Chapter 108 Good Things Are Coming
Gregory guessed what Abigail was thinking and laughed. He leaned in and whispered, "We're married, so I can read your mind."
Abigail didn't buy it. "Then why can't I read yours?"
Gregory took her hand and placed it on his heart, smiling. "Maybe it takes a heartfelt connection. That's why I can guess your thoughts."
Seeing Gregory's serious yet teasing look, Abigail felt both helpless and amused.
No one would believe the cold, resolute CEO Gregory acted like this in private.
If his fans saw this, they'd be shocked.
When Abigail finally smiled, Gregory's eyes softened. "So, what were you thinking?"
Abigail bit her lip. "This dress is too sexy. I've never worn something like this, so I'm nervous."
Gregory was surprised. He furrowed his brow, held her shoulders, and made her face him. "Do you know why I chose this dress?"
Abigail shook her head. "I don't know. Romance novels always write it this way."
She couldn't figure it out.
Usually, a possessive CEO would demand that his wife change out of sexy clothes or remove makeup.
In high school, Tricia had her read many romance novels with similar plots, so Abigail was familiar with this trope. But Gregory did the opposite, which puzzled her.
Upon hearing "romance novels", Gregory's forehead twitched. "Read fewer of those. What you wear is your choice. Not even I, as your husband, can interfere. I want you to show your beauty without reservations."
Only insecure men felt threatened by others looking at their wife.
Hearing this, Abigail smiled. "So that's why you chose this dress?"
Gregory nodded. "I chose it because it suits you, and I want you to live freely. You have the most powerful person in Aramore supporting you, so don't worry about others' opinions."
Abigail's eyes welled up with tears.
Her mom used to say similar things, calling her a little princess and hoping she'd be happy and carefree.
But after Michelle passed away, under Kayla and Jessica's influence, David couldn't stand her.
Whenever she wore clothes she liked, David would say they were inappropriate and make her change.
When she wore jewelry, David would complain she was being too flashy.
Over time, Abigail became self-conscious.
It had been a long time since anyone had told her she could live without being cautious or worrying about others' opinions.
She couldn't hold back and hugged Gregory. "Mr. White."
How could he be so good?
So good it felt like a dream, making her afraid to believe she could be so carefully protected.
Feeling her in his arms, Gregory gently stroked her hair.
He always knew Abigail faced the world with a hard shell, but inside, she was more fragile than anyone.
He wished Abigail could return to her childhood self—proud and mischievous—rather than suppressing her true nature to be obedient and sensible.
He was thrilled that Abigail felt comfortable enough to be her true self around him, showing she trusted him.
...
At Maple Leaf Manor Hotel, Elaine warmly greeted every guest at the birthday party with a friendly smile.
The birthday wishes left Elaine's vanity thoroughly satisfied.Olivia stood behind her, looking dignified and winning many admirers.
Some guests subtly inquired about Olivia's marriage prospects.
Although Olivia wasn't biologically related to the White family, everyone knew they had raised her for years. The White family had no daughters, so they chose Olivia.
She was an excellent choice—connecting with the White family would significantly benefit their families and companies.
Elaine's smile faltered momentarily but soon returned. She said, "It's a pity, but Olivia already has someone she likes."
The rejection was clear, and the conversation quickly shifted.
Olivia sneered inwardly.
They didn't even consider their sons' status and still thought she would marry them! She was destined to be Gregory's wife, a position of noble status, and would never like their sons.
Naturally, she kept these thoughts to herself.
This party was hosted by the White family, and any expression of disdain or disgust could tarnish their reputation. Thus, she maintained a proper smile throughout.
After more than an hour, while Elaine continued chatting happily, Olivia's attention began to wane.
She occasionally glanced at the door, hoping for Gregory's arrival.
Despite their last meeting ending badly, Olivia never gave up easily.
Once she decided on something, she saw it through, no matter the cost.
Lost in thought, she saw David's family walk in with smiles. "Elaine, happy birthday! It's been a long time!"
Elaine's face instantly fell. "Why are you here? Who invited you? Did I invite you?"
David smiled and handed her an invitation. "We wouldn't have come without an invitation."
Elaine examined the invitation and confirmed it was indeed one she had asked Andy to prepare, further darkening her expression. "Where did you get this? Did you steal it?"
Elaine had a very poor impression of David's family.
Previously, the Martin family barely counted as prestigious, so she could reluctantly be friendly. But David's daughters, Abigail and Jessica, had ruined Roman's reputation.
Now, whenever Roman was mentioned, it was always followed by "douchebag".
If it weren't for the occasion, Elaine would have had security throw David and his family out.
David's face darkened. Though the Martin family was declining, he hadn't been treated so rudely in a long time.
Just as he was about to get angry, Kayla tugged at his sleeve. "David, everyone here is of high status and power."
