Chapter 285 The Patient Urgently Needs Surgery
After hanging up the phone, Abigail immediately had someone investigate which hospital David was taken to.
However, before she could start the investigation, the hospital called her.
"Is this Ms. Martin? This is Aramore City First Hospital. Mr. David had a heart attack and is undergoing emergency treatment. We need the patient's family present."
Abigail took a deep breath, not expecting the situation to be so critical.
She said, "Okay, I'll be right there."
After hanging up the phone, Abigail didn't waste any time. She grabbed her car keys and headed out.
Half an hour later, Abigail arrived at the hospital and ran toward the emergency building.
Although she resented David, she never intended to see him dead.
It wasn't because she still had feelings for him, but because she didn't want to get involved in a murder case.
David could die, but not now.
He still had many unresolved issues, so Abigail couldn't let him die just like that.
By the time she arrived outside the operating room, Abigail was already out of breath, but she didn't care about anything else at the moment. She urgently asked the doctor, "Doctor, I'm David's family. How is the patient?"
The doctor glanced at her, his expression serious. "The situation is a bit dangerous. It's acute myocardial infarction. We've already called the best specialist. He needs immediate surgery."
David's condition was worse than Abigail had imagined.
Abigail quickly signed the critical condition notice, urging the hospital to arrange the surgery as soon as possible.
She didn't leave immediately but stayed quietly in the hospital corridor, waiting.
The surgery process was long, and the surrounding air seemed to be stagnant.
Abigail leaned against the wall, her eyes slightly closed, her mind constantly flashing back to the times when the three of them were together as a family.
Although all that love was fake, young Abigail didn't understand that. She only knew that back then, David was willing to spend time with her and often brought her gifts.
Later, everything started to change.
At this moment, a hurried sound of footsteps approached, and Abigail slowly opened her eyes to see Gregory standing in front of her.
Gregory stopped in front of Abigail, his deep eyes filled with concern. "Abigail, are you okay?"
"I'm fine." Abigail smiled at him, her expression surprisingly calm. "It's just that everything happened so suddenly."
Gregory felt a pang of heartache. He extended his long arm and pulled Abigail into his embrace. "I've already had the media block the news. David's critical condition won't be reported for now. No matter what happens, I'll be with you."
Abigail rested her cheek against Gregory's chest and sighed softly. "Do you think this is David's karma?"
"Probably," Gregory said.
What David did, even dying a hundred times wouldn't be enough to make up for it.
But in a way, this was good. Death would be a relief for him. Only through this kind of suffering, being half-dead and tormented, could he truly learn a lesson.
More than two hours later, the door of the operating room finally opened, and the doctor came out, asking, "Who is the patient's family?"
Abigail immediately walked over. "I am. How is he?"
The doctor took off his mask, his expression serious. "The surgery went well, but the situation is still not optimistic. The patient needs to rest and must not get agitated. He also needs to be observed in the hospital for a while."
Abigail thanked the doctor and followed the nurse as they transferred David to a ward.
When she entered the ward, David was still unconscious. He was on an IV, looking weak and haggard, with no color on his face.
Abigail stood by the bedside, her eyes downcast, lost in thought.
Gregory reached out and pulled her into his arms, comforting her in a low voice. "Don't overthink it. It's not your fault that he's like this."
Abigail snapped out of her thoughts and shook her head lightly. "I'm not blaming myself. I'm just wondering why my mom fell in love with David."
David, aside from his good looks, had almost no redeeming qualities.
He was incompetent, had a terrible personality, was image-conscious, and showed no tenderness toward Mechelle.
She couldn't understand what was so good about David that Mechelle would be so attached to him.
Gregory chuckled. "Feelings are inherently irrational. Just like how I like you, there's never been a reason. I just like you."
Abigail was surprised by his sincere confession in such a situation, and her cheeks suddenly flushed. "What are you talking about? Be serious."
Gregory's eyes twinkled with amusement. He leaned in closer to Abigail, his lips almost touching hers. "I'm telling the truth. Every word is sincere. I like you and will never let you down."
Looking into Gregory's deep eyes, Abigail's heart couldn't help but beat faster.
She stared blankly at Gregory in front of her. As he was about to kiss her, she slowly closed her eyes.
Just as their lips were about to touch, a sudden violent cough came from the hospital bed.
David glared angrily at Gregory and Abigail, who were showing affection in front of his bed, his face red with rage.
"Abigail, you shameless woman! This is a hospital!" David shouted.
Abigail raised an eyebrow and sneered. "So what? Your hospital bills and surgery fees were all paid by me. This ward was also paid for by me."
"Are you planning to abandon me?" David struggled to sit up in bed but found himself too weak. Any slight movement caused a sharp pain in his chest.
Abigail tilted her head, a faint smile on her lips, but her words made David's heart sink. "Didn't you say before that I'm an illegitimate child and not your biological daughter? If you have the guts, go find Jessica to pay your bills."
Jessica was currently in police custody.
David was furious, pointing a trembling finger at Abigail. "I advise you to release Jessica immediately, or don't blame me for being rude!"
He was sick, and his words lacked any real force.
Abigail crossed her arms and looked at him mockingly. "Are you done? Why should I listen to you? But don't worry, the police are fair and just. Attempted murder only gets a three to five-year sentence. Once she turns over a new leaf, she'll naturally be released."
These words completely ignited the anger in David's heart. He glared at Abigail with hatred and fury in his eyes. "Abigail, what will it take for you to agree? Whatever conditions you have, I'll agree to them!"
Abigail smirked and asked, "I thought you would doubt whether Jessica was your biological child after seeing those news reports. I didn't expect you to have such deep feelings for her."
David choked up, struggling to find his voice.
How could he not have doubts?
But he had already completely offended Abigail and Gregory.
And with Susan's baby's safety still uncertain, the only person he could rely on now was Jessica.
Abigail took a deep breath and sighed. "David, sometimes I don't know whether to call you smart or stupid."
Jessica was spoiled from a young age, lacking brains and strategy, selfish, and always putting herself first.
Even if Jessica were released, she might not care about David's life or death.
Unfortunately, those involved often feel confused. David just couldn't grasp this concept, or rather, he was unwilling to consider the worst-case scenario and still held out hope for Jessica.
