Chapter 309 Really Good at It
At Aevum City's Soule Field.
Elizabeth had no clue Raymond's fam was glued to the TV, watching her every move. When Raymond brought substitute players over, she flashed a smile and said hey.
The two guys were stoked to meet Elizabeth. Up close, she was even more stunning than on TV—no filters needed, just pure natural beauty.
They introduced themselves: Dennis Lawson and Brandon Thomas.
Elizabeth grinned and asked, "You guys old pals?"
Dennis nodded. "Yeah, we go way back. A few years ago, we hit up Aevum City for a vacay, caught a Soule match, and got hooked. We learned the ropes at the polo field and now we come here every year. If a team wants us, cool. If not, we just chill and watch."
They were here for the love of the game, not just the competition.
Elizabeth nodded. "It's good to know each other; makes for better teamwork. We've got a team, so let's register and grab our gear."
The two nodded. "Cool, we'll count on you to lead us to victory."
Elizabeth figured Raymond had hyped her up. She just chuckled, "Alright, I'll lead you to victory."
They went to register and then to pick their gear. The Soule field provided the gear, but you had to choose it yourself. As long as the gear wasn't faulty, any safety issues during the match were on you. Everyone signed a safety waiver during registration.
Raymond sidled up to Elizabeth with a grin, "Elizabeth, can you help me pick out the right gear too?"
Elizabeth looked at him. "You don't know how to pick?"
Raymond chuckled, "Anything you pick is the best. I trust your judgment more."
Elizabeth couldn't help but laugh. She didn't refuse.
Raymond's eyes sparkled as he said, "I knew you were the best."
This made the Gonzalez family, who were watching the live stream, crack up.
One of Raymond's cousins laughed out loud. "Wow, I never thought Raymond could be so cute."
Another cousin said, "I remember Raymond started playing football before he was ten. He doesn't know how to pick gear? He's just messing with us."
Lily chimed in, "Didn't you hear him say that Elizabeth picks the best?"
Another cousin sighed, "That's love!"
He then laughed again, "Could the Raymond I know really talk like that?"
Everyone else sighed, "Never seen him like this before."
Lily chuckled, "You guys don't get it. Raymond's just being playful, which really brings out the protective side of a strong, cheerful girl like Elizabeth. I used to think Raymond would have the hardest time finding a girlfriend among all the cousins. Turns out, he's the real pro. And with that handsome face, what woman could resist?"
Elizabeth was tough with Eugene and the wicked brothers, kind but not overly sweet with acquaintances, but with Raymond, her affection was undeniably tender.
The cousins were stunned, saying, "Raymond can change like that? That's impressive." They couldn't pull it off themselves.
Lily looked at the still-single cousins and laughed. "That's right; you should all take notes from Raymond."
The cousins replied, "Alright, we'll make time to watch the live stream and learn from Raymond."
The elders were both surprised and amused; Raymond had really opened their eyes.
Elizabeth's crew quickly picked out their gear. After they registered, Brenda and Enrique walked in with a team.
Seeing Elizabeth and the others, the two didn't bother to say hi. Instead, they chatted and laughed with their teammates while picking gear.
Dennis and Brandon were surprised to see them join this team. After walking a bit, Elizabeth asked the two, "Do you know this team?"
Dennis replied, "Yeah, they were the champs of the last two Soule matches." He then added in a low voice, "This team is notoriously ruthless. Many teams that go up against them end up with injuries. They always make it look accidental, so they never get penalized. We faced them last year and got eliminated. Two of our teammates got hurt, and it felt intentional. But they never leave any evidence, so complaints never stick."
Elizabeth asked, "Do they change team members often?"
Dennis responded, "Yeah, they have four fixed members, and the other two are always temps. They use those two as bait to target opponents. In the last two matches, their teammates also got injured. I heard they keep 90% of the prize money and only give the other two 10%. If the temps don't agree, they get dealt with. So regular Soule players never join them."
"They always find newcomers. I'm not sure if they found Brenda and Enrique or if those two approached them," Dennis said.
