Chapter 393 Recognizable Even in Ashes

Twenty years ago, when Caius was still the head of the Worthington family, he had met him at a certain banquet.

How could Michelle be with him?

David's mind was full of questions, but he had no one to ask. He turned to the internet and surprisingly found some clues about Caius.

Online rumors suggested Caius stepped down as head of the Worthington Group over twenty years ago for a woman. Five years ago, the year Michelle died, Caius announced his marriage. Few had seen his wife, but banquet photos sometimes featured Michelle. Even a glimpse of her back or profile stunned David. It was Michelle—he was certain.

David needed answers. Michelle was his wife; even in death, how could she be with another man? His health wouldn't let him travel to Aerilon. After much thought, he called Jessica, got no answer, and tried again that evening, finally connecting.

On the other end, Jessica's voice was filled with fatigue. "What do you want?"

She didn't even want to call him Dad. After divorcing Roman, Kayla revealed Jessica wasn't David's biological daughter. Her real father was a man from an affair, though even Kayla was unsure who he was.

How could she not be David's daughter? His affection was genuine; he always put her first and gave her everything she wanted.

Kayla knew she had feelings for David, so she advised her, "Jessica, this isn't your fault. It's all Mom's fault. Back then, David was afraid Michelle would find out about us, so he cut off contact with me for several months. In a fit of anger, I wanted to get back at him and had an affair with another man."

Seeing Kayla's red eyes, Jessica couldn't get angry. She hugged her mother. "Mom, don't say that. It's not your fault. Blame that bitch Michelle. If it weren't for her breaking you and Dad up, none of this would have happened."

Moved to tears by her daughter's understanding, Kayla felt relieved and told her not to visit David in the hospital anymore. "David is in a bad situation now. He's offended Abigail and Gregory and is under police surveillance. If he gets into trouble, it won't be good."

Though it felt heartless, Jessica complied, haunted by her ordeal at the police station, and stayed away for over a month.

David was lost in his thoughts and didn't notice the conflict and coldness in Jessica's tone. He eagerly said, "Jessica, why haven't you come to see me for so long? I miss you. When do you have time to visit me? I have something to tell you."

After hanging up, Jessica hesitated, unsure if she should go see David.

When Kayla found out, she immediately said, "Go, why not? David still has a lot of money. Maybe this time he's going to make a will. He doesn't have much time left anyway. That money is useless to him. It might as well go to us."

As she applied makeup, Kayla spoke. Exhausted from days spent with wealthy men, she used thick concealer to mask her fatigue before her date.

Hearing this, Jessica's eyes lit up. "Okay, I'll go right away."

When she arrived at the hospital, the strong smell of disinfectant hit her nose. Jessica suppressed her disgust and walked into the ward. "Dad."

The moment he saw her, David's eyes lit up. "Jessica, you finally came!"

"Why did you call me here? I'm busy."

David's smile froze, unable to believe it. "What did you say?"

Was this still his gentle, kind, and obedient Jessica?

Why was she so impatient with him?

Jessica realized her tone was off and quickly adjusted her expression, smiling. "Dad, I've just been busy with work lately. Don't mind it."

"Oh, I see." David breathed a sigh of relief. He knew Jessica couldn't be ungrateful.

"Jessica, I want you to help me investigate something in Aerilon. You'll help me, right?" Right now, the only person he could trust and rely on was Jessica.

"Aerilon? Did something happen?" Jessica looked at him with concern.

Seeing her worried eyes, David felt warm inside. Jessica still cared about him. This daughter wasn't spoiled for nothing.

He told her everything about his suspicion that Michelle was still alive and angrily said, "That bitch Michelle, if the woman by Caius's side is really her, she's been fooling me for a long time!"

Jessica's eyes widened in shock. "Michelle is still alive? How is that possible!"

If Michelle were alive, why hide? Had she abandoned Abigail? Caius, the former Worthington head, fueled her envy. If he backed Michelle for revenge, could they escape?

Jessica's mind was in turmoil, her hands nervously clenched into fists. "Dad, don't worry. I'll definitely help you investigate, but there's a problem."

"What is it? What's the problem?"

"I don't have any money, and Aerilon is expensive. I can't afford a private detective."

David pondered for a moment and said, "I have an account at Starlight Cove Bank with some money in it. I'll give you the account number and password. As long as you get the job done, you can use the money however you want."

"Thank you. I'll find out the truth." With the account number and password, Jessica didn't want to stay any longer and left with a random excuse.

Why hadn't she noticed before that David was so easy to fool?

She had her eye on a bag recently. Before going to Aerilon, she had to treat herself.

Meanwhile, Abigail called Caius, who answered with a magnetic voice. "What's up? Didn't we just talk last night?"

He knew his daughter well. Although she was willing to get along with him for Michelle's sake, she still held a lot of resentment and wouldn't contact him voluntarily.

Abigail bit her lip and said, "David knows Mom is alive."
