Chapter 398 Do You Believe Me Now?
Seeing the doc's serious face, Phineas and Maria felt a shiver run down their spines. The doc turned to Leon, looking all grim. "The brain CT scan showed something big," he said, holding up the images. "There's a parasite in Zephyr's brain. You can see it moving around. No wonder he went into shock."
Leon, even though he trusted Elizabeth's gut, had hoped it wouldn't be this bad. He swallowed hard, his voice shaky. "What do we do now?"
The doc replied, "We need to do surgery to get the parasite out. If we don't, who knows what could happen. It's serious. I recommend surgery. Think it over."
Leon nodded, "Alright!" Then, he walked the doc out of the room.
The room got real quiet. Zephyr, feeling everyone's worry, finally spoke up. "With all this evidence, it's clear Elizabeth was right. Betty really did hurt me. Even if Brenda pushed her, I can't forgive that. From now on, Betty's not my aunt."
Zephyr always knew Betty didn't like him much because he hadn't achieved much with his life. Brenda acted nice but secretly looked down on him. He wasn't dumb; he knew their games. Elizabeth, on the other hand, was far more genuine and never looked down on him. She even took him racing with Rebecca. He wasn't a saint; he couldn't forgive Betty for hurting him.
Ruth, tears streaming down her face, agreed. "Betty showed she doesn't see us as family by doing this. If Zephyr can't be cured, how will I go on? I can't see Betty as family anymore. We need to cut ties completely." She shivered, fear in her voice. "If she can hurt Zephyr, who's next? I'm scared."
Leon, determined, said, "I agree. From now on, Betty's not my sister. She hurt Zephyr, and I can't forgive that." They decided to stay far away from Betty.
Linda, struggling to accept it, resisted, "It can't be that serious. Surgery can remove the parasite, right? Brenda must have tricked Betty; Betty wouldn't do this on purpose. Zephyr's not that bad yet, and now you're all cutting ties with Betty? It feels too much."
Ruth, now furious, shot back, "Excuses won't change the facts. If this were your son, would you say the same? If surgery could fix it, why did Betty transfer the parasite to Zephyr? The parasite can hide and be controlled by the one who raised it, something you're ignoring." If Elizabeth hadn't exposed the parasite, the CT scan wouldn't have shown it.
Elizabeth, fed up with Linda's denials, cut in. "Since you think it's no big deal, how about I transfer the parasite from Zephyr to your son? They're related by blood, so it could work." She didn't actually plan to do it—she just wanted to show Linda how hypocritical she was being.
Linda's face turned bright red with anger. "How dare you suggest that? This isn't his problem! If you do that, I won't let it slide." Her outburst showed she was scared of what Elizabeth could do.
Elizabeth smirked, "See? You only downplay others' suffering until it hits close to home."
Ruth chimed in, "No wonder you and Betty get along; you're both heartless. We won't hurt our own family like you would." Ruth's disgust for Linda grew. Usually, their fights were small, but now, Ruth was done putting up with Linda's petty cruelty. Not only did Linda not care about Zephyr, but she also defended Betty. At that moment, Ruth decided she needed to protect Zephyr no matter what.
Linda, looking awkward, said, "I didn't mean it that way. Ruth, you're being too harsh." It was the first time she'd seen Ruth this angry, so she didn't dare push it, especially since Thaddeus still worked for Leon.
Ruth snapped back, "Your words were harsher."
Linda muttered, "Not as harsh as yours. You're supposed to be the elder, but you don't show any leniency."
She'd said stuff like this before, and Ruth had never reacted so strongly. Today, in front of her nephews and Elizabeth, Ruth was making her look bad on purpose, she thought.
Maria, sensing the need to end the argument, snapped, "Shut up, Linda." At a time like this, Linda was still being foolish, making everyone laugh.
Linda was somewhat afraid of Maria, so she didn't dare say anything more, only cursing Maria in her heart for being biased. Clearly, Ruth was also at fault, but Maria only told her to shut up.
Linda gave Thaddeus a look, hoping he'd speak up for her. Thaddeus stayed silent. He thought, 'Linda really doesn't know how to read the room. My parents are angry because of Betty, and their hearts are probably heavy with grief. If I say anything, I'll just be asking for trouble.'
Thaddeus wasn't that dumb, so he pretended not to see. Linda was fuming. She thought, 'This jerk is so weak; I'll deal with you later.'
Elizabeth turned back to Phineas and Maria. "Do you believe me now?"
