Chapter 426 How Did Elizabeth Do It?
Then, Aaron started making this weird, rhythmic noise. Richard and the gang froze, their faces going pale as the centipede suddenly sprouted these see-through wings and took off with a creepy buzz.
They all felt this gut-wrenching sense of danger. They weren't sure if the gem tokens Elizabeth had given them would do squat against this flying nightmare. Running wasn't an option; they were stuck, cursing Amy for getting them into this mess.
Out of nowhere, a flash of fire lit up the scene. A burning spell scroll flew through the air and nailed the centipede mid-flight. The thing let out a blood-curdling scream and crashed to the ground.
Aaron just stood there, stunned. That centipede, which his mentor had raised with his own blood and was strong enough to take on a second-tier peak sorcerer, got taken down by one spell scroll?
Aaron freaked out and was about to rush over when a red light flashed across the ground, and the centipede vanished.
Nobody knew what the red light was or how the centipede disappeared. Their eyes followed the light and saw Elizabeth stepping out of the shadows. The red light zipped into the bag she was carrying.
Because the little snake was too fast, no one except Elizabeth saw it.
Turned out, the red light was actually a small snake with the centipede in its mouth. It slithered into Elizabeth's bag, opened wide, and slowly swallowed the centipede.
The centipede, badly hurt by Elizabeth's spell scroll, had its energy mark from the evil wizard wiped out. So, the snake easily overpowered it.
No matter how much the centipede struggled, it ended up as the snake's snack. The snake found the centipede tastier and more energizing than the stone.
Even though the bugs outside didn't seem as yummy as the centipede, the snake still wanted more. It decided to ask Elizabeth for more later.
"Elizabeth!" Raymond and the others called out, relieved. Then they quickly switched to worry, "Elizabeth, he's here for you! Be careful!"
The five guys finally felt a bit safer seeing Elizabeth. Sure, she had a sharp tongue and could be ruthless, but she was reliable and made them feel secure. With her around, they should be okay, right? After all, the centipede looked scary but was easily taken care of by her spell scroll.
Aaron's eyes narrowed as he looked at Elizabeth. "How are you so strong?"
Back in Aevum City, Elizabeth had handled a group of people trying to intercept her.
But Ethan had told him that Elizabeth's strength came from the magical items Wayne gave her. If Aaron could borrow some good stuff from his mentor, dealing with Elizabeth would be a breeze.
So, to play it safe, Aaron not only brought his own carefully raised venomous insect but also borrowed this powerful little centipede from his mentor.
He never expected that the centipede, nurtured by his mentor, would be taken down so quickly by Elizabeth. What freaked him out even more was that he couldn't sense the centipede anymore. It was probably dead. How the heck did Elizabeth pull that off?
Besides the panic, Aaron's first thought was that he'd been duped. Ethan had tricked him.
Elizabeth smirked, meeting his gaze with confidence. "The person who sent you had no intention of you coming back alive. They probably kept my real strength a secret from you."
Actually, Ethan didn't know Elizabeth's current strength either. But he definitely knew she was stronger than Aaron. So she figured Ethan planned to use Aaron to kill her, and then she'd have to deal with Aaron or even kill him.
Naturally, this would piss off the powerful evil wizard backing Aaron.
If Aaron got killed, the evil wizard would definitely come for revenge. With Elizabeth's previous strength, she wouldn't have stood a chance against the evil wizard.
Ethan probably thought he could use the evil wizard's power to get rid of her. Even now, as a high-level diviner, facing that evil wizard would be tricky. Injuries would be inevitable.
But seeing through Ethan's scheme, she wasn't about to play along. So she deliberately told Aaron.
Aaron wasn't entirely dumb. He quickly caught on to Ethan's plan. His face darkened. He never expected that after so many collaborations, Ethan would use his life to scheme against Elizabeth.
With Elizabeth's strength, if his mentor came for revenge, it would be a nightmare.
"It was Mrs. Baker who paid me to deal with you. I was just following orders." His voice wavered slightly but held firm as he proposed, "How about this? I promise not to bother you in the future, okay?"
Elizabeth sneered, "This isn't Eldoria, where you can come and go as you please."
She pointed to the Clark brothers and added, "If I hadn't stepped in, they'd be dead."
The Clark brothers' faces changed. Their earlier feeling was right; the centipede was super dangerous. It seemed even the amulet gemstone couldn't stop it.
Realizing the gravity of his actions, Aaron's face twisted with guilt and frustration. "But they didn't die, did they? You even killed my mentor's prized venomous insect. Doesn't that make us even?"
Aaron didn't know how he'd explain this to his mentor when he got back. And it had been a long time since he had bowed his head to anyone. So, if he got the chance in the future, he would definitely seek revenge on Elizabeth.
Elizabeth's cold stare cut through Aaron's bravado. She said icily, "Do you think one lousy insect is worth three lives?"
