Chapter 73 That's All There Is to It
Elizabeth asked, "Did you fight with him?"
Rebecca shook her head. "Not really."
She looked relieved. "I finally realized I've been chasing him for years, and it’s pointless."
She shrugged. "So I gave up."
Elizabeth was surprised. "You really gave up this time? Can you let go?"
Rebecca forced a smile. "Yeah, I did. If you can give up on Eugene, I can give up on Hubert."
She added, "Your decision inspired me. Otherwise, I'd still be wasting my time on him."
Elizabeth agreed. "You're right. Why waste your youth on someone not worth it? I support you!"
Rebecca played with Elizabeth's fingertips, sighing. "Elizabeth, our situations are similar. You were lost by your family, and when found, they favored Brenda. I wasn't lost, but never loved by my family. We both liked jerks."
Her eyes reddened, but she didn't cry. "We seem both unlucky and miserable."
Elizabeth knew Rebecca was sad about letting go of Hubert.
Just like when she was betrayed by her family and Eugene, it was heart-wrenching.
She squeezed Rebecca's hand. "That was the past. From now on, things will get better. We don't need family or men."
She added, "We're closer than real sisters. And men, out with the old, in with the new."
Rebecca nodded. "Yes, from now on, we live for ourselves."
She asked, "I want to drink. Do we have any at home?"
Elizabeth shook her head. "No, but I can order some."
Rebecca snapped her fingers. "Do it!"
Elizabeth took out her phone and placed an order.
Forty minutes later, they sat on the carpet, eating barbecue and drinking beer.
Rebecca clinked glasses with Elizabeth. "This is the life. I was stupid to suffer abroad for a man."
Elizabeth laughed. "Better late than never."
Rebecca agreed. "Yes, waking up in time to enjoy life."
Just then, her phone rang.
Elizabeth saw the caller ID: "Amy."
Rebecca answered and put it on speaker. "Mrs. Baker, what's up?"
A cold voice replied. "Rebecca, you're outrageous. What's on your mind? Look at what you did today, hitting Eugene in public. Everyone saw it."
Amy was clearly angry.
Rebecca, eating her skewer, said nonchalantly, "Embarrassing? I thought I was cool."
Amy paused and ordered, "Come home immediately."
Rebecca rolled her eyes. "You tell me to come back, and I come back? That’s undignified."
Amy's voice rose. "Rebecca, you're too much!"
Rebecca continued, "Mrs. Baker, you only have authority with Percy and Eugene. You're nothing to me. So adjust your attitude. This tone doesn't work on me."
Amy didn't expect Rebecca to be so defiant.
Amy sneered, "Rebecca, it's because of your ill-mannered friends that you don't act like a lady from a wealthy family."
Elizabeth knew Amy was talking about her.
As expected, Amy continued, "You hit Eugene for Elizabeth's sake. You're crazy."
Amy added, "Come back immediately and stop hanging out with Elizabeth."
Rebecca sneered, "Mrs. Baker, are you mistaken? You came from an ordinary family and only became Mrs. Baker after marrying my father. Elizabeth, even though she was lost for over ten years, is still the true heiress of the Clark family. Her status is more noble than yours. Even if you're jealous of Elizabeth's status, you don't have to slander her."
Amy was furious, her voice louder and sharper. "Rebecca, you beast. You should leave the Baker family like Elizabeth did. You both have no manners."
Elizabeth saw Rebecca pointing to her mouth, asking if she could speak. Rebecca gestured that she could.
With a hint of sarcasm, Elizabeth fired back, "Well, Mrs. Baker, is gossiping and backstabbing the finest etiquette one needs to snag a wealthy partner?"
She had met Amy a few times, and Amy never liked her.
In a previous encounter with Amy before she returned to the Clark family, when she was introduced by Eugene to his mother, Amy had just given her a cold glance, looking down on her.
Frustrated with Amy's demeanor, she had mirrored her frostiness, choosing silence over confrontation.
The situation escalated when Amy, unable to contain her disapproval, urged Eugene to reconsider their relationship, a conversation inadvertently overheard by Rebecca. The tension lingered even after she returned to the Clark family, with Amy's animosity remaining steadfast.
Despite the amicable relationship Amy shared with Betty, her disdain for her was unwavering. However, Brenda seemed to bask in Amy's affection, highlighting the stark contrast in their interactions.
Elizabeth didn't need to inquire to piece together the puzzle. The pendants undoubtedly bore Amy's mark, who was trying to push Brenda towards Eugene, possibly harboring matrimonial aspirations for the duo.
On the other end, Amy was shocked to hear Elizabeth suddenly speak.
She was even more furious.
If Rebecca were in front of her, she would have strangled her.
Being mocked by Elizabeth, Amy couldn't maintain her composure.
She sneered, "Did I say anything wrong? What you said shows how ill-mannered you are. I'll talk to your mother about this."
Elizabeth deliberately laughed. "You should talk to your good friend Mrs. Clark. After all, my lack of manners is due to her absence."
Amy hadn't expected Elizabeth to say this and was stunned. "You!"
Then she said, "Rebecca, I give you one hour to come back, or don't ever return to the Baker family again."
Amy knew that when Elizabeth was with Eugene, she didn't respect her and was rude.
Now that Elizabeth and Eugene had fallen out, she would be even less respectful.
So she vented all her anger on Rebecca.
