Chapter 249 So This Is the Truth
Nicole had been keeping tabs on Elizabeth way before today. Ever since Elizabeth got revealed as the real Clark family daughter on that wild reality show, Nicole had been glued to her every move. Their lives were like a messed-up mirror image of each other.
Seeing Elizabeth cut ties with the Clarks and make her brothers look like total fools was like watching a live-action revenge flick. It was epic.
Nicole felt a mix of envy and excitement. She knew Elizabeth was a badass divination master, so she was both stoked and a bit freaked out that Elizabeth might mess with the Spellscroll family's business.
What Nicole didn't know was that Darlene was scheming to mess up Matthew with some cursed gemstone ring. If she had known, she might've given him a heads-up. But knowing Darlene, shady moves were just her style.
Elizabeth could see Nicole was in a tough spot. She said, "I just wanna know why you gave Darlene those Generational Blessings. This is super important to me, so I need the full story." People like Darlene and Brenda couldn't be ignored.
Nicole thought for a sec, then said, "I'll tell you, but you gotta keep it on the down-low from the Spellscroll family." She knew if she didn't spill now, Elizabeth might accidentally wreck her plans.
Elizabeth nodded. "No worries, I got no love for the Spellscrolls, and honestly, I think their methods suck."
From what Elizabeth had dug up, Nicole's life was way rougher than hers.
Nicole had it bad with her adoptive parents, doing all the chores since she was a kid. She only got to stay in school thanks to a kindhearted teacher. Without those yearly scholarships, she would've dropped out in middle school.
While Nicole was getting the short end of the stick, Darlene had all the luck. It was like Elizabeth and Brenda; once those Generational Blessings were in play, it was a zero-sum game.
After Darlene spilled the beans about the real and fake daughters, the Spellscrolls took Nicole back. But instead of treating her well, they continued to mistreat her. They made her wait until everyone had finished eating before allowing her to sit at the table, all under the pretense of "teaching her proper table manners."
They didn't give Nicole any pocket money either. If she wanted cash, she had to work weekends. At the same high school as Darlene, she faced bullying and harassment. The Spellscrolls blamed her for it and punished her more if she didn't serve Darlene.
Without a DNA test, anyone would doubt if Nicole was really their daughter or some enemy's kid. Elizabeth's dislike for the Spellscrolls grew even stronger.
Seeing Elizabeth's disdain, Nicole finally opened up. "I hope Darlene takes over the Spellscroll Group and kicks the family out. Let them feel the regret and pain for all their dirty tricks over the years." Her eyes had a sharp, calculating look.
Elizabeth caught onto something. She asked, "Over the years? Did the Spellscroll couple know about the daughter switch all along?"
Nicole was floored, not expecting Elizabeth to be so sharp and quick on the uptake. Since Elizabeth had already pieced it together, there was no point in hiding it. Especially since the Spellscroll family had done such vile things, she had no desire to cover for them. She was planning to spill the beans eventually anyway.
She nodded. "Yeah, they knew all along. They were the ones who swapped Darlene and me."
Elizabeth's eyes widened. "They did it? Why?"
Nicole sighed, "After Darlene and I were born, some divination master said I was bad news and Darlene was their golden ticket. He claimed if Darlene stayed with the Spellscrolls, she'd bring them fortune and fame, while I needed to suffer so my bad vibes wouldn't mess up the family's Generational Blessings."
She paused, her voice turning icy. "So the swap was all planned out and agreed upon by my adoptive parents. The two families cooked it up together. And my adoptive parents got a yearly payout from the Spellscrolls just to make sure they kept me down."
Nicole had cried too much in the past; now she was all out of tears. Her whole vibe was one of deep sadness and despair.
She sneered, "I never thought my real parents would treat me like this for some so-called Generational Blessings. After I went back to the Spellscrolls, they didn't hesitate to hurt me themselves. I found out the ugly truth when I overheard them talking one day. When I tried to fight back, they punished me hard. So I stopped fighting and started feeding Darlene my Generational Blessings. I saw her ambitions and figured I'd let the Spellscrolls deal with the fallout of their own actions."
Elizabeth was stunned by her story. She hadn't expected the truth to be this twisted.
She sighed, "But if Darlene keeps sucking up your Generational Blessings, you'll just get more bad luck and a shorter life."
Nicole replied with a bitter laugh, "If I refuse, they'll just find another way to hurt me, and I can't escape. Every time I tried to run, they found me, no matter how careful I was. Each time they caught me, the punishments got worse. My only option now is revenge."
Elizabeth nodded. "I get it. You have every right to hate them." The Spellscrolls' cruelty—sacrificing their own child's well-being for a shot at a prosperous future—was heartless.
Elizabeth grabbed Nicole's arm, determination in her eyes. "If you had a chance to break free from the Spellscrolls, would you take it?"
Elizabeth felt a mix of anger and sympathy for Nicole and wanted to help her. It was clear that although Nicole was filled with hatred, it was only aimed at the Spellscroll family. She hadn't turned so dark as to want revenge on everyone.
Nicole still had a conscience. With the right help, she could get out.
But Nicole shook her head. She muttered, "No need. I just want to get revenge on them now. Let them feel what it's like to be abandoned." It seemed like the only thing keeping her going was revenge. She was willing to risk everything for it.
