Chapter 155 If It Were You, What Would You Think?
After a while, Loren finally reacted.
He didn't expect Michelle to call off their engagement over some online news.
Seeing his face, Betty asked, "Who called?"
Loren didn't hide it. "Michelle. She wants to break off the engagement."
Betty was shocked. "What? How? There aren't any intimate photos of you and Brenda online, right?"
Loren shook his head. "No."
Betty was confused. "Then why does she want to break up? Michelle liked you first, and it was the Cook family who proposed the marriage."
They'd been together for over two years, and both families planned for them to marry next year.
Why would Michelle want to end it now?
Loren was puzzled too. "She yelled at me because of the news online, then said she wanted to break up. But those photos have nothing to do with me!"
Only Richard and Arnold's photos were online.
And he and Brenda weren't as close as his brothers were with her.
Betty thought for a moment. "I need to ask."
The families had a good relationship, and their companies worked together.
If Paul found out Loren got dumped, he'd be furious.
So she called Michelle.
Soon, Michelle answered, "Mrs. Clark!"
Betty tried to sound gentle. "Michelle, I heard from Loren that you want to break up. Did you two fight? If he upset you, just tell me, and I'll handle it."
Michelle replied, "We didn't fight. I just don't want to be with him anymore."
Betty frowned. "Can you tell me why? About the news online, my sons Richard and Arnold didn't handle things well with Brenda."
She explained, "But Loren was never that close to Brenda. Please don't misunderstand."
Michelle was silent for a moment, then said, "Mrs. Clark, since you insist, I'll be honest. I do like Loren, but he's always been cold to me. Every time I came to the Clarks', he and Brenda weren't that intimate, but they were still very close, not like siblings. Every time I tried to talk to Loren, Brenda would find a reason to call him away. Then she'd show off how much Loren doted on her."
Michelle continued angrily, "Twice before, I almost broke up with Loren because of Brenda. Once, I asked Loren to meet a friend with me. He agreed, so I came to the Clarks' to go with him. But Brenda pretended to fall and be in pain in front of Loren. He immediately took her to the hospital, leaving me to meet my friend alone. I had to make up an excuse for him."
She sneered, "And this year on my birthday, I invited many friends. Loren brought Brenda. My friends egged Loren on to kiss me and asked when we'd get married. Brenda suddenly said her stomach hurt. Loren, without hesitation, took her to the hospital, leaving me humiliated in front of my friends."
Michelle asked, "Mrs. Clark, if you were in my shoes, what would you think? Could all these incidents really be coincidences? Every time something happens, Brenda has to call Loren away. They’re siblings, but to outsiders, they might look like lovers. Why doesn’t Elizabeth act like this? When I had a stomachache, Elizabeth brought me medicine. I get along well with Elizabeth, but not with Brenda. Isn’t it because Brenda shamelessly sees Loren as her possession?"
Talking about this made Michelle angry.
She had put up with it twice before because she really liked Loren.
After Elizabeth was forced to leave the Clark family, she felt Loren and his brothers were too biased towards Brenda.
She even advised Loren to recognize who his real sister was.
Elizabeth’s personality was much more likable than Brenda’s.
They got along well in private.
But with Brenda, it was impossible.
At first, because Loren doted on Brenda, she tried to get along with her.
But she found out Brenda was a hypocrite.
Every time Brenda was around, she’d show off her relationship with Loren.
She’d show how much Loren doted on her.
Brenda wanted to highlight that as his fiancée, Michelle wasn’t that important to Loren.
Who could tolerate that?
She was also from a wealthy family and wouldn’t put up with Brenda.
So her relationship with Brenda was obviously bad, which had pissed Betty and Loren.
She argued with Loren countless times because of Brenda.
It made her seem petty.
But there was a big difference between sisters, right?
If Brenda were like Elizabeth, they could get along well too!
Seeing the photos online this time really disgusted her.
When she went to the Clarks', she saw Brenda and the others were close, but not to this extent.
It was imaginable they were this intimate behind the scenes.
Richard, Arnold, and Kevin were exposed, so could Loren and Enrique be any different?
She didn’t believe it.
Her friends advised her that a man like Loren wasn’t worth it.
If they got married, would Brenda call him away with just one phone call whenever something happened?
Elizabeth was forced to leave, so wouldn’t Michelle, as just a marriage alliance partner, be in a worse situation?
The more she thought about it, the more it made sense.
She had the background and looks, so she could find a man better than Loren.
Elizabeth and Eugene grew up together.
But because of Brenda, Elizabeth decisively broke up and threw Eugene away like trash.
Why should she keep a fiancé who was ambiguous with Brenda?
Michelle could also throw Loren away like trash.
So after discussing it with her parents, she called Loren to break up and cancel the engagement.
She originally didn’t want to say much, but Betty called and wouldn’t let it go.
So she laid it all out.
After all, it was her son and Brenda who were embarrassed.
Sure enough, after hearing Michelle’s words, Betty’s face turned grim.
She didn’t know there were so many issues with Brenda in Loren and Michelle’s relationship.
"I can assure you there’s nothing ambiguous between Loren and Brenda," she tried to persuade. "Michelle, I know you’re angry about the news online, but can you calm down and think it over? Have you discussed this with your parents?"
Michelle decisively said, "I’ve already discussed this with my parents, and they agreed. So I’m sorry, Mrs. Clark."
