team, who was an expert in this stuff, took a look.
Turned out, Darlene's death was super fishy. She had no life left in her, like she was already dead before the supposed suicide. As for the Generational Blessings, since she was already gone, they couldn't tell if someone had taken them.
Percy, sitting across from him, chuckled and said, "Be confident, drop the 'might'. Elizabeth's bold enough to take on the Divination Association, she could definitely come after us too. But Darlene's case is a big deal. Elizabeth's report was spot on."
He noticed that Elizabeth had been wary of Ethan. She didn't want to engage in direct conflict and was trying to be careful. But now, she was going all out, taking a new approach. It seemed like she had found some new confidence and support, pushing her to confront Ethan head-on. Elizabeth's change gave him a spark of hope, and he was all in to back her up.
Ryan nodded. "Elizabeth's definitely onto something. But we're hitting a wall with the investigation." He frowned and sighed, "I have no idea how to push through and keep it going."
Percy chimed in, "Why not ask Elizabeth for her take? And haven't you always wanted her to join our special department? Now's your chance. She left the Divination Association and wants to take on some of those diviners. She'd be a perfect fit for us. Plus, she could help with Darlene's case."
Elizabeth's desire to confront Ethan made her a great match for their team. Their department was split into two camps: one that protected certain folks in the Divination Association, and another that wanted to shake things up.
Ryan's team was in the latter group. After a lot of back-and-forth, they finally got the green light to look into Darlene's case. Ryan figured Elizabeth roping him into this was all part of her plan.
Ryan's eyes lit up at Percy's suggestion. "You're right. We work with the Divination Association, but we're not their lackeys, and we don't have to bow down to anyone. I'll call Elizabeth right now."
He'd always had a low opinion of some so-called diviners, seeing them as hypocritical and arrogant. Their uncooperative attitude and deliberate roadblocks during investigations only fueled his disdain. So, he didn't hesitate to call Elizabeth.
Elizabeth picked up quickly. "Ryan, any updates on Darlene's case?"
Ryan gave a wry smile. "Not yet. We're stuck, and if we can't find a way through, the investigation's gonna stall. I was hoping you might have some advice."
Elizabeth wasn't shocked they were hitting snags. Ethan was always super careful, and he probably did some serious cleanup on Darlene's case.
She asked, "What kind of challenges are you facing?"
She had asked Ryan to look into Darlene partly to see if the whole special department was compromised. It now seemed like not everyone was shady.
They were probably up against the bad apples; otherwise, the investigation wouldn't have gotten the go-ahead.
Ryan explained, "We checked the surveillance and saw that Darlene hadn't left her house for days before the supposed suicide, and no one visited her either. Plus, there were no signs of any spells being used in her home, so the trail went cold."
He added, sounding frustrated, "It looks like any evidence was deliberately wiped clean. We don't know where to start or how to keep digging."
Elizabeth didn't buy that Darlene hadn't left her house. She was probably taken out, and any traces of her leaving were erased.
She thought for a moment and asked, "Can I see the surveillance footage you have?" Whether it was tampered with, she could tell. She believed the surveillance footage was the key to cracking this case.
